‘Tis the season, and Happy Holidays to all. Amidst the merriment and festivities consider a few things. Be safe and careful out there. Tempers tend to shorten at holidays. Smile and be nice when you go out among the throngs shopping or sightseeing or just enjoying the paradise that we all call Sarasota. And remember a continuing refrain that could be viral on the Internet: Shop local. Buy local. Help our business neighbors rather than the big box store owners. Below is in no way a complete listing of fun stuff to see or do for the holidays, but if there isn’t something listed below to bring out a little holiday cheer then you indeed must be a Grinch.

Not so little ‘Little Harv’ The bromeliad Aechmea Little Harv presents both long-lasting red blooms when grown in full sun. After blooming the central plant dies, but its pups come back to re-bloom the next year. As with most bromeliads, Little Harv likes pretty much all kinds of soil and light, plus lots of water. Bromeliads make interesting house plants as well.

Approximately 3 years after converting The Landings Plaza Albertson’s store to a Publix operation Publix announces extensive renovation of the interior of the store. Store hours will remain unchanged during the renovation process, according to store manager Tim Haggard. Some results
work will be underway. A full modernization of both “look” and equipment is expected. Major equipment will be replaced including updating of air-conditioning, refrigeration display units, the bakery and deli. All new equipment will be up to the highest energy-saving standards. Haggard describes the new look as what you’d expect a newly built Publix to look like. He adds he’s pleased the store will remain in full operation throughout the process The Landings store is the second largest Publix store in Sarasota. Only one, the Plaza at Palmer Ranch, Tamiami Trail and Central Sarasota Parkway, is larger.

Millions and more for Siesta Beach Renovation of amenities to America’s #1 beach may turn out to have a #1 price tag too. A year ago the estimated cost to rehab parking, concessions, walkways and other features ran $17 million. During a November Sarasota County Commission meeting, that remained the number. But at a public meeting later that night, the estimate jumped to $21.5 million. And if additional improvements were added, the cost would jump to $26.7 million. County Commissioner Joe Barbetta has been hounding county administration to get the project under way because construction is cheap during the economic downtown, and interest rates are low. But as the economy begins to recover, Barbetta is worried prices may escalate further.
Eat Here comes to key Sean Murphy plans to open his third Eat Here restaurant next year in Siesta Village. The restaurant features local food, including seafood and farm products. Murphy plans to feature music on the weekend at the former site of Total Tennis in the village. It will be open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the weekdays and close at 11 p.m. on weekends. Murphy hopes to open in January. Total Tennis moved out after 35 years in the village, citing parking issues.
Gulf Gate Library moves With demolition scheduled for January, the Gulf Gate
Mall will house the library’s operations while the old building is demolished and a new library rises at the same site. Gulf Gate Library is one of the county’s busiest, and during the two-year construction period for the new facility, patrons will be forced to drive south about two miles to the Sarasota Square Mall. County staff said the mall offered the best price per square foot, while offering adequate parking and telecommunication services. County libraries serves as internet portals for patrons lacking a personal computer. The temporary library will be in the southwest part of the mall, just north of the JC Penny store. Groundbreaking is set for the new library in February, 2013 with completion expected in May 2014.
Isles bridge sinking Siesta Isles is connected to the key by a small bridge, but the humpbacked span is settling into the muck. County engineers plan to attack the problem early next year, and estimates

the end of September, the county collected $13.9 million. The money goes for tourism promotion and the arts. Siesta Key remains a major contributor, kicking in about $4.17 million. It was a record year for Siesta Key tourism.
Beach Road repairs, again North Beach Road on Siesta Key is a guaranteed wash-out. Any tropical storm within 50 miles over the past half-century has undercut the asphalt and caused the road to either collapse or become too dangerous for use. Each time Sarasota County comes to the rescue. Ditto with Tropical Storm Debbie last June, which brought big-time rain and those deadly southwesterly winds to chop anew at the sand under North Beach Road. All of Siesta Beach was under water.

Kildahls win world championship Congratulations to Steve and Stephen Kildahl, the father-
boaters won the 2012 world championship from the Offshore Powerboat Association. Steve runs a boat maintenance and repair shop on Central Avenue and Stephen is a college student. They’ve been racing together since Stephen was 16. The world championship is Steve’s fourth, and the second for 21-year-old Stephen. They race a 30-foot Phantom in the Super V Lite class. Offshore powerboat racing is a grueling and dangerous sport. Last year in Key West, Bradenton racer Joey Gratton was killed, the third fatality in three days of competition.

