People Powered Recovery Social Action and Complex Needs

Findings from a call for evidence 22nd January 2018

#PeoplePoweredRecovery @APPGComplexNeed

A call for evidence

• Call for evidence: 1. How can social action improve the lives of people with

complex needs? 2. What are the challenges and barriers? 3. What economic evaluation evidence exists? 4. What are the critical enablers to grow social action in this

area? • Social action: Practical action in the service of others

– Peer support – Mutual aid – Employing people with lived experience

Benefits

1. Recovery 2. Improved employment prospects 3. Reducing stigma 4. Services that better meet people’s needs 5. Better use of resources

• Confidence and self-worth • Having a voice • Routine and structure • Living proof that change is possible • Counter to loneliness • Motivation and responsibility

Recovery

• Developing skills in a supportive environment • Paid roles enable people to take the next step

in a supportive environment and recognise unique contribution

• Progress towards the labour market but social action is also an end in itself

Employment

Stigma

• Peer led approaches - everyone’s been through it

• Valuing people’s insight • Breaking down barriers between staff and

clients

Better services

• Improved take-up and drop out rates • Alternative sources of support • Improved working practices

Cost effectiveness

• Quantifiable evidence of impact on health and wellbeing

• Better use of resources: – Freeing up professionals time – Bridging gaps between services

BUT • An ‘evidence trap’ of under-investment in

research into person and community centered approaches is leading to an immature evidence base that is in turn holding back implementation NESTA

Challenges

• Often reliant on key individuals • Take time to set up – short term funding • Additional costs of employing people with

lived experience • Prejudice • Risk of relapse / becoming unwell • A system wide focus on ‘hard outcomes’

Growing social action

• Leadership • Developing a stronger evidence base • Commissioning – social action embedded

within service specifications • Better use of the Social Value Act

"Our mission is to be an organisation of excellence with an ever changing and diverse range of activities and services that promote psychological and physical wellbeing, stimulate recovery and lead to social inclusion within mainstream society’’

‘Rochdale borough is the 25th most deprived borough in England, with significantly ageing and young communities which are ethnically diverse. Many of the characteristics of life within the borough have negative implications for health and this puts the promotion of better health and the reduction of health inequalities at the heart of all we do.’ Rochdale, Heywood, Middleton CCG

World Health Organisation 2014

YOU KNOW HE HAD HELP!

We follow no specific model of addiction or

recovery. We believe all are

equally valid.

WHEN WE TALK TO GOD WE ARE PRAYING.

WHEN HE TALKS TO US

WE ARE SCHIZOPHRENIC.

We have only ever employed our service managers from within our volunteer team.

50% of them have never worked before.

All are over 40 years old.

IT TAKES CONSIDERABLE

KNOWLEDGE TO RECOGNISE THE

EXTENT OF YOUR OWN IGNORANCE.

2014 Build on Belief Impact Evaluation (154 Service Users Interviewed)
