Welcome to Living 60+, your information source for so many things in the community, with a focus on the needs of residents 60 years old and above.
This guide is designed to pro-vide an easy-access list of helpful resources, a great tool you can keep by the phone for quick reference.
Inside you’ll find everything from how to get help with tax preparation, where to get health information to where to go to get more involved in the com-munity.
The NewsLeader wants to give special thanks to City of Burnaby’s Citizen Support Services, Burnaby Seniors Outreach Services Society and in New Westminster the Senior Services Society—three agencies that provide a fantastic range of services in their respective cities.
Besides the directory, there are also several articles to help you live life to the fullest.
We hope you enjoy this maga-zine and find it useful.
Welcome to Living 60+

Seniors are an important and growing part of our commu-nity. To ensure that seniors can continue to live independently in their own homes, the Better at Home Program provides non-medical support to assist with daily tasks.
Funded by the Government of B.C. and managed by the United Way of the Lower Mainland, Better at Home is offered in up to 68 communities in British Columbia.
Citizen Support Services is the lead agency in Burnaby, and in New Westminster the program is offered through Seniors Services Society.
The program offers rides to appointments and light house-keeping provided by home support agencies.
In Burnaby, MOSAIC is also a partner assisting in referrals from non-English speaking seniors.
To qualify for either of the services, you need to be a Burnaby or New Westminster resident, over 65 years of age and living independently with few supports.
Fees for Better at Home services are determined on a sliding scale, based on ability to pay.
For further information about the program please check out the website www.betterathome.ca or in Burnaby call Michele Wilson, coordinator of Burnaby Better at Home at 604-297-4877.
In New Westminster, call 604-520-6621 or email support@seniorsservicessociety.ca.

Age doesn’t have to stop older men and women from enjoying their favor-ite sports. In fact, remaining active can improve physical and mental health.
If a doctor has confirmed that it is okay to participate in sports, these activi-ties can help men and women 50 and older enjoy friendly competition and physical activity.
FishingFishing is more than just a leisurely
day at the lake. Casting and reeling in your catch provides a good workout for the arms, legs and core muscles of the body. If you fish on the water, rowing out to your lucky spot provides additional cardiovascular exercise.
GolfGolf is enjoyed by people of all ages.
Requiring a combination of strategy and skill, golf also pays several physical dividends. Play at your own pace, taking your time walking from hole to hole so you can enjoy the sunshine and soak in the beauty of the course.
SwimmingA few laps around a pool works your
whole body. Swimming is attractive to seniors because it works the muscles and provides a cardiovascular jolt without putting any strain on the joints.
CyclingMany seniors are avid cyclists. You
can ride a bicycle in competition or for pleasure. You can even vary your route depending on how physically intense you want the ride to be.
Seniors need not abandon their love of sport just because Father Time is catch-ing up with them. Many sports can be enjoyed by athletes of all ages.