Locally owned, Canada Med Services / Discount Prescription services has been serving Sarasota and surrounding counties since 2003. As a small local company, we have always believed in giving back to the community and have done so in countless ways over the years. We have been active supporters of SPARC, Parkinson Research Foundation as well as many other organizations. Our team will walk for a cause, buy the wrapping paper from local schools and patiently wait for the Girl Scout “Cookie Season” to begin.
In these unpredictable economic times, many of our customers shared with us that they had to cut back on supporting local organizations. In thinking about this with our staff, the idea of “Charity of Choice” was born. The idea

Needless to say it was a bit more complex than it sounds, but after months of interviews with customers, calls with non-profits and some serious computer programing, “Charity of Choice” was launched.
Customers who place an order through our service have
program. Each time a customer places an order a donation is made by the company back to the selected organization. Since the April 2012 start, more than 350 customers are participating and close to $3,000 has been raised. The success of the program has been great; we have decided to expand the program to Manatee County and will be adding 15 more organizations for 2013
Charity of Choice is our way of saying ‘thanks’ to the local
organizations who support our community and do so much for the arts, culture, sciences, education, health, animal rescue and community outreach. The feedback from our organizations has been fantastic. “We are honored to be a part of the Charity of Choice program,” said Emily Sperling, President of Shelter Box USA. “Canada Med has found a unique way to give back—by engaging its customers in the process. Because of their generous support, Shelter Box is able to provide shelter, warmth and dignity to families affected by disasters around the globe.” “Collaborating with businesses such as Canada Med Services is a win-win for everyone. On behalf of our more than 5,000 kids we serve, we are grateful to be included as a ‘Charity of Choice’ and look forward to a lasting partnership,” says Bill Sadlo, President and CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County. “The Education Foundation of Sarasota County is honored
its Charity of Choice program, 37 customers are making a difference in the lives of our community’s children,” explains Laura Breeze, CFRE, Advancement Director, and Education Foundation of Sarasota County. She continues, “Their support is underwriting urgent initiatives serving the 42,000 students enrolled in our public schools, from Newtown to North Port. With the help of these generous donors, we are giving students what they need to succeed in the classroom – and in life.” Canada Med Services/Discount Prescription Services, with its headquarters in Sarasota, has specialized for the past 10 years in providing safe, reliable and affordable (from 30% -70% savings) prescription medications to clients all over the US. Giving Back|The Players Theatre Gives Back.
The Players Theatre in Sarasota is a non-professional community theatre that has been in existence since the 1930’s. Literally one half of the volunteers working on a production have at one time been professional paid performers, Many professionally trained Directors, Choreographers and Musical Directors have been hired to lead them. Given the mix of professionals with non-professional actors and students, the newer actors get superb training while the experienced actors get a chance to maintain their skills. It’s a win-win situation.
In addition to its regular theatrical productions, The Players Studio has classes for children as young as three years old through adult. Courses are offered in Acting, Singing and Dancing at all levels of experience. There are classes in improving audition skills, rewriting and performing “fractured fairy tales”, and in songwriting. For adults, there is also beginning, intermediate, and advanced playwriting, and a workshop entitled “Intense Tap Dancing” for experienced tappers only.
Over the decades, Players Theatre has been the training ground for some big names. Montgomery Clift made his acting debut on the Players stage during the 1932-1933 season. As a teenager, Jayne Meadows also performed on this stage and went on to stardom. Polly Holiday was in two shows at The Players, and then moved on to be a television star playing Flo in the sitcom “Alice”. She was nominated for a 1990 Tony award for her performance as Big Mama in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”.

Ashley Rose Orr attended The Players Performing Arts School and went on to Broadway to perform the role of Gretl in “The Sound of Music”. The creator of “Pee-wee’s Playhouse”, Paul Rubens, also began at The Players when he was only in junior high. Paul and I were cast in several of the same productions. Since I was the grownup and he was the kid, I did the driving. Thus began a friendship that has lasted for decades. In high school, Paul came back to Southside Elementary School where I was the music teacher to help me put on a production of YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN. On a recent trip to NYC,

