Two Categories to ‘Modernize’
Applications• Legacy Applications• 3rd Party Applications
Windows Server Roles• File Shares and DFS• Web Server• Active Directory• DNS• DHCP• Terminal Services• Print Server
Migration and UpgradeMigration
Migrating Physical Instances
32
Windows Server 2012/R2 will not run on 32 bit hardware

Replace Hardware
Virtualize on Hyper-
V
Azure Virtual Machine

*32 bit applications can run on a 64 bit OS as a virtual instance
Migration of Foundational Services
Applications• Legacy Applications• 3rd Party Applications
Windows Server Roles• Active Directory• DNS• DHCP• File Shares and DFS• Print Server• Web Server
Migration and UpgradeMigration
Provides a transition path from: x86 to x64 OS (anything after Windows server 2008 is x64 only)Physical to virtual (and vice versa)Full server to server core (and vice versa)
Clean operating system installsReduces risk and downtime
OS installation and most migration tasks are performed while the source server is still liveAllows migration verification and performance benchmarking prior to bringing the target server “online”Source server remains available for back out scenarios
Why Migration and not Upgrade?
Test Environment
Verify that the source server has sufficient disk space (at least 23 MB)Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is installed on computers that are running Windows Server 2003Windows PowerShell 1.0 or later, is installed on computers that are running Windows Server 2003
Prepare the Migration Tools
Install feature on Windows Server 2012 R2Install-WindowsFeature Migration -ComputerName <TargetName>
Once Installed – Prepare the package for the 2003 servers.
Smigdeploy.exe /package /architecture Amd64 /OS WS03 /Path <TargetPath>
Copy the package to the local 2003 serversExecute SMigDeploy.exe from the 2003 servers
Done!
Prepare Migration tools
PrerequisitesCurrent Domain Functional Level is at least Windows 2003 mode.
Promote a Windows Server 2012 R2 to DC status.
Allow to replicateTransfer FSMO roles
Demote Windows Server 2003 DCRemove Windows Server 2003 from domainSet domain and forest Functional Levels appropriately
Migrating your Active Directory
Easiest part of your migrationActive Directory integrated zone
Introduce a Windows Server 2012 R2 DC with the DNS role installed in your domainAllow to ReplicateUpdate DHCP with new DNS address or Change server address to match old one.Done!
Stand-Alone DNSExport and copy Zone configuration and zone files to target machineImport Zone configuration and zone filesUpdate DHCP with new DNS address or Change server address to match old one.Done!
Migrate your DNS
Migrating DHCPMatch NIC number from source to target servers
Identify which scope are bound to which NICs
Export all settings from the source serverStop the DHCP server firstDe-authorize from Active Directory
Install DHCP service on target serverImport settings in the target server
Start serverAuthorize DHCP server
Retire old DHCP server
Environment Verify that the data locations for the destination server have sufficient free spaceOpen port UDP 7000 & TCP 7000 on destination serverUse the same drive letters for the destination server volumesDo not allow users to access the destination server until migration is fully completed
The DFS NamespacesJoin DFS Namespace and use the replication service to Migrate the dataOnce the replication is complete remove the 2003 server from the namespace
Other Shares and DataUse the Send-SmigServerData Receive-SmigServerData cmdlet from the migration tools and Migrate the shares and data.
Migrating File Shares & DFS
Verify that the new versions of the drivers are availableUse built in tools… don’t re-invent the wheel
Use Server Manager to Install Print Server and management tools on the Windows Server 2012 R2 machineUse the export\import capabilities in the tool.
Once Migrated retire 2003 serverRemove from the domainShutdown and turn off (forever!!! )In DNS add CNAME record to point your source server name to your target server name (you wont need to re-map printers!)

Migration and UpgradeMigration
Benefits of upgradingBy upgrading your application to the latest Microsoft Server platform, you will boost customer value and increase competitiveness
Improve performanceand reliability
Expand capabilities
Deliver flexibly through the cloud
3rd Party Application
ISV Upgrade Program
Email ISVupgrade@Microsoft.com with the name of the 3rd party software that you would like to be compatible with Windows Server 2012 R2
Remember the Steps.Take an inventory of your environment – Discovery PhaseIdentify services to MigratePlan, Plan, Plan…
Take this as an opportunityDo you still need the service? Is this an opportunity to move to the cloud?
