SEISMIC U-FLEX HOSES
Sesmc U-Flex hoses are the flexble bronze braded hoses
and can be used wdely n systems gas wth ther resstance
to pressure and flexble structure. They are utlzed for
conductng gas, compensatng the problems orgnated
from nstallaton, absorbng vbratons and expansons.
Wth ther varety of fittng optons produced for almost
every type of connectons, they can be used as a ready-to-
nstall assembly part n every connecton pont.
The U-Flex Hose's design is the only flexible pipe loop that
absorbs and compensates pipe movement in six degrees
of freedom. (three coordinates axes, plus rotation about
those axes simultaneously.) The multiplane movement
design can reduce expansion devices required in a piping
system by up to 50%. It is the safest and most reliable
means of absorbing movement resulting from thermal
changes and random seismic shifts in a piping system.
Simplifies Piping Design
The U-Flex Hoses do not impose pressure thrust on the
piping system. The braid is designed to take the stress of
pressurization containing the core, reducing anchor loads
by 93% compared to mechanical pipe loops and 98% less
than expansion joints. U-Flex Hoses also eliminate pipe
guides required by traditional pipe designs such as
mechanical pipe loops or expansion joints.
Compact Design increases useable space and reduces
system cost
The U-Flex Hoses use 64% less space than a mechanical
pipe loop, and eliminates six welds. Fewer fittings and
welds can be achieved in the piping system by positioning
the U-Flex Hoses at directional changes and rotating one of
the U-Flex elbows during manufacturing to incorporate
directional change, eliminating 90° elbows in the field. It
can also be designed to incorporate elevation changes in
the piping system, saving space, fewer fittings and welds.

Features
MOVEMENT
The U-Flex Hoses are generally used n four types of
applcatons:
Ÿ To correct problems of msalgnment
Ÿ To provde flexblty n manual handlng operatons
Ÿ To compensate for ntermttent or constant movement
Ÿ To absorb vbraton
In all of these types, careful hose selecton, desgn of the
assembly, and nstallaton are mportant for optmal servce lfe.
The flexblty of a hose s determned by ts mechancal desgn
and the nherent flexblty of ts materal.

The U-Flex Hoses flexblty translates nto compactness, requrng a facton of the space of hard ppe loops. Run can be made
smaller, tghter and wth fewer gudess and supports than are requred for hard ppe loops. A sngle Flexble Hose can be
desgned for a large movements, elmnatng multple expanson jont locatons. Compared to bellows type jonts, the U-Flex
Hoses has ncredble flexblty and zero pressure thrust.Ths means a low force to compress, nsgnficant anchor loads, and
mnmal gudng requrements. The flexble hoses combne two tme proven technologes, the hard ppe loop and flexble
bronze hose and brad. Together they sgnficantly reduce the sze, anchor loads, support requrements and costs compared to
a hard ppe loop desgned for the same movement.

RANDOM MOTION
Such moton s non-predctable and may occur from the manual handlng of a hose assembly. Care must be taken to prevent
over bendng of the hose and to avod external abradng of the wre brad.
ANGULAR MOTION
Ths type of moton occurs when one end of a hose assembly s deflected n a smple bend wth the ends not remanng parallel.

OFFSET MOTION
Offset (lateral) moton occurs when one end of the
hose assembly s deflected n a plane perpendcular
to the lon-gtudnal axs wth the ends remanng
parallel.

Note 1: When the offset moton occurs to both sdes
of the hose centerlne, use total travel n
the formula; .e. 2 tmes “T”.
Note 2: The offset dstance “T” for constant flexng
should never exceed 25% of the centerlne
bend radus “R”.
Note 3: If the dfference between “L” and “Lp” s
sgnficant, exercse care at nstallaton
to avod stress on hose and brad at the
maxmum offset dstance.
AXIAL MOTION
Ths type of moton occurs when there s extenson or compresson of the hose along ts longtudnal axs. Ths moton s
restrcted to unbraded corrugated hose only and s lmted to small movements, low pressures such as exhaust gas ventng to
atmosphere. (Bellows Type Expanson Jonts and Expanson Loops are specfically desgned for ths type of movement.

Installaton Instructons
1. DO NOT COMPRESS AXIALLY Metallc hose s lmted to bendng movements, and does not compress n the axal drecton. (For ths applcaton, see our expanson jont and expanson loop catalogs.
2. DO NOT TORQUE A hose may be torqued by:
A) Twstng n Installatons. A unon or floatng flange can be used at one end of the hose assembly to avod twstng. Where flanges are used, the fixed flange end should be bolted nto place before the floatng flange end. Where a threaded npple and a unon are used, the npple end should be threaded nto place, and then the unon tghtened nto place usng two wrenches.
B) Twstng on Flexures. Always nstall the hose so that flexng takes place n one plane only, and n the plane of bendng. The hose should be nstalled such that the flexng occurs n the plane of bendng only.
3. AVOID SHARP BENDS The mnmum centerlne bend radus for ntermttent flexng should never be less than the values specfied.