|Frank Colson: Artistic Explorer By Artemis Harper Frank Colson is the ultimate artistic explorer. He has worked creatively in a variety of media: clay, bronze, drawing, fabric, light, theatre, music, writing, radio and television. His artwork has been exhibited in cities all over the world: Barcelona, Stockholm, Tokyo, and New York City, to name but a few. He is famed for his remarkable horses, spirit forms, fabric wall hangings, tiles, luminescent light sculptures, fountains and masks. In Sarasota, he created the life sized bronze American Doughboy at the foot of Main Street. He also created a six foot interpretation of a Frank Lloyd Wright Sculpture that stands near the entrance to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. The story of Frank’s voyage of artistic exploration is as remarkable as his wide range of work. Born in Paris during the 1930’s, Frank was the child of a Latvian ballerina and an American opera singer. The couple soon went their individual ways, with mother and child staying in Paris. His father, tenor Frank Harold Colson, moved back to America, acquired a new wife and started another family. Tragically, Frank’s mother, Lily Anderson, contracted tuberculosis and died when her only child was three. As the drums of war beat in Europe, arrangements were made for young Frank to be brought from Paris to New York on the Queen Mary. He was met at the NYC docks by his aunt, Elizabeth McGregor, who was to raise him in her home in Los Angeles. Frank was now four and a half and spoke only French. Frank’s best friend in elementary school had a mother who worked for Walt Disney. She made celluloid drawings that were used for Mickey Mouse animation. Inspired by her work, the kids started a cartoon art club where they made freehand copies of drawings from comic books. Frank’s tour of military duty was colorful. A reluctant

In the 1970’s he began creating original sculptures in wax, making molds, and casting them in bronze. For a few years, Frank also operated a small hand-made tile factory in San Miguel de Allende. In 1980 he opened a Bronze Casting business on Central Avenue with son Sean as his right hand man. Here, sculptures were cast for other artists. Super Senior / Senior Father Son Tennis Tournament 2012 The Year of the Upsets By Joe Venezia

The teams and their family members remarked on how much they enjoy playing here at The Landings - evidenced by the number of returning teams. Which brings me to my long list of “thanks” - Dee and Ralph Ricapito for all the time and effort you put in to help make the tournament the success it always is - getting host families and coordinating the luncheon. Barbara Pendrell and her group of volunteers: Colin Wendell, Deb Doherty, Truman Menefee, Helen Bella, Laurie Fitch, Meg Loomis and returning from South Carolina, Richard Ashwick. You all did a fantastic job. To all the members who year after year bring such great dishes and make everyone feel welcome at the luncheon. Rudy Blohm for all the fantastic pictures you took each day of the players. They really appreciated being able to take their photos with them. Guy Mileni in
the umpire chair - you always keep the matches running smoothly. Kevin for stringing a WHOLE LOT of racquets
assistance. Hans, Edvin and Michel for grooming the courts to perfection. I can’t tell you how many positive comments I received from the players. Once again we had a large group of sponsors that I look forward to working with each year and I greatly appreciate your support and involvement in the Tournament. To Publix for the generous gift card that was used to purchase “breakfast fuel” for the players among other things. Demetrios - for the excellent pizzas, pasta and salad that was enjoyed at the players dinner. And to the members of The Landings Racquet Club. It goes without saying that without your support each year I could not run a tournament that is so well received by the players, families and spectators alike. Thank you all !!!!!

A Hearing Loop was recently installed In the Lakeside Clubhouse at The Landings to help people with hearing loss maximize their hearing by using the t-coil (telecoil) in their hearing aid(s) or cochlear implant(s) devices. The Hearing Loop Group, Inc. in St. Petersburg provided the installation. A hearing loop is a cable that is installed around a designated area, usually a room or a building, and is connected to a sound system. The loop generates an electromagnetic signal which is picked up by the t-coil (telecoil) in a hearing aid or a cochlear implant.
installation sites include concert halls, auditoriums, places

Welcome to our newest permanent and seasonal residents!
This is the party season which, for many of us, means the Appetizer Season. The burning question, then, becomes: Which wines go well with all those appetizers?Let’s take a look at some of the options, using various deli platters as our starting point. (all of these platters – and others – are available from our deli at the Crescent Beach Grocery.)
Cheese and Meat Platters The typical cheese and meat platter has mild (turkey), heavy (roast beef) and spicy (salami) meats as well as mild (mozzarella) and sharp (smoked gouda) cheeses. No one wine matches perfectly with all of these flavors, but a very light white will be overwhelmed by most of them. Try a spicier white like Sauvignon Blanc or an oakey Chardonnay. Milder reds, like a Carmenere or Malbec will also
the Australian reds, like Shiraz. A party is also a good time to try out one of more of the less heavy red blends, like Troublemaker or Apothic Red. I personally like Nouveau Beaujolais, which is only available this time of year, with dishes like this or, indeed, with the Holiday dinner itself.
Wings Wing platters are still very popular and come in a variety of flavors. Hot wings need a pretty heavy wine to cut through the heat, which may be the only flavor you can actually taste. Heavy reds are more appropriate here.
This is the time for a Merlot or Cabernet. If your taste runs to Chinese-style wings, a spicy white should complement them nicely. Sauvignon Blanc works here, but you should really try Gewerztraminer. Gewerz
to be a natural for Chinese 5-Spice. Bar-B-Que, especially Texas-style with a heavy red sauce, is more about the sauce than the chicken. A strong red will do well with ‘que. If you want a little variety, try a less well-known wine like Petite Syrah or one of my favorites, Zinfandel.
Wraps Wraps make a great appetizer and are really very easy to pair with wine. Just about any white pairs up with turkey. This is a great place for Pinot Grigio (or try a Pinot Gris from Oregon, it is the same grape) or an unoaked Chardonnay. The other meats tend to be toned down by the bread and the condiments, so it is best to avoid the big reds. This is also a nice place to try out one or more of the newer red blends. They tend to feature some of the less common red varietals and have an interesting – and

