Have you wondered about some of these questions? What are the new features of the Facebook timeline that I can utilize? What should I post on our Facebook Fanpage? What should I post on Twitter? Where can I find content to post on Twitter and Facebook? What are Twitter lists and how can they help me? What is Hootsuite and what's so great about it? How often should I post? Who is in charge of posting? How do I track analytics? I'll be going over all of these questions and listing out Twitter don'ts by using one example tweet from each AIESEC chapter across Canada as an example!

And  now...

Here is what NOT to do on Twitter and EVERY LC is getting called out ;)

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Don’t have any misspellings or grammatical mistakes.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Always punctuate. Add a period to the end of your tweet.

Don’t be too random.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Don’t add a space before punctuation.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Take out unnecessary words and be concise as possible.

“Have any summer plans yet? We have 10 AIESEC positions to each English in Turkey and China starting in July!”

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Don’t start off your tweet with an @mention. Twitter could read this tweet as a conversation, in which case, only the people who follow both you and the @mention user will see the tweet.

If I don’t follow @AIESEC, then the following tweet may not show up on my news feed.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

You don’t need to include the original post when replying. You probably want to do this to give readers more context, but it actually gives them less context.

If you’re having a back and forth conversation, Twitter automatically threads the posts so users can see the entire conversation. If you break the thread with a “RT with Comment” and it’s doesn’t start with an @mention anymore, then users cannot read previous messages when they click to expand the post.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Don’t tweet links without adding an intriguing comment. You need to give people a reason to click.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Don’t promote yourself too much.

Don’t use overly obvious add-on such as, “new post”, “read our blog post”, etc. because it sounds like you’re just trying to spam them. People will realize on their own that it’s from your blog. If you include it, it sounds too promotional.

Instead, sound like you’re offering valuable information, that there’s something interesting in the article that they can benefit from, you need a hook.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Be professional. The content you’re talking about and the words you use need to be professional, appropriate and brand aligned. ANYONE could be reading your tweets and we want externals to receive a good impression of us.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Don’t tweet like it’s your personal account. Although I wouldn’t recommend tweeting things that don’t add value to your readers from your personal account either.

Don’t @mention yourself.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

If you’re going to mention another person or organization, use their username so they’ll be notified.

Ex. @KanataChamber

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Don’t have tweets that are too long and get cut off. Keep an eye on your word count.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Don’t RT everything. Your feed will be boring is all you do is RT without adding your own intriguing comment or question.

But if you’re adding a comment or question, make sure it’s one that non-AIESECers want to answer.

Although this tweet is trying to tie AIESEC to the article, which is a good thing, the question doesn’t correlate with the article. It may be misleading for people who want the answer and click the link to find nothing about AIESEC’s brand promise in the link.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

What you RT can seem like an endorsement, so be careful of supporting non-AIESEC related things.

Will people expect AIESEC internships in the link? Will people think AIESEC is working with teenwork.ca and have something to do with the webinar?

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Don’t overuse exclamation marks

“Only a few more weeks until Diana, our intern from Mexico arrives for her internship with the Namco Group!”

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Don’t overuse capital letters.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Don’t use acronyms.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Don’t talk about things other people wouldn’t understand.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Don’t post things out of context.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Words that should be capitalized need to be capitalized.

Make sure your tweets are sending key messages that support your social media goals.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Don’t overload on hashtags and @mentions. Makes it harder to read.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Have variety in your content. Don’t do the same thing every day. And if you’re doing an on-going type of post, at least re-word it so it adds a little variety and sounds different every time.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Keep messages brand aligned with key messages that support your social media goals.

Ask yourself, what key message is your post delivering? Perhaps you want to show support to the organization that you’re RTing, but why would you followers want to read that?

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Use link shorteners to track link clicks.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Keep your social media accounts active.

Don’t tweet only during conferences.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Don’t set up auto-tweets. Write your own in a way that sounds interesting to users.

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

Tie your tweets into current events, but don’t force it.

“Wish you were in Germany watching the game live? Make sure you're there next time; AIESEC internships take you across the globe!”

Tuesday, 19 June, 12

There shouldn’t be any accidental tweets.

Make sure your profile picture fits the square.
