FIVE INTERLINKED PROJECTS
• From an actor-oriented approach to customer-oriented
- Enabling activity
- Active participation
- Successful forms of activity
- Development of production and interest in making investments
• A new way of thinking about development
- from a food chain into developing a food system

1. Implementation model: an extended development network, which has generated ideas for, implemented and managed centrally and through effective delegation over 40 thematic projects related to the dairy sector during 1997–2013. Activities began under the brand Maito-Savo (Dairy Savo), now each member of the network has its own brand
2. Innovations include extensive delegation, a cost-effective, unidirectional method of implementation that produces results, the one stop shop principle and minimising overlap in development and project work

METKA: Profitable Energy from the Forest
Core of the project • Research and development project
– the goal is increased profitability and better quality in the supply chain for forest energy
– the development of the forest energy supply chain will benefit directly from the research, through e.g. correct equipment choices and logistics control
• It is necessary to get wood chip fuel to user locations at a competitive price. The forest energy supply chain must also be profitable for all parties.
• The large forest management associations Kanta-Häme and Päijät-Häme, TTS (Työtehoseura), and the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) are all involved in the cooperation project as research institutes
• The results will be immediately put into use in the forest energy supply chain
The project created an operational model for forest energy based on the research results

The development project of the food chain
of Southwest Finland (VARRU) • The project is implemented by the Functional Foods Forum, the Finland Futures Research
Centre, and the Brahea Centre for Training and Development, which are units of the University of Turku.
• Project period 2011–2014 (extension granted)
• Funding by the ELY Centre for Southwest Finland, Rural Development Programme for Mainland Finland 2007–2013
• Target group: food chain actors from the field to the table and back
• Goals and innovations: - Developing a cooperation network
responding to the challenges of today by strengthening networks
- Developing the food chain in Southwest Finland and new opportunities
Implementing the future process
Including the forecasting of future as a part of business activities
- Increasing the strategic role of the food sector
Effectiveness of the food chain in the language of the decision-makers
(€/GDP/employment)
Making the food chain seen and heard by the consumers

1. Poor quality of surface water in agricultural areas was a
challenge; a pilot area was selected in the municipality of
Urjala.
2. Drainage basin -specific, farm-oriented design: a complete
information package on cultivation and the environment
shown on maps is tailored to the farmer by taking advantage
of e.g. GIS data. Financial and environmentally sustainable
solutions for developing cultivation and managing the
agricultural environment are found through farm-specific
guidance. The goal is to find practical solutions and actions
through cooperation between experts from different fields.
Public events are also organised in participatory planning.

The Responsible Pork Production project
is a development project implemented in
Varsinais-Suomi and Satakunta.
The areas' pork producers form the target
group for this project.
The project is divided into entities, the goals
of which are to improve feeding, spend fixed
costs more efficiently and improve
documentation as well as the sections of
production responsibility.
The project has utilized its own experts, HK
Agri's experts, MTT's researchers as well as
other expert services.
The website was created in order for the
-producer to achieve an competitive cost level
-pig to receive good care
-consumer to receive high-quality products
It will bring the highest level of success if all
stakeholders in the pork industry have a common
vision on the best practices of production.
The target groups and ideas of the project
We hope that the manual is read and used by:
pork producers
workforce employed by piggeries
veterinarians
the meat production industry
the feed industry and other input producers
and input marketers
agricultural experts
banks and financiers
educational institutes
agricultural lobbyists
other people interested in production
http://www.vastuullinensikatalous.fi/en/project
On the website, you will find a handbook that
describes the best practices of pork production
in terms of feeding, care, construction and
ventilation. Russian and English translations
have been created for feeding and care. Their
aim is to describe the best Finnish practices also
to foreign piggery employees.

Rural Innovation Camps
Summary
Main Activities
Innovation Camps are a tool to encourage the development of new ideas,
products and services and also different ways of working in rural areas. Finnish
NSU has arranged both national and regional camps. They have brought
together specialists and entrepreneurs to develop innovative solutions to the
threats and opportunities apparent in Finnish rural areas. Over three days and
two nights the ideas are developed in to new products, services and methods.
Finnish NSU organized with its partners a
national Innovation Camp in 2012. An open
call for rural innovation ideas was
launched. 47 different ideas were identified
and 8 of these were developed further in
the Camp. In 2013 the Innovation Cams
were taken to regional level. Through open
call 5 areas were selected where regional
camps are organized.
Key Success
A new model for developing innovation was
launched and it has been disseminated at a
regional level. New actors took part in the process -
even urban actors were interested in participating.
We have built new innovations and ways of doing
things and promoted the potential of rural areas for
new growth.
Innovation camps
Innovation camps
Conclusion
Innovation Camps are an excellent tool to develop the rural ‘innovation environment’ in
order to increase and improve co-operation between experts and develop and share a
new method of working. It works both on national and regional level. Innovation
Camps showcase the strengths of the countryside, develop new rural innovations in
product development and service provision and raise awareness of the opportunities
provided by the RDP's.
Innovation Camps can also be used as tool to build and develop EIPs, European
Innovation Parnerships.
Innovation Camps:
very practical but intensive way to develop new ideas in to innovations
build the local "innovation environment": can change the processes
good tool to attract new actors in rural development
the initial idea was received from Sweden - benchmarking works in ENRD
good way to receive publicity for the strengths of rural areas and the RDP
can be used as a tool in the EIP-processes