with wines of different characters and tastes. If you are having a Holiday party, try a mix of foods and wines. Good food and good wine naturally go together so use this opportunity to experiment and expand your guests’ horizons.

Q: The holidays are coming and people tell me not to give people food to dogs. This is very hard with all the visitors. What are the risks to my dog?
A: This time of the year is such a joyous one, and we love to celebrate with gifts and food. Our pets are part of our family and share with us. However our foods may not agree with them. Fatty foods and changes in food can lead to sudden vomiting and diarrhea in dogs and cats. Chicken bones and turkey bones can be sharp and get stuck in the bowel. Sometimes, dietary indiscretions can also lead to pancreatitis, which can be life threatening. Tinsel is fun and ribbons attract cats. Bouncy toys attract dogs and particularly puppies. Next thing you know your pet is very sick and needs to have surgery for a foreign body removal. So celebrate with your pet but do not give them rich foods, and make sure they stay safe by keeping all temptations away from them, thus avoiding a big veterinary bill.
Q: I heard that this year red tide is back. How does my dog get red tide toxicity and how can I avoid it? What are the signs?
A: Indeed red tide is here and already we have seen cases. While in humans red tide causes a lot of lung irritation, it is much more serious for dogs. The larger threat in our dogs is that
water. The toxin reaches the brain and leads to severe tremors
diuretic (Lasix). We also can use special medications, intralipids, to draw the toxin out. Really the best way to avoid it is to keep your pet away from the water and any sea byproducts during red tide warning. If tremors are noted, please bring your pet to the vet ASAP.
If you have a question about your pet please email your question to criticalvetcare@gmail.com. Each month Dr. Chauvet will choose a few Q&A’s to share with readers.

I had always thought the holidays weren’t prime boat time, but apparently a lot of people do go out on the water this time of year. Unfortunately, some of those people don’t return from their day on the water. “Florida’s beautiful winter weather means our waters are crowded year-round, even during winter holidays,” according

Q: How long have you been bartending? A: On and off since I got out of school.
Q: What was the strangest or funniest thing you experienced at work?
A: I frequently supplemented my income by modeling. One of my jobs was for a Pharmaceutical company based in London and Sarasota.
The shots were (in my opinion) cheesy featuringme in a low cut red and white halter
with Daisy Dukes, sitting on a milk jugin a provocative pose.
I was told the company was looking for an“all American girl” and that the pictures
would be used for “point of purchase”personal products to be sold in the U.K.
I happily cashed my checks and forgot about it.Nine months later a group of guys visitingfrom Ireland walked into the bar insisting
I looked familiar. I assured them thatI was never in Ireland. Imagine my
surprise when they all arrived atthe same conclusion; I was the
“farm girl” on the condom boxesat their local drug store.
I still have the halter…Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A: Stuff my face and drink lots of beer.
Q: How would you describe yourself?A: Deeply disturbed (in a good way) with a
dark, sarcastic sense of humor.
Q: How would you describe Turtle Beach Pub?A: Turtle’s Pub is one of the few remaining true“Old Florida” establishments on the west coast
of Florida. Located on the south end ofSiesta Key it is truly unique.
Q: When’s the best time to see you?
A: Anytime you’re hungry or thirsty duringthe day time every Tuesday through Saturday.
You can see me at Turtle’s or possibly on the beach!
An 80 year old man was having his annual checkup and the doctor asked him how he was feeling. “I’ve never been better!” he boasted. “I’ve got an eighteen year old bride who’s pregnant and having my child! What do you think about that?” The doctor considered this for a moment, and then said, “Let me tell you a story. I knew a guy who was an avid hunter. He never missed a season. But one day went out in a bit of a hurry and he accidentally grabbed his umbrella instead of his gun.” The doctor continued, “So he was in the woods and suddenly a grizzly bear appeared in front of him! He raised his umbrella, pointed it at the bear and squeezed the handle.” “And do you know what happened?” the doctor queried. Dumbfounded, the old man replied “No.” The doctor continued, “The bear dropped dead in front of him!” “That’s impossible!” exclaimed the old man. “Someone else must have shot that bear.” “That’s kind of what I’m getting at...” replied the doctor.

