SODIUM PYRITHIONE
KUMAR ORGANIC PRODUCTS LIMITED
04/13/23 2R.Muralidharan
Sodium Pyrithione is an effective and high active broad-spectrum antimicrobial preservative that acts against moulds, yeasts, bacteria and algae.
Generally by conventional methods, fungi (yeast and mold) are not easily detected as the filamentous mycelial forms of mold tend to accumulate in machine crevices, in piping, on sump walls, gear boxes and other solid surfaces. Attempts to completely eliminate bacteria using bactericides alone result in conditions that influence the growth of fungi. Thus heavy fungal contamination may require both mechanical and chemical treatment. Procedures like dumping, cleaning and recharging fluids are expensive.

In today's regulatory climate, disposal of used fluid can be a costly affair. Hence, it is vital to include a fungicide, as well as a bactericide, to ensure longevity to the system life and savings on replacement, cleaning, and disposal costs.

Stability and Compatibility
Chemical stability :
Sodium Pyrithione is stable under normal environmental conditions if stored in closed, dark
containers. Alkalinity of metal working fluids is not affected by the addition of Sodium
pyrithione.
Compatibility:
Compatible with most raw materials used in technical applications.

Antimicrobial ActivityTo control fungi very small doses of Sodium Pyrithione is required.
Studies indicate that Sodium Pyrithione can effectively control bacteria in semisynthetic and synthetic metalworking fluids even at a minimum dose of 1000 ppm.
Different use and contamination conditions require different levels of Sodium Pyrithione. Although it is compatible with most metalworking fluids, both physical and chemical compatibility testing is usually recommended.

Applications
1. Inhibits the growth of Bacteria and Fungi in Cutting, Metalworking, Cooling and Lubricating Fluid Concentrates
The amount required in the concentrate will depend on the end use dilution. For example: If the desired level of Sodium Pyrithione is 1,250 ppm and the end use dilution of the fluid is 5%, then a 2.5% concentration of Sodium Pyrithione is required in the concentrate (1,250 ppm/0.5=25,000 ppm or 2.5%).

Applications
2. Controls bacterial growth in latex emulsions for a longer period
• In order to inhibit bacterial growth in latex emulsions for up to 1 year, usually a dosage of 1,000 ppm of Sodium Pyrithione (1 part of Sodium Pyrithione per 1,000 parts of emulsion) is recommended. Sodium Pyrithione may be added at any time during the formulation procedure by pouring from the container.
3. Inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi in aqueous based inks and pigment slurries
4. For the Dry Film Preservation of Natural, and Synthetic Adhesives, Latexes, Urethane Foams, Caulks, Patching Compounds, Sealants, Architectural Paints, Industrial Paints and Coatings (Including Wood Coatings)
