Layers & Custom Brushes
Workshop 8 Aims & Outcomes:
• Aims: The project introduces you to some of the native ways of drawing in Photoshop, building confidence without the need for scanned originals.
• You will work in a pixel environment to create motifs suitable for pattern creation.
• You will gain practice in the use of layers and transformations.
• You will explore using selections and brushes to create motifs, then create and store custom brushes from motifs so that you can then paint with them.
• Outcomes: You will have created a number of detailed motifs. From these motifs you will have created custom brushes. These motifs can then be developed into a pattern design.

• Vectors & Bitmaps – the differences:
Each of these brushes has been created in Photoshop to be used in digital art and design work.

Creating Motif Objects in PhotoshopThere are a million different ways of doing this… let’s start with some simple ones
In this task you will use:
Layers – to separate content and preserve
editability.
Selections – to copy objects, and isolate areas for editing.
Brushes – for painting effects.
Transform tools – for changing shape and size of
objects.
Motif & Custom Brush Task:
• Using the tools and techniques explored in this session create the following motifs and custom brushes from the motifs:
• A flower Motif• A fruit Motif• A feather motif• A swirly motif• A bubble motif
• Process:
• Paint each motif design
• Duplicate it and explore making patterns
• Create a custom brush
• Paint and explore brush settings