of the rooms beforehand.”
One Sunday a pastor told the congregation that the church needed some extra money and asked the people to prayerfully consider giving a little extra in the offering plate. He said that whoever gave the most would be able to pick out three hymns. After the offering plates were passed, the pastor glanced down and noticed that someone had placed a $1,000 bill in offering. He was so excited that he immediately shared his joy with his congregation and said he’d like to personally thank the person who placed the money in the plate. A very quiet, elderly and saintly lady all the way in the back shyly raised her hand. The pastor asked her to come to the front. Slowly she made her way to the pastor. He told her how wonderful it was that she gave so much and in thanksgiving asked her to pick out three hymns. Her eyes brightened as she looked over the congregation, pointed to the three handsomest men in the building and said, “I’ll take him and him and him.”

Throughout your life, you’ve learned a lot from your music. You know where Joltin’ Joe has gone, and what you might want to do if it’s your party. You’ve gotten dancing lessons from songs, reasons for walking the line, and
even heard instructions on counting, spelling, languages, and when to hold ‘em or fold ‘em. You can learn a lot from your tunes. And as you’ll see in the new book “Luck or Something Like It” by Kenny Rogers, the singer of those songs gets a lot out of them, too. Kenneth Rogers started life poor. Born into a Houston housing project in 1938, Rogers was the fourth child of an alcoholic father and a mother who spouted lasting wisdom. He recalls being a quiet boy in school and a good boy at home, thanks to his mother’s lessons, but the most enduring memories were of times spent at his grandfather’s East Texas farm. Every now and then, Rogers says, his father’s family would gather there to play music and sing. His father
others had guitars. Rogers says he sat with his feet under
Though he was “girl crazy” when young, he was also guitar crazy and took advantage of a local music store owner’s generosity in a “picker’s corner.” Rogers saved
he started a band. That was a great way to learn, but it
didn’t last and Rogers went solo – both professionally
That hurt, but it didn’t ruin his momentum. He recorded a minor hit, became “Kenny,” appeared on American Bandstand, and ended up in a jazz band, which opened doors for his career. He met many performing
stars, left the jazz band, then joined the New Christy Minstrels. When they disbanded, some members formed The First Edition and, because of an accidental stroke of luck, Kenny
When The First Edition broke up, Rogers “didn’t know how to be a solo singer.” Within two years, he learned fast. I’ve read my share of celebrity biographies and I can tell you that the vast majority of them make my eyes roll. But this one is different. This one is good... Really good.
Reading this book reminded me of dusky summer evenings, porch swings, and good friends. Author Kenny Rogers tells stories that are entertaining and sometimes funny, with good and bad tales and, in a few cases, admitted responsibility for wrongs. Rogers writes of
things that interest him – and that’s what keeps readers interested, too. Fans are going to like this book especially, but I’m tickled to say that there’s something here for anybody who ever heard Rogers sing. Grab the pages of “Luck or Something Like It,” and you’ll want to hold ‘em.

Capt. Curt’s Souvenir Shop,Beach Bazaar and Davidson’s Drugs
There are 12 species of otters worldwide. This mammal appears on every continent except Australia and Antarctica. The largest of the freshwater species is the giant otter of the Amazonian basin, weighing up to 66 pounds; the shorter but heavier sea otter of the north
Throughout its range, otter populations are declining as a result of habitat loss and the harvesting—often overharvesting—of its meat and fur. The only aquatic member of the weasel family, the otter is renowned for its playfulness. Curious and entertaining to observe, it is a favorite at zoos and aquariums. Children seem to gravitate to the otter naturally, as they do with the dolphin. In the wild, the otter is far less playful but is still known to slide down a muddy embankment repeatedly or engage in other behavior that can only be described as having fun. Aside from primates, the sea otter is the only mammal known to use tools when harvesting food. The diet of the river otter that inhabits all of Southwest Florida is largely made up of fish, both fresh and saltwater
species. It prefers slower-moving
panf ish , and c a t f i s h , b u t will catch just
it can. It also
h o r s e s h o e crabs, frogs, coots, ducks, beetles, and on rare
occasions, muskrats and marsh rabbits. An otter is capable of holding its breath for up to four minutes, diving as deep as 60 feet and swimming as fast as six miles per hour. Its fur is so dense that its skin never gets wet. Young otters, even though they are born with webbed feet and will eventually spend most of their lives in the water, must be taught how to swim by their parents. The otter is very vulnerable to water quality issues and will quickly abandon any polluted lakes or streams. Poor water quality has been a major factor in the otter’s decline worldwide. The river otter is slowly being reintroduced into states where it once was plentiful, including Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, New Mexico, North and South Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Over the past few centuries it has been trapped for its high-quality fur, causing localized extinctions. Most states now prohibit trapping and hunting the otter. The otter is preyed upon by alligators, bobcats, coyotes, and wolves. Because of its unusual method of running, arching its back high into the air as it runs, it is very vulnerable to automobile collisions. Oil spills are especially troublesome for the otter. The Exxon Valdez spill in Prince William Sound killed more than 1,000 sea otters and dozens of river otters within days. An offshore spill in Florida would not impact the river otter as severely because it tends to favor freshwater over saltwater or brackish environments. The same cannot be said for the manatee, a species that could literally be wiped out along the gulf should a spill like the Deepwater Horizon occur close to the coastline.

