Dear Shaw Parents/Guardians/Families:
On June 2nd Shaw students, staff, and parents celebrated the many successes of our stu-
dents. Our VIP numbers have gone from a handful of students in the fall to an army in the
spring. 2015-16 VIP’s were required to have all B’s or better, no unexcused attendance,
and no office referrals for poor behavior. # 4-quarter VIP (Platinum) students will enjoy a
day at Silverwood. # 3-quarter Gold VIP’s will take in a movie at the IMAX Theater and
lunch in the park and Silver and Bronze VIP’s will enjoy a the afternoon off with movie
and popcorn here at Shaw.
New this quarter is our Most Improved and Most Inspirational awards. Staff were invited
to select a student for each award and say a few words about why they selected them for
the award. Honor Roll, Students of the Month, Perfect Attendance and Athletics were also
celebrated. We truly appreciate the parents who were able to join us this year and we will
do a better job of communicating in the future so that parents have plenty of time to plan.
On Thursday June 16th we will have a brief ceremony to celebrate our 8th graders mov-
ing up to high school and out 7th graders moving up to 8th grade. The celebration will
begin at 11:10 AM and seating will be made available for parents of 8th graders in chairs
on the floor. A short reception will follow where students and parents can enjoy a cookie
and a bottle of water. Please join us as we celebrate the end of the school year and the be-
ginning of the next step in the education of our students.
We are very proud of the accomplishments of all our students especially those 8th grad-
ers who have worked very hard to get ready socially and academically for the challenges
that face them in high school and beyond. Our hope is for our students to leave Shaw
proud of their accomplishments, with courage and preparation to succeed in high school,
and most importantly hope for their future.
Our Student Leadership welcomed our incoming 7th graders to Shaw during the week of
June 6-9th. Our ASB and AVID Elective Ambassadors educated the incoming 7th graders
on Commitments to our Community, AVID, PBIS, and beginning to create their individual
Dreams, Plans, and Goals both academically and socially to begin their journey at Shaw
Middle School.
Our Community Welcome Back Picnic and Street Fair will be on Aug. 24, 2016. The
Best Deal in Town! Students can purchase their Shaw AVID Binder , complete with
materials to begin the school year, at this event for a discounted price. More information
will be posted on the website and our Facebook page facebook.com/Shaw-Middle-School.
Sincerely,

SOCIAL STUDIES Mr. Lashbrook
7th grade students have recently com-
pleted Washington State History and
earned a High School graduation re-
quired credit! Over the course of the
semester they have learned about
Washington's transition from territory
to statehood, along with the ways it has
been impacted by the various groups of
people who inhabit it.
8th grade students have completed the
first portion of their American studies
by learning about the foundations of
American history and progressing up
through the Civil War and Reconstruc-
tion. They will resume this study in
High School as they move into the
modern era of American History.

MATH DEPARTMENT Mr. Paulson
As a Math Department we are relieved, anxious and excited. Relieved due to
state testing being completed. Anxious for a couple reasons. First, to see how
well everyone scored on the SBAC. But, also for all the 8th graders moving on
to high school and building on the skills they began developing at Shaw and to
see the type of young adults they become. Excited??? Need you ask? As sum-
mer approaches some of your children may be invited to attend Shaw's Summer
School. This is not punitive. This is an opportunity to develop skills to become
more successful in your future math classes. In any case, we hope you all have a
great summer. Good Luck to all of you!!
INVENT SHAW
On Saturday, May 14th, two very hard working Shaw students took first place
in their divisions at the Invent Washington State Competition. Trinity Finley
(8th grade MESA / AVID student) won a first place ribbon in the Jules Verne
category for her invention “Human Wings,” which explored the concept of in-
dependent human flight for transportation. Marquese Lane (7th grade Sprint
student) took home first place honors in the Working Models category for his
invention “Letsbot”, which addressed the social problems of bullying and isola-
tion with robotics. Congratulations inventors! Special thanks to Mr. Lee, the
Invent Shaw faculty advisor, for encouraging students to challenge themselves
and do their best.
Trinity writes:
“Any student in the 1st—8th grades in Eastern Washington state schools can
sign up for invention clubs. If there is a problem on the earth, you can fix it! All
you need is a bit of brains, imagination, and willingness to stick with it until the
problem is resolved. In this club you get to work with a classroom full of stu-
dents who have the same goal as you. The teamwork helps young inventors
work with problems and learn how to problem solve. The end result is a ribbon
and plenty of recognition. So put your idea out there and make the world a bet-
ter place.”

KITES ABOVE SHAW
When 400 handmade kites fill
the sky above Shaw Middle
School’s playfield Wednesday,
June 15th, it will be more than
just an experiment in the physics
of flight. It will be a celebration
of the future.
Shaw students have spent part
of the school year learning how
dreams, plans and goals fit to-
gether. They started the year
thinking about what their perfect
life at age 25 would look like.
Back-mapping from there, they
came up with a plan to help their
dreams become reality. Then
they created a list of goals neces-
sary to make their plan work.
Students built their kites last
week and decorated them to re-
flect their dream, plan and goals.

