Theseelectronic rating plates allow all of the drive componentsto be automatically identified through the DRIVE-CLiQconnection. This means that data does not have to bemanually entered while commissioning the system, orwhen replacing components – commissioning becomeseven more reliable! For instance, parameters of theelectrical equivalent circuit diagram and the characteris-tic values of the integrated motor encoder are saved inthe electronic motor rating plates. The modular drive configuration for multi-axis applications
consists of:

Flexibility and scalability through modular designDC/AC drive units distinguish themselves due to their mod-ular design. The complete drive intelligence is provided inthe Control Units (CU), which handle all of the control func-tions in the drive group. Further, they execute all additionaldrive functions – e. g. logically interlocking drive-related I/Os,positioning functions, etc. – and have either PROFIBUS DP or PROFINET as central interface to couple to higher-levelautomation systems. SIMOTION D or SINUMERIK 840D sl as special control units can be used for motion control andNC applications.
Line Modules feed the energy centrally into the DC link. LineModules with regulated infeed/regenerative feedback canoptionally ensure a constant DC link voltage and a highdegree of compatibility with the line supply.
Motor Modules supply motors with power from the DC link.Double-axis modules allow an especially compact design tobe achieved. Drive-related inputs/outputs can be expandedin a scalable fashion using terminal modules.
Flexible cooling solutionsSINAMICS S120 chassis drive units are available both in air-cooled as well as liquid-cooled versions. The liquid-cooledversion is ideal for dusty, salt-laden or aggressive ambientair and represents a cost-saving alternative with low oper-ating costs. It allows hermetically sealed cabinet solutionsto be implemented with a footprint that is up to 60 %smaller. Drive units with coldplate cooling allow heat to bedissipated through the rear of the units to the mounting sur-face. Double-axis modules in the Booksize version are espe-cially suitable for achieving compact drive arrangements.
Digital DRIVE-CLiQ interface:lower wiring costsSeamless component communications are a pre-requisite for a modular, state-of-the-art drive sys-tem architecture. As the standard digital interfacebetween all of the SINAMICS S120 drive com-ponents, the simple, plug-in DRIVE-CLiQ cablereduces the time required.

SINAMICS S120 AC Drives:the solution for single-axis applications
For SINAMICS S120 AC Drives, the infeed and motorpower supplies are combined in just one unit – the so-called Power Module. For single-axis applications, a special Control Unit (CU 310) mounted on the PowerModule handles the drive control. For multi-axis applica-tion, this is handled using a Control Unit (e. g. CU 320),coupled through DRIVE-CLiQ. In this case, instead ofthe Control Unit, a CU adapter is mounted on thePower Modules. SINAMICS S120 AC drives are suitablefor single-axis applications in all industry sectors – forinstance, traversing drives, centrifuges, elevators andextruders as well as mixers and kneaders. For applica-tions, where the drive axes are separated from oneanother over a considerable distance, SINAMICS S120AC Drives are the ideal solution. The same is true formodular machine concepts, which are being increas-ingly implemented in the packaging and woodworkingindustries.

Connection to the control: CU 310 Control UnitAC Drives have a CU 310 Control Unit to link themto the higher-level control. They offer a functionalscope extending from a basic speed controllerthrough extensive positioning functions.
Either CU 310 DP with a PROFIBUS DP connectionor CU 310 PN with an integrated PROFINET portcan be selected. Drive-related inputs/outputs canbe simply connected to the CU using BICO technol-ogy. This means that there is the highest possibledecoupling between the drive and the higher-levelcontrol.

Safety Integrated – functions to simply implementsafety conceptsSINAMICS S120 drive systems have extensive safetyfunctions. They allow innovative safety concepts to besimply realized in conformance with the appropriatestandards. “Safe Torque Off”, “Safe Stop 1” and “SafeBrake Control” are included on board as basic safetyfunctions. When selected, e. g. in a dangerous situation,all three functions disconnect the energy feed to themotor in a safety-relevant fashion.
The extended safety functions ”Safe Operating Stop“, ”Safe Stop 2“, ”Safety-LimitedSpeed“ and ”Safe Speed Monitor“ permit the drive to bereliably monitored in operation or when exceptional situations temporarily occur – such as when equippingmachines or when service work is being carried out. Theclosed-loop position control normally remains active.This means that after the exceptional situation has beenexited, the drive axis can immediately resume correctoperation. It is possible to carry out service and mainte-nance work in a user-friendly fashion and safely – whichsignificantly reduces machine and plant downtimes. Thesafety functions are either controlled via safety input ter-minals at the TM54F Terminal Module – or when thedrive is integrated into a complete automation environ-ment – via PROFIBUS with PROFIsafe.
EPos – positioning functions integrated in the driveUsing the integrated EPos positioning functions, formany positioning applications, an additional, higher-level positioning control can be eliminated. This inte-grated positioning functionality is also extremely flexi-ble. It functions for high-speed servo controls just thesame as for simpler applications with vector controlledinduction motors. Up to 64 absolute target positions ortravel paths as well as the travel velocities can be per-manently saved in the drive when it is commissioned.
Further, these parameters can be transferred from ahigher-level PLC when they are required. It is even pos-sible to change target positions and velocities on the flywhile positioning.
Lower costs and higher availability The safety functions integrated in SINAMICS S120 offer users
clear advantages: As they are integrated, they reduce the space
required and also the wiring time and costs. The availability is
increased as a result of optimized process operations, simple
machine structures as well as machine operator concepts in line
with those required in practice. SINAMICS safety solutions are
certified in conformance with EN 954-1 Cat. 3, IEC 61508 SIL2.