Landin Don Bruns’ latest novel was released mid-November. It is number six in Don’s quirky ‘Stuff’ mystery series featuring the somewhat under-qualified, but lovable duo of private investigators, Skip Moore and James Lessor, whose antics leave you wondering if they will ever grow up. If you haven’t read the earlier ‘Stuff’ books, Hot Stuff, like the others is a stand-alone novel, but a great place to start. Featuring murder in a world class restaurant, this book will keep you intrigued, as the undercover sleuths try to solve the crime and stay alive. Recipe: 1 pinch mystery, 1 cup suspense, 2 tbs lovable characters, top with humor, add your favorite beverage, and settle in for a great read!

Sarasota Home Sales up 24% By Brian Tresidder / Key Solutions Real Estate
the early fall months. We are very optimistic for a strong winter and spring season. We have not seen any indications that this market is going to be slowing down any time soon,” says Redding. The inventory of available homes is at a decade low now. This is driving buyers to attend open houses and make strong offers again. When asked about this low inventory, Redding replied, “Most of our agents are reporting multiple offers on their listings and running into the same situation when representing buyers as well. The days of low ball offers are quickly becoming a thing of the past. If the property is priced for the market and shows well, there is going to be a lot of interest. If buyers want the property, many are realizing they are going to have to be aggressive.” For those considering whether to list or not, now is a great time to sell. “We have a strong sales market, low competition, and the beginning of the winter sales season just around the corner. Our Key Solutions experts are happy to sit down with anyone thinking about selling to provide a detailed market report and assist in determining if the time is right for you.” Sales prices on Sarasota single family homes have gone up nicely. In October, the median sale price for a single family home was $176,000. To compare, that number in September was $169,950 and a year ago $149,838. Single family home sales prices are up 17% average in the last year. The listing prices are also following this sales trend with more coming on the market at higher initial asking prices. Sarasota Condominiums for sale are increasing in price, but with some dips. In October, the median sales price of condominiums was $160,000. That was actually down from September when the median was $175,400. However, the October number is substantially higher than the same number a year ago which was $143,000. That marks an 11% increase over the past twelve months. Sarasota foreclosures and short sales have seen drastic reductions as well. As of now, these types of listings make up only 14 percent of the market. This is down from 15.4% in September and 17% from the
beginning of January. Many lenders are working with homeowners to try to keep them in their homes, which is impacting the inventory of short sales and foreclosures. One of the strongest indicators of the growing strength of the Sarasota real estate markets is the months of inventory available. If sales continue at current pace, it would take roughly 4.4 months to deplete the available listings in single family homes and 6.6 months for condominiums. That might sound like a large inventory, but when comparing that to late 2008 we can see the substantial decrease. In November of that year, there were 24 months of inventory in single family homes and 41.7 months in condominiums. When looking as recently as the past year, we can see how the market has turned. From October 2011 to October 2012 we have seen a decrease of 20% for the number of available properties. This tightening inventory means buyers have fewer properties from which to choose. Because of the feeding frenzy in certain price ranges, multiple offers are becoming more common after several years of absence from the real estate scene. So, what does this mean for the home buyer and seller out there? According to Keith M. Redding, “If you are considering selling your property, you should speak with an expert from Key Solutions Real Estate about the current market conditions to determine if it is the right time for you. Our proven methods will showcase your home or condo across the globe and put you in front of anyone looking to make a purchase
low mortgage rates available and this is driving many to buy. In many instances, these rates are making buying more economic than continuing to rent. For investors and cash buyers, housing prices are still incredibly low in comparison to other investments and the potential returns. Our Buyer’s Agents will walk you through the process of making a purchase and determine the best course for you. Whether you are looking to sell