Congratulations to the Shaw Marching Band and Spirit Squad. They did a great job rep-
resenting Shaw at the Jr Lilac Parade on Saturday, May 14th. With the theme of “One
Hit Wonders”, the band played their best version of “Play That Funky Music” by Wild
Cherry as they marched in time through downtown Spokane. The Spirit Squad moved in
unison, bringing some great sparkle and life to the party! Great job Vikings!

The Designed Instruction and ABLE
classrooms recently had Bloomsday
Founder, Don Kardong, and his track
coach, Tracy Walters come and be our
guest speakers! They spoke about the
beginnings of the Bloomsday Run and
how it has grown. We learned that
Bloomsday started in 1977 in down-
town Spokane, with about 1000 run-
ners and the race began at 1:30
pm! This year there were approxi-
mately 60,000 runners and the race
now begins at 9:00 am. Don Kardong
participated in the 1976 Olympics in
Montreal, Canada, and he was
coached by Mr. Tracy Walters, who
was the Rogers High School track
coach at that time. Mr. Walters later
retired from Spokane Public Schools
and opened popular Walters Fruit
Ranch on Greenbluff (where our clas-
ses visited this past fall!)
It was SHAWSOME to have these
wonderful men be our guest speakers
and several of the Shaw Track Team
members were able to join us during
their visit!
The Youth and Police Initiative
(YPI) was held May 24th—June 1st.
This was the first time that YPI was
held on a Middle School level.
What is YPI? Students are able to
communicate with police in a safe
environment with the goal of break-
ing the cycle of mistrust that com-
monly exists with youth and police.
When students are given the oppor-
tunity to open up and have honest
dialogue about issues that they are
facing, are allowed to share their
stories and learn about men and
women behind the badge, anything
is possible. This reciprocal sharing
of life experiences, goals and
dreams humanizes their relationship
and shows how much these individ-
uals have in common.

class & graduation.

CHOIR NEWS Mrs. Lindseth
End of
School
Year Move-Up
Celebration
Friday, June 16th
11am
8th grade parents are
invited to attend and
sit in the chairs that are
being set up on the
gym floor.
There will be a small
gathering time at the
end of the celebration
with cookies and water.
Highlights from the Choir!
The choir program at Shaw includes three choirs, Open Choir (4th), Advanced
Choir and Open Choir (6th). We have worked together closely to prepare for our
concerts. Our April concert was based on the theme "Music Builds A Bridge",
which we demonstrated by inviting the Regal Elementary choir, directed by
Dawn Sapp, to join us. After our choirs performed, and Regal choirs per-
formed, we combined with the Regal choir to sing "Si, Si, Si, Si" with drum ac-
companiment followed by "The Cup Song". The audience enjoyed the percus-
sion rhythm of the cups played by Electra, Channa, Carlos, Olivia, Darya and
Mackenzie VanWinkle. At the conclusion of the concert the audience was invit-
ed to sing along with our huge combined choir of 80+ singers, which filled the
gym with singing voices. Refreshments for the choir were served in the choir
room.
Students that are interested in singing but have little experience have gained
knowledge and confidence by being part of the Open Choirs at Shaw. On Fri-
days, we set aside time for "Showcase", a time when students that have a song
they would like to perform are able to perform for our class. Other times we in-
vite the D.I. classes to come to the choir room to listen to our choirs sing the
songs they will be singing at the evening concert. Both of these events give ex-
perience and build confidence in the singers.
We have enjoyed listening to guest musicians in our classroom. Last
month, Mrs. Lindseth's son, Rees, a recent graduate of Northwest University,
came to Shaw to perform for the Advanced Choir. Rees shared how he became
interested in music, what it took to earn his music degree and answered questions
from the students.
Our eighth graders were especially interested, and were motivated to consider
singing in choir in high school.
Our choirs are currently preparing for the "end of the year" concert, scheduled for
June 8 at 7 PM. The theme of the concert will be "Live Your Dream". Students
will be sharing some of their dreams with the parents, staff and other friends that
attend the concert. Several students have solo parts or narrations to present. One
song enjoyed by all of the choirs is about "Tic Tacs" and actually involves tic
tacs, which makes things interesting! "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" is a song
about baseball and the choir and narrators will actually act out some of the
parts. Drama skills can be used in choir!
If you are considering being a part of the Shaw Choirs next year, feel free to stop
by the choir room to talk to Mrs. Lindseth! Music is the door to many opportuni-
ties and friends!
Looking ahead to next year!

NON PARENT PICK UP POLICY
In order for any student to be picked up by a non-parent at Shaw Middle
School, that person must be entered into Power School which is done by
completing the appropriate information in the Enrollment Verification
form. This form is available in the public office. The only exception to this
is if for extenuating reasons, a parent calls ahead of time to tell secretary/
administration that a non-registered person will be picking up their son/
daughter. That person must submit ID before being allowed to take the
student. This process will be valid during hours that the school is officially
open. Shaw MS student(s) will be picked up in the public office during
school hours. An authorized non-parent person can wait at the main
Shaw entrance for a student to exit at the end of the school day.
All non-parental registered personnel must submit ID to pick up students
from Shaw MS.
