DEAR MUSIC LOVERS
Summer in San Francisco is here and
June kicks off with the 35th Annual
San Francisco Jazz Festival! The
Festival—13 straight days of 43 concerts
in 5 different venues representing
artists from around the world in
SFJAZZ’s Hayes Valley backyard—
opens with a free party on June 6
featuring: brass and swing music; classic jazz on film; and local food, beer and wine.
The Festival’s lineup of incredible artists includes multi-instrumental phenomenon
Jacob Collier on June 7; an album release celebration on June 8 with Hudson,
featuring Jack DeJohnette, Larry Grenadier, John Medeski, and John Scofield; and
ukulele star Jake Shimabukuro at Davies Symphony Hall on June 11.
Some other highlights include: Jamaican jazz icon Monty Alexander and his
Harlem-Kingston Express, saxophonist Donny McCaslin’s quartet from David Bowie’s
Blackstar in a double bill with drummer Antonio Sánchez’s Migration, and bass
legend Stanley Clarke.
SFJAZZ Summer Sessions explores 6 different themes over 6 weeks with
42 performances. “Great Americas Songbook” is the umbrella theme for the first
2 weeks of Summer Sessions: The “Great American Songbook” (7|13-16) covers
songs from the South Carolina Gullah tradition to Ella Fitzgerald, Blues to Politics,
and New York to Oakland; the “Caribbean Basin Songbook” (7|20-23) features artists
from the area of the West Indies and South America including Mexico, Columbia,
the Dominican Republic, and Cuba, as well as Brazil and Argentina.
Week 3 of Summer Sessions (7|26–30) celebrates Pulitzer Prize-winning composer
John Luther Adams with a series of unforgettable performances in various locations.
The final three weeks include four nights with the late jazz icon and Afro-futurist
pioneer Sun Ra’s Arkestra (8|3–6), a groundbreaking multimedia show by Montreal
DJ Kid Koala (8|10–13), and a four-night series of tributes to Ray Charles, Nina
Simone, the Muscle Shoals sound, and Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew by UnderCover Presents that features many of the Bay Area’s best musicians (8|17–0).
I want to give particular thanks to SFJAZZ Members, whose ranks more than
quadrupled since groundbreaking in January 2013—from 3,000 to over 13,000.
The annual support of Members insures our mission of offering the highest level of
music and education programs—and the continued growth of jazz.
See you at the Center!

DEAR FRIEND OF SFJAZZSummer has arrived in San Francisco
and we’ve got our sweaters on once
again! With the season comes the time
to explore new music and reconnect
with your favorites too. Keeping that in
mind, SFJAZZ has put together nearly
a 100 concerts, classes and events for
you to enjoy through August.
If you’re reading this letter before the
concert, that means you walked past
the beautiful glass wall that is one of
the design centerpieces of the SFJAZZ
Center. On that wall, literally holding up
jazz to the world, are the names of hundreds of Members who have joined the Giant
Steps campaign to support the music and education programs that are the very core
of SFJAZZ values. There’s still time to become a Giant Steps Member (see SFJAZZ.org
for information) and we’d love to have your name on the glass in support of your truly
American art form—jazz. Join me on the wall!
We are very proud of our roots in the music of the African diaspora and collaborations
with artists from around the world, and it’s our hope that you’ll join SFJAZZ in our
efforts to maintain funding levels for the arts locally and nationally. As our fiscal year
turns its page on July 1, your jazz organization will not receive a single dollar from
Federal sources. We’re grateful for San Francisco’s support and vision for the arts,
but it adds up to just over 1% in SFJAZZ’s coffers for the year. As you can see, we
can’t do it without your support and we are grateful for your help. It sends a message
that the arts remain important in the Bay Area and around the country.
Have you noticed we have a completely new way for you to begin and end your
evenings at SFJAZZ? The new restaurant and lounge at SFJAZZ is named B-Side
and it’s serving delicious bites, meals, and desserts. We hope you’ll settle into one
of the sofas or comfortable chairs, peruse the jazz LP collection, and enjoy the
experience to its fullest. Reservations are available on opentable.com and if B-Side
is fully booked, all of the satellite bars have food for you too. As a special treat
on Wednesday nights in June, members of the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars will
perform at B-Side.
Summer Breezes (George Benson and Al Jarreau style) to you,
Donald W. Derheim
SFJAZZ Chief Executive Officer
P.S. Did you get your SFJAZZ catalog for the 2017–2018 Season featuring concerts
and events from September through May 2018? You can find everything you
need on SFJAZZ.org. Tickets go on sale to SFJAZZ Members June 24!