Siesta Beach has become the home to what is considered one of the largest drum circles in the nation. This is not a commercial event but local phenomenon that began spontaneously and now has a life of its own. If you’re visiting the area, or live nearby be sure to check this one out. There are loads of drummers and belly dancers plus lots of families, beach going onlookers, & curious tourists, especially during the winter tourist season when the crowds can swell into the thousands. Bring a blanket or chair, most everyone does.
It happens every Sunday starting a couple of hours before sunset, and ends around 10 PM. This gathering meets up just south of the main pavilion between lifeguard stands 3 and 4 on Siesta Public Beach. Just follow your ears.
This is true community - free-form drumming, open to the public and entirely improvised in-the-moment. Instruments center around drums and percussion, but may include other instruments
Participation is voluntary and includes singing or chanting, dancing, relaxing, and listening. It’s always a good time with solid musicality, dancing, and a great vibe. Admission is free. The Siesta Key Beach address is: 948 Beach Road, Sarasota, Florida 34242 to get more info visit the website www.drumcircles.net/sarasota.html or there is a Yahoo group, and a Facebook group named “Siesta Key Drum Circle” just search for them.

Well, back in the day before Florida was known as a tourist and snowbird destination Florida’s cattle industry was the biggest in the east, shipping beef to northern states as well as to Key West, Cuba, and the Bahamas. Cattle roamed freely in the Florida woodlands and had to be rounded up before being sold and shipped up north or to Cuba.
Many of the earliest settlers who ventured in this direction were cattle drovers or cow hunters as they were often called in the late 1800s. They were known for their ability to handle and “crack” large leather whips in driving their herds. Except for certain coastal areas, Florida was still very much a rather rough and tumble frontier well into the 1840’s and 1850’s not achieving statehood until 1845. South and central Florida, which especially lent itself to cattle grazing and cow towns, had as tough a reputation as some of the territories out west.
Since lariats, or lassos, didn’t work in the thick underbrush these cow hunters used whips to round up the cattle. Two whips were needed – one 12 to 18 feet in length for horseback use and an 8 to 10 foot length for use on foot. The whips were not used to strike the cattle, but were actually popped or “cracked,” resulting in a sound
the cattle moving and would resound for several miles.
When early settlers heard the sound they would say, “Here come the Crackers.” The name has stuck and the term “Florida Cracker” is still used today to describe native born Floridians that have lived in the state for many generations. It is considered a source of pride to be descended from “frontier people who did not just live
repellent, and screens.”
What is a Florida Cracker’?

