Italy consists of a mountainous peninsula (a.k.a. “the boot) in southern Europe extending into the Mediterranean Sea and includes the islands of Sicily, Sardinia, and about 70 other smaller islands. The Alps form Italy’s border with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia. Most of Italy has warm, dry summers and mild winters, with northern Italy experiencing colder, wetter win-ters. There are some notable active volcanoes, including Vesuvius, near Naples. Italy is a major player when it comes to Western culture and cuisine. Its capital, Rome,
exhibits the architectural and artistic grandeur of ancient civilizations. It is home to the Vatican as well as landmark art and ancient ruins. Other major cities include Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance. It is home to great works of civic and religious architecture, sculpture, and paintings. Venice is well known as the city of canals and Milan is Italy’s fashion capital. Turin, the capital of heavy industry, is home to Fiat — one of the world’s largest car producers. A major attraction for pilgrims and tourists is the “Holy Shroud” in Turin’s cathedral — tradition holds that this was Christ’s burial cloth.

Wednesday, June 21 is National Selfie Day. The younger generations are known for taking selfies, which are defined by Google as “photograph(s) that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media.” For every decent, post-worthy selfie, there are dozens of rejects. Not every selfie shared via social media is a winner. Here’s how to take a good selfie by learning what not to do:Source: boredpanda.com
10. Dogs aren’t always photogenic.
1. Consider placement. Avoid taking selfies with your child where it looks like your dog is pooping on its head.
3. While a selfie generally encompasses a face and shoulders, it’s important to be aware of any other mirrors, especially in bathrooms.
2. A photobomb can ruin any selfie, or make it better depending on your tastes.
5. Always be aware of your surroundings.
7. This is the danger of taking selfies near bathrooms.
4. Make sure the focus is on your face, not other potentially embarrassing objects.
9. This selfie is often called “boyfriend caught me sleeping,” and should serve as a warning to people everywhere.
8. Words often have different meanings when reflected in mirrors.
6. This is called the “my boyfriend caught me getting out of the shower.” If you’re going to try this, watch for other mirrors that might expose you as a liar.

VERA HOGAN
Loving the downtown It has been exciting, as a Fenton resident, to watch as our downtown flourishes. I know there are many people who wish they could go back to the days before Urban Renewal. When I see the old photos, my first reaction, too, is ‘what a shame!’ But, those days are gone and the ‘old downtown’ is not coming back — at least not the way it was. What we have now is beau-tiful, with new restaurants and businesses, and all the flowers and sculptures. Well, some of the sculp-tures anyway. I love the cats sculpture behind Fenton City Hall, but the jury is out on that thing in front of the Post Office. I’m not sure what that is and I am not fond of that color. But as I’m often told, art is ‘subjective,’ and other people probably like it. Anyway, now that summer is upon us, with the Concerts in the Park starting up again and soon the Farmers Markets, the downtown is going to be bustling with residents and visitors. And that’s a good thing for all the shops and restaurants down there. Even without those events, I see more people downtown now than I ever have. What I am really excited about is the new building about to go up at the corner
of N. LeRoy Street and Silver Lake Road — The Horizon Building. The owners are currently seeking tenants or buyers for the first floor and are open to suggestions. So, of course, I will have to share my ideas. First, let’s rule out another pizza place. We have more than enough fine pizza places in Fenton and the surrounding areas. Let’s also rule out a doughnut shop. With CRUST and Tim Hortons within walking distance of The Horizon Building, another bakery-type store is not really necessary. Having said that, a deli/butcher shop would be perfect. One with a variety of lunchmeats and cheeses, with more types than is available at local grocery stores. Put a few tables in there for the lunchtime crowd. We have many fine restaurants downtown, but sometimes people (like me) just want to grab a quick sandwich. For those who just want to pick up some meats, they can do that before heading over to CRUST for a variety of bread choices. What I really, really want though is a good, old-fashioned bar. Not a restaurant with a bar in it, just a bar that serves drinks and maybe a few snacks. And I don’t want a TV in my bar. I want a small comedy club and a little dance floor. Imagine that — no sports, no news of violence going on at home and in the world, no stupid reality shows — just good times with friends and laughter. But, whatever goes in there, I have faith in the people putting the whole project together and know it will be something fabulous. Just sayin’... vhogan@tctimes.com Happy National Martini DaynHistory of the classic cocktail (gin and vermouth) is debated amongst drinkersBy Hannah Ballhball@tctimes.com; 810-433-6792 You might want to save some of your weekend drinking for Monday in honor of National Martini Day on June 19. Coincidentally, one of the most popular places for drinks, The Relief & Resource Co., already has deals on martinis on Mondays, according to head bartender and co-owner Jon Foley.
The word “mar-tini” has a different definition depending on if you ask a bartender or not. “I define that term far more strictly than most people who work in bars,” Foley said. He said a lot of people define a martini as any drink that comes in a martini glass, but it’s actu-ally a specific drink consisting of gin, vermouth, and some type of garnish, usually an olive or lemon zest. The drink is either salty or has a hint of citrus. Foley prefers his with lemon zest. Martinis in movies are often shown in the hand of a gorgeous, wealthy woman drinking a mar-tini in an elegant bathrobe with fake fur. They’re regu-larly consumed at bars and at home. Today, half of all cocktails are served in a martini glass, according to punchbowl.com. The Relief & Resource Co. has a special on tradi-tional martinis for $6 Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. “For two ingredients, that garnish is kind of important. It adds flavor,” he said. They have an industry special on Monday, meaning people who work in the same business get a deal on marti-nis. “They like gin,” he said. Tanqueray is popular at The Relief & Resource Co., which is dry gin. Foley said they’re fond of Botanist, a gin that’s made in Scotland with 22
different botanicals. Foley said the martini was invented sometime in the 1870s or 80s. “There’s debate over when it was exactly invited, but it coincided with when vermouth hit America,” he said. “Traditionally, the French are the ones who make dry vermouth. Italians are known for sweet vermouth.” The first printed recipe for a “Mar-tinez” cocktail was in a bartending manual published in San Francisco in 1887. Although, many believe the
drink was developed on the East Coast. In 1911, Martini di Arma di Taggia, a bartender in New York
City, served drinks that consisted of gin, ver-
mouth, orange bitters and an olive garnish. It gained
popularity among drinkers, partiers, and the high class.
The most expensive martini costs over $60,000. It was cre-
ated in a Scottish distillery. The martini glass, with the thin neck and wide-opening saucer, was invented before the actual drink. Bartenders used the martini glass for many other drinks and was popular during the Prohibi-
tion. “The problem with the history of cocktails is that people who were
deciding the history of cocktails were drinking,” Foley said. Those people never let a lie get in the way of a good story. Cocktail his-tory is about 50 per-cent true story and 50 percent BS.” Some martini-l o v i n g n o t a b l e people and literary icons include John
D. Rockefeller, Humphrey Bogart, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Clark Gable, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, E.B. White, William Churchill, Dor-othy Parker, and James Bond. “I encourage people to try the original gin martini, not only the fruity drinks that come in the glasses. There’s something to be said for the classic cocktail that’s been around for 145 years. It’s still around for a reason,” he said.

