International Call for Projects 2020
Call for FabLabs International Projects –2020
Context
In 2014, the Orange Foundation launched major digital education programs to provide new
opportunities to young people in need (without diploma and job) and vulnerable women,
based mainly on digital technology.
As soon as the Fablab’s movement emerged, we used the enthusiasm behind the approach
to help bring digital technology to young unemployed people through our Solidarity FabLab
program. FabLabs are a place of innovation, where individuals learn and understand digital
technology in an original and collaborative way.
It is a wonderful opportunity for them to develop digital skills and prepare themselves for
the professions of the future. We know that the way people learn in FabLabs, which is based
on doing and sharing, is a powerful driver to increase young people's confidence and self-
esteem.
Building on these aspects, we want to draw in young people and raise their awareness - and
for the highly motivated among them, offer digital fabrication training that capitalizes on
their skills, totally free of charge for them.
So far, the Orange Foundation has supported 109 Solidarity FabLabs in France and
worldwide in 17 countries: Spain, France, Poland, Tunisia, Morocco, Mali, Democratic
Republic of Congo, Guinee Conakry, Mayotte, Madagascar, Senegal, Egypt, Jordan,
Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Belgium and Slovakia.
The Orange Foundation is launching a sixth international call for Solidarity Fablab projects,
opened in countries where the Orange Group is involved (outside of France).
Call for FabLabs International Projects –2020
Framework
Organizations are invited to propose one or more Solidarity Fablab projects (creation or development) as part of the Orange Foundation's call for projects (outside of France). Call for projects schedule:
- Start : 20 January 2020 - End : 20 March 2020 - Selection committee meeting: May 2020
Total budget: €320,000 It is important for the project to describe:
- the choice of the fablab to lead the action with young people in integration, the associative partners of the project accompanying young people in integration who will be able to make young people come to this place
- for new FabLabs, the economic and social background of the project and the relevance within the local context
- in the case of a development of training courses, the content, the duration, the educational objectives of these courses (proposal in Appendix 2)
The Orange Foundation is particularly attentive to the solidarity actions that FabLab will set up for the benefit of young people in precarious situations and unemployed and to the implementation of specific educational programs, totally free of charge for them and allowing them to develop new skills. The project's supporting structure must have legitimacy in the digital world and ideally be associated with other youth integration associations. It must also have the status of association or NGO. It can also have a partnership with a company that allows young people to be involved in the professional world (either through the project or through training ...). The project’s budget required must be realistic and should not include general operating costs or the wages of its permanent staff. For new FabLabs, the Orange Foundation can contribute to financing the equipment and helping the FabLab launch its activity. As part of a training program, only the expenses directly related to the training will be covered (the development of the training program, the accompaniment of young people during the training, the purchase of equipment for the realization of training...). The key criteria: - The relevance of the project and the involvement of other partners - A project for young people in integration (socially, professionally) - The implementation capacity and a realistic budget - The durability of the project

Appendix 3 - Proposed course to inspire and help you to build your course according to your project and context. Each course is modular and contains modules called "common core" (they are noted in bold) and other optional or optional modules (in italics). For each module, an indicative time is noted as well as the pre-requisites necessary to ensure a good articulation between the modules. Colour codes are used for the level of in-depth study of each of the technical modules (green : discovery / yellow : initiation / red : improvement).
a. 1 course for accompanying persons (1/2 to 1 day) : In order that the accompanying person in the relay structures are well aware of the issues, can target future beneficiaries and potentially provide support during the different courses, a specific course is designed for them.

ii. Initiation course (5-6 half-days) :
This initiation course aims to familiarize you with easily accessible CAD tools and to get you started in a project approach. The course is divided into modules that allow you to acquire basic skills in vector drawing and to use rapid prototyping tools (mainly laser and vinyl cutters) as well as to discover 3D printing and to have a basic knowledge of electronics. The most important part is the project module in which the beneficiaries must find a solution to a given problem and push their appropriation of the tools they have discovered during the previous modules. Documentation is also a key factor in promoting the project and the skills acquired.

iii. Improvement course (40h - 80h) :
This course is the most modular, the project part is crucial and must represent at least 50% of the total time of the course. The technical platform of the Fab Lab concerned will have a very strong influence on the tools to be used. The techniques most frequently used in Fablab are described here, but you can add modules with other tools present in the Fab Lab. During this course, there are two main themes: the project and the documentation.
Documentation is a key element of this process because it makes it possible to leave a track
of the beneficiaries' achievements, to know how to tell the story and to be able to evaluate
the skills acquired. In this way, beneficiaries will be able to enhance the value of this in the
rest of their professional integration process.

iv. Individualized course (full-time over a defined long period):
This course can be based on the Improvement course for its construction but must above all integrate the beneficiary into the functioning of the FabLab.
Call for FabLabs International Projects –2020
One of the objectives of this course is to ensure that the beneficiary can use it as work experience or training. It must be fully integrated into the beneficiary's professional integration course.
