Welcome fromthe Headmaster, Sedbergh School
I would like to extend a warm Sedberghian welcome to international students from all over the world seeking a rewarding summer school experience.
Established in 1525, Sedbergh School is a traditional British boarding school that has maintained the best of British boarding school traditions whilst constantly introducing innovative ideas and new ways of teaching. Our unique International Summer School is an excellent example of this. Owned and operated by Sedbergh School’s own staff, it provides a complete British boarding school experience where students learn English from the finest teachers and, outside the classroom, enjoy an impressive range of sports, excursions and exciting activities.
Sedbergh School is one of only eight full boarding schools in the UK. Our past pupils include former England rugby captain Will Carling, Oscar-winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire), the former Lord Chief Justice, Lord Bingham of Cornhill KG, poet William Wordsworth’s sons, geologist Adam Sedgwick, as well as several polar explorers, well-known actors and many successful businessmen and women. One of our past Romanian pupils received a Harvard scholarship and is now working in US Congress.
Sedbergh School is renowned internationally for its academic excellence and the vast majority of our pupils go on to top British Universities. We are also famous for our sporting expertise and the adventurous Sedbergh spirit. Some 34 sports are conducted here and, indeed, the School regularly produces U16 and U18 internationals in hockey, cricket, sailing, rugby and athletics, and boasts an impressive 35 full internationals amongst its Alumni. We also have a strong reputation for music. Pupils receive outstanding tuition in more than 40 instruments, and participate in the School’s 5 choirs, 6 orchestras and bands (including our internationally recognised Brass Band) and numerous ensembles.
The School’s spectacular surroundings make it inspirational for artists and thrilling for the adventurous. Within minutes of the School grounds, pupils have immediate access to numerous outdoor pursuits including hill walking, climbing, abseiling, caving, ghyll scrambling, mountain biking, canoeing, sailing, camping, golf and horse riding.
All of the School’s outstanding facilities are available for use by the International Summer School providing wonderful opportunities for all participants. We very much look forward to welcoming you to Sedbergh next summer!

This exclusive course is designed for boys and girls from 10 -16 years and provides a wonderful opportunity to experience life in a traditional British boarding school. Students live in Boarding Houses with staff and each day is structured to give a true taste of boarding school life. Staff are on hand 24/7 to ensure that students are happy, in a suitable class and reaching their full potential throughout their stay. The welfare of each student is of paramount importance and each Boarding House has a Student Welfare Supervisor resident for the duration of the course who acts in loco parentis and is responsible for the wellbeing of each individual.
The course is small and friendly and the vibrant market town of Sedbergh is a very safe and secure location for an exciting summer. Summer School runs for four weeks and students may elect to do a one, two, three or four week course although, to gain maximum benefit, a minimum stay of two weeks is recommended. With 24 hours of English lessons each week and student numbers restricted to 20% of any one language, opportunities are maximized to improve English language skills very quickly. Class sizes are small (a maximum of 15) and a variety of teaching styles is used, including language workshops in practical subjects such as photography and cooking to ensure that students are engaged and learning effectively.
Younger students gain practical experience using their English skills in the town of Sedbergh and its surrounding villages through age appropriate research activities, while older students can enhance their communication skills through a range of fun activities designed to improve self-confidence and leadership skills.
Students also experience history first-hand during excursions to some of Europe’s oldest cultural centres and enjoy thrilling outdoor activities in beautiful British countryside. Through practical projects, educational trips and an exciting range of extra-curricular activities, students gain valuable skills, make lifelong friends and take away unforgettable memories.
Come to Sedbergh for a Great British Experience!

Our programme provides 24 hours of English tuition each week during which students study grammar, writing, speaking, listening, reading and comprehension. Our teachers are well-qualified and use a wide variety of different teaching methods to provide the best tuition and stimulate understanding. Students undertake a placement test on arrival and are allocated to classes based on ability and age, and each student receives a full academic report at the end of the course. As is typical in boarding schools, teachers monitor students’ progress and can offer individual assistance.
English in the Community (10 to 13 year olds)Sedbergh’s International Summer School provides a unique opportunity for younger students to experience life in rural England. They undertake fun, practical projects in the small, friendly market town of Sedbergh and surrounding villages, where they can practise their new English skills while interviewing business owners, visitors, and local residents. These projects help students to grow in confidence and develop valuable leadership and teamwork skills.
Active Communication (14 to 16 year olds) Older students participate in discussions and fun activities designed to promote effective communication skills and self-confidence. Students are challenged to think quickly, construct and defend a point of view and their ability to express themselves clearly is also enhanced.

Young Leaders
Accommodation and Food
A full programme of exciting social events, games and entertainment is organised each evening, as well as regular age-specific activities. Students have the opportunity to make new friends, relax and have lots of fun at events such as talent nights, drama, quizzes, karaoke, as well as numerous sports including badminton, squash, fives, lacrosse, volleyball and netball. The end of each week is celebrated with a variety show or a fun disco, at which students and staff can let down their hair and compare their dancing techniques!
One afternoon a week, all students participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities designed to develop leadership and enhance team-building skills.
Sedbergh International Summer School is well regarded for its superior level of pastoral care. Students live in Sedbergh School’s comfortable single-sex Boarding Houses together with their Houseparent and experienced staff who are on hand to support students and help them settle in. Boarding is in mixed nationality rooms of 1- 4 beds. Each house has a Student Welfare Supervisor living in the house throughout the course. Houses are well-equipped with social areas providing table tennis, wifi internet access and Sky TV. Students are encouraged to maintain regular contact with their families at home.
The School is proud of its excellent catering staff and dining facilities. A full and varied menu of ‘international style’ food is provided. For lunch and dinner, there is a choice of two hot dishes and a vegetarian option. Students also enjoy barbecues, English roast dinners, pizzas and pasta, and international theme nights. A salad bar is available at lunch and dinner, and fresh fruit is available at every meal. At ‘Chocolate Time’ just before bed-time, students come together in their Boarding Houses over hot chocolate and biscuits for a chat about the day’s events. In addition to being an important social point of the day, this also allows staff to check that each student is well and happy.
