The SPD was formed in 1875 during the merge of the General German Workers’ Union and the Social Democratic workers party.
In 1890, they changed their name to the Social Democratic Party.
From 1878 to 1890, the party was officially outlawed.
The party began to have growing support and by 1912 it was the largest party in Reichstag (Imperial Diet).
Peer Steinbrück is the only chancellor that has come from this party.
