the ‘breadcrumb’ trail

You publish content on

your blog or website

You share it on Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook

Your team shares it, or comments,

likes or reposts

It’s seen by one of their network and

shared by them

Their friends, contacts and connections

see it.

Direction of internet travel

There are rewards!

Golden rules for social media* 1. Always be polite

2. Don’t expect random strangers to talk to you

3. Don’t tell me the same thing twice

4. Don’t talk in gibberish

5. Do be interesting

*rules also apply to real life...

social media

how not to do it...

Don’t post things to the wrong profile...

No-one believes you were ‘hacked’…

Who has got your password?

Just give him a new guitar already!

How to react to problems

Apologise! You are human!

“In the meantime we found so many of you to be sympathetic and understanding. While we’re a 130 year old humanitarian organization, we’re also made of up human beings. Thanks for not only getting that but for turning our faux pas into something good.”

Create a happy ending...

Tell people how you are making things better!

How to avoid those problems in the first place...

How to do it… • Prepare!

• Have a policy

• Know who has access

• Training

• More training!

• What to do if they have any concerns about content posted by themselves or about themselves by another person

• Clear guidance on escalation of action from employer
