Message from

Larry Frizzell

The Switch movie screening earlier this month was a big

success. It was attended by about 150 people, many of whom were

students enrolled in energy-related programs at BPCC and LSU-S. The

screening was followed by a question and answer session with a panel

of energy-related professionals.

The result was an enlightening exchange of ideas regarding our

energy use and future. I’d like to thank Carrie Salinas for an excellent

job of organizing and promoting the event and Gary Hanson for

moderating the screening and Q&A session. I think everyone there

benefitted from the experience.

In preparing for the screening, I ran across a few energy facts

that I thought were interesting.

In 2011, over half of the oil imported to the U.S. was from

OPEC countries¹.

The U.S. represents

21% of the world’s oil

demand, but only 4%

of the world’s

population².

Coal is used to

generate 42% of the

electricity in the U.S³.

CONNECTEDAT EVERY TOUCH POINT

The IHS suite of geoscience software—which includes IHS Petra®, Kingdom®, LOGarc™ and GeoSyn™—is designed to seamlessly connect to the industry’s leading source of critical Oil & Gas information, eliminating the need to move data manually from source to source and project to project. With this powerful new combination, users can streamline data transfer, enhance database performance and simplify project sharing. The result? Work?ows that connect like never before.

Connected work?ows mean that IHS customers spend less time looking for data and more time looking for the next big opportunity. It’s just one of the many ways that IHS helps to advance the decisions that advance the Oil & Gas industry.

Coal has “more hazardous air emissions than any other

industrial pollution sources”⁴.

Natural gas produces 22-29% fewer greenhouse gases than

diesel or gasoline powered vehicles².

Of the over 10 million natural gas vehicles around the world,

only 1.3% of them are in the U.S².

In 2011, the U.S. was the world’s largest natural gas producer³.

Transportation fuel costs are at least 15% less using natural gas

rather than diesel or gasoline².

The U.S. has enough natural gas to last over 100 years at the

current rates of consumption³.

A gallon of ethanol contains about 34% less energy than a

gallon of gasoline³.

It costs taxpayers $1.78 per gallon for ethanol made from corn

and $3.00 for cellulosic ethanol5.

There are over 600 million people in India without electricity6 .

Boone Pickens makes a lot of sense when he suggests that we

use natural gas - a plentiful domestic fuel - to reduce our dependence

on OPEC while lowering our emission of greenhouse gases. Using

natural gas as a “bridge” fuel should allow us time to develop

renewable energy sources like wind, solar, biomass, and geothermal.