SINAMICS S120 can do more – beyond just the classic drive control – as

• DCC – Drive Control Chart to implement deliberate drive-related

DCC Drive Control Charts: to optimally adapt to thedrive taskUsing Drive Control Charts, the SINAMICS S120 drive sys-tem can do more than just handle the classic drive con-trol – beyond this, DCC permits drive-related open-loopand closed-loop control tasks to be shifted into the drive.This means that the drive system can be flexibly andoptimally adapted to a whole range of drive and automa-tion scenarios.
DCC – an overview of the advantages
• Higher-level controls are relieved, machine sequences
can be simply programmed at lower costs and local
processing in the drive increases the overall machine
performance. As a whole, the implementation of
modular machine concepts is further simplified.
• To define the open-loop and closed-loop control
functions, a user-friendly DCC Editor is used to select
blocks from a predefined library. These are then
graphically interconnected with one another by
dragging and dropping them. Every block can be
used as often as necessary. The program behavior
can be verified and when a fault develops, the cause
can be identified using test and diagnostic functions.
• The block library includes a wide selection of closed-
loop control, arithmetic and logic blocks so that even
extensive open-loop and closed-loop control func-
tions can be implemented in the drive. In addition to
the drive control, winder functions, PI controllers,
ramp-function generators and wobble generators
can also be simply implemented in the drive.
• There is a wide range of arithmetic functions to
monitor and change parameters; these functions
include absolute-value generators, dividers and mini-
mum/maximum evaluation elements. All of the usual
logic functions can be selected to logically combine,
evaluate and sense binary signals (AND, XOR,
switch-in/switch-out delay element, RS flipflops,
counters).
EPos with integrated monitoring functionsThe function integrated in EPos that monitors traversingrange limits, following error and zero speed increases theoperational reliability and indicates operational faultsearly on. This makes it easier to generate the machineprogram. The field bus connection via standardizedProfidrive profile also plays a role. And commissioning isalso simpler and more transparent thanks to the precon-figured parameterizing screen forms in the SINAMICScommissioning tool STARTER.

The perfect solution – quickly and reliablyUsing the SINAMICS S120 Cabinet Modules and chassisunits, complete drive groups can be interlinked andassembled with one another. This is because it is possibleto combine module types with freely selectable power rat-ings as required. Fast and straightforward, due to thestandardized interfaces that are harmonized with oneanother.
For paper machines, rolling mills, test stands or cranes –that typically require multi-motor applications with highpower ratings, both the modular cabinet units as well asalso the chassis units are the ideal solution as part of amodular system.
The highly flexible, modular system follows the trend toshift intelligence into the drive, which is achieved using its harmonized, standard interfaces. A modular cabinet system is available in the form of
the SINAMICS S120 Cabinet Modules. These can be
used to engineer almost any drive solution for multi-
motor drive systems in plant construction. Thanks to
the standardized interfaces, the modules can be
interlinked and combined to quickly configure ready-
to-connect drive solutions up to 4500 kW (6000 HP).

Low costs for plant integration, engineering and installationThe SINAMICS S120 concept means that drives can bequickly and simply integrated into overall plants andsystems, both mechanically and electrically. Further,engineering costs are reduced and with them, theengineering risks. The drive system can be flexiblyadapted to plant-specific requirements through anextensive range of options. A drive system can bequickly and reliably engineered using the SIZER engi-neering tool; using the STARTER commissioning tool,technicians can even configure complex systems in anextremely short time, without having any special sys-tem know-how.
Reliable and line-friendlySINAMICS S120 also takes into account the trend toline-friendly converters due to the increasing demandsof power supply utilities. Its constant regulated DC linkvoltage essentially decouples the motor voltage fromthe influence of the line supply voltage. On the otherhand, the low-frequency harmonics fed back into theline supply can almost be completely neglected throughthe optional “Clean Power Filter”. Further, the losses inthe low-voltage distribution, line-side transformer andline feeder cables, caused by harmonic currents, are eliminated.

N-compact motorsBy combining SINAMICS S120 with N-compact low-volt-age motors, system solutions can be implemented thatare precisely tailored to individual requirements.
N-compact motors distinguish themselves through theirrugged design with gray cast-iron frame and bearingend shields as well as their long service life. The com-pact design makes it easy to integrate them into plantsand reduces the dimensions of the complete unit. The2- to 8-pole motors are convincing thanks to their highefficiency and availability.
The right moment – torque motorsIn addition to N-compact, it is also possible to use1FW3 torque motors and 1FW4 (HT-direct) motors.State-of-the-art direct drive concepts can be imple-mented using these motors – and not only that, theymake gearboxes superfluous.