Stone Crab Season Is OpenMany years ago I wrote that the start of stone crab season
Oct. 15 should be a holiday.
in Southwest Florida. The season runs from Oct. 15 through May 15. Fall and winter are best times for the colossal claws. “Colossal,” by the way, is the biggest of the big of the claws from the biggest of the big of crabs. It’s also the costliest, sometimes running up to $36 a pound, which reaps the customer about two claws. Sometimes less than two. Smaller grades have smaller prices. Stone crabs are big yellowish-brownish-black-spotted critters that haunt the bottom and, true to their name, like to hide around stones in the Gulf of Mexico during the summer as they grow. As winter comes and the cold fronts move down from the north, crabs start to prowl closer to shore and into the bays.
But unusual in the green world is the fact that environmentalists love stone crabs too because they are a truly sustainable industry. Only claws are taken, and the crab is let loose to grow another pair for another season. Here’ a comment from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission regarding the one-claw or two-claw take: “Although it is currently lawful to harvest both of a stone crab’s claws, this practice leaves the stone crab with few alternatives to defend itself from predators. “Although the crab can still obtain minimal amounts of food with no claws, having one claw will enable the crab to obtain greater amounts of food in a shorter amount of time. Stone crabs have the ability to grow back their claws, but this process requires a large amount of energy in the form of food.” Claws have to be 2 ¾ inch long from the elbow to the smaller
needed to take stone crab claws. Crabs are mostly caught in traps baited with a variety of unsavory-to-human but delectable-to-stone crab stuff. Some
whatever it takes to attract crabs into the traps. Recreational
The jury is out just what kind of season we’ll have for crab claws in 2012-13. Traps are going out to soak, but it’s tough to know how good the season will be so far, what the cost for claws will be, how available the claws will be or where they’ll be available. Walt’s Fish Market in Sarasota is a prime venue for scoring claws. Moore’s Stone Crab Restaurant on north Longboat Key, of course, will be a featured venue for claws. They’ve got their own boats, their own traps and a huge clientele for claws. On Siesta Key, Big Water Fish Market, located in Crescent Plaza offers a fresh and plentiful supply. Most other restaurants which feature seafood will feature crab claws. Enjoy. Most crabbers agree that it takes a hard cold front to move crabs offshore toward the beaches or into the bays. We had something of a cold front a couple weeks ago. Puny. Probably not enough to cause any real movement of crabs. Maybe.
In the day … To paraphrase Ben Green’s great book, “Finestkind,” “’Paul
sleep all day?’ That is how it has to start. That is how is always started — rough.”
Dad and this Little Roat weren’t commercial
guys and gals were bothering with stone crabs, too busy with mullet and pompano and the big-ticket
But when the nor’westerners started to howl for a day or two, and the furnace had to be lit in our
would be moving. We knew there would be brutally low tides and
Jeez, it was cold at the barely post-dark back then, as Dad and I would hunker down in our little boat
and putter toward Longboat Pass. We’d loaded up our tools. Long sticks we’d screwed hooks into back when that was legal, then longer metal rods with a 90-degree bend in them when regulations changed. And we had a couple buckets in the hope of having good luck. We were hunting for stone crabs with sticks. And prepared to bring home game. First stop was always along the side of the pass near the rocks. Sometimes we were lucky and could snag a few crabs that were blown into the pass by the strong winds and tides.
Just inside Longboat Pass at the north end of the little island
The trick was to walk along the seagrass beds and look for a mound of muck. Take stick. Poke stick into area around the mound. Find hole. Stick stick into hole and wiggle until there was a “click,” and you knew you had a crab that was after you. Gently, gently pull. Crab comes out, pissed. Grab crab — Dad and the Little Roat also eschewed nets — and snap off a claw, put it in bucket, drop crab, run away as it chased you,
Rules were different back in the day for the taking of stone crab claws. I think. We never took claws from female crabs.
the “feeder” claw in place. Dunno if those were real regs or just what Dad said. Today, both claws from both sexes may be taken except for “egg-bearing crabs.” Limits of quantity then were limitless. Today, don’t expect to take your sticks out and get more than 2 gallons of claws per vessel or 1 gallon per person.
We’d usually end up with a half-bucket-plus of claws. Shivering, off we’d go home.
Factoid The best way to eat stone crab claws is with friends. We’d get back. Mom would have a big pot of water boiling, claws would go in, come out, go into the refrigerator, and phone calls would start. Later that day we’d spread out newspaper on the dining room table and folks would come over for dinner. Most people used nutcrackers to get into the claws. As a Little Roat — Hey! I was like 12! — I liked a hammer. Crab meat was a bit mushier, but boy was it ever fun. And cleanup was easy. We just wrapped up the bits and pieces in the newspaper and thunked it all in the trash.

Here are some usefull tips:
|Rated #1 Beach In America by Dr. Beach... Siesta Public Beach, located inside Crescent Beach, is renowned for its truly breathtaking sunsets, easy-going waves, and gorgeous crystal white sand. The sand is 99% pure quartz, soft and cool to the touch. Among the many awards it has earned are the “Whitest, Finest Beach Sand in the World” (The Great International White Sand challenge, 1987), “The Best Sand Beach in America” (The Travel Channel, 2004) and for 2011, it was rated #1 beach in the 21st annual Top 10 Beach List, produced by coastal expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, Director of Florida Inter-national University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research. Walking along, or swimming and playing in the Gulf of Mexico or merely basking in the tropical sun is enough fun for many folks, but others are drawn by Siesta Beach’s many amenities, which include tennis and vollyball courts, shaded playground and picnic/barbecue areas and convienent concession stands. Shallow water near shorline and year-round lifeguard protection make it a great family beach. Beach wheelchairs can be borrowed to help special needs visitors cross the sand. There’s always something for everyone to do at Siesta Beach. It’s island location is within easy walking distance to many of the village shops and restaurants located in the Siesta Village.
Crescent Beach actually begins between beach access #2 & #3 and extends to beach access #13 with the southern part relatively secluded and quiet, as it has only one public access road. Located just south of Siesta Beach, the scene here tends to be more peaceful and private. At the southern tip of this beach is Point of Rocks - a lovely snorkeling and diving area that is rich with coral rock formations as well as colorful and abundant marine life. Crescent Beach visitors staying in nearby resorts, rentals and beach clubs rave (but only to their closest friends) about Siesta Key’s best “non-private private” beach.
Turtle Beach is at the southern tip of Siesta Key, and affords a sportier, “family play” beach experience. The beach has picnic areas, a playground, a vollyball court and horseshoe pit. There’s also a boat launch, and
There are restaurants nearby, with shopping and a few local night spots just a short drive away. Turtle Beach is a narrow beach, with a somewhat steeper incline. The sand on the beach tends to carry more shells, making it perfect for beach combers and