HOT LINE CONTINUEDTHE RUSSIA COLLUSION stories are now to be considered fake news perpetuated by CNN, MSNBC, New York Times, and The Washington Post, and by Democratic senators and congressman who all owe our country an apology for wasting our time.
NOW FOR THE good news. A lot of good news has happened over the last few days with Trump proposing a new infrastructure plan to repair bridges, roads
and railways, ways to improve our air traffic control system. He gutted the Dodd Frank bill, which will now improve lending practices.
I VOTED FOR Trump. The reason? I thought anyone who could make billions could keep Washington working more than a day and a half a week. Wrong.
NOW THAT THE witchhunt is over and Trump has been exonerated of everything, maybe the politicians can start focusing on
the economy, jobs, terrorism, immigration and healthcare.
LIBERAL. LEFTIST. ANARCHIST. Atheist socialist, globalist. Communist. It is inter-esting how these words have all morphed into the definition of the Democratic Party.
EATING DOGS VIOLATED whose soci-ety’s norms? I guess you never took a little field trip to southeast Asia.
I’M APPALLED THAT a gentleman would
save a dog’s life, take it to an animal shel-ter then the shelter kills the dog.
POLICE AND FIRE report. Fenton police locate thieves, the suspects were detained over night, interviewed and released. Why would you release somebody after you got all the evidence so they can go out and commit more crimes?
I TALKED TO a Democratic supporter tonight who thought the shooting of the Republican was just fine.

Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) is a unique program to the area. There are millions of community cats killed in shelters because they
are unadoptable. TNR is recognized as the most humane and effective strategy for reducing the community cat population. Anyone caring for a
colony of feral or stray cats may fill out an application to have the cats fixed at a low cost. Go to adoptapetfenton.com/tnr.

JOHN WICKIn this next chapter following the 2014 hit, legendary hitman John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is forced back out of retirement by a former associate plotting to seize

Batman Movie.” But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile take-over, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.PG, 1 hr. 30 min. WORD SCRAMBLE
1. Tough tongue: Cats’ tongues are covered with little structures called “filiform papillae,” which are like tiny hooks pointing toward the throat. These hook-like structures help hold food while a cat is eat-ing. The papillae also help with grooming. Humans can feel these barbs when licked by cats.
2. Seeing spots: Dalmatians are born all white. Their spots will develop within the first few weeks of life and can be black, brown or liver colored.
3. Sleepy time: Cats are born loungers and will spend on aver-age 16 hours of the day snooz-ing. Only sloths spend more time asleep.
4. Send a message: Fish do not have vocal chords, but they can use low-pitched moans, grunts, hisses, and wails to communicate with one another.
5. Watch the eyes: Pet birds can communicate feelings through their pupils. If pupils are dilated, the bird is calm. Pinprick-sized pupils mean birds are agitated and may bite.
13 quirky facts about companion animalsThink you know everything there is to know about your favorite furry, finned or feathered friend? Chances are there are some interesting facts that even the most ardent animal-lover may be surprised to learn.
6. Meeeoooowww: Cats only meow to communicate with humans, not amongst themselves.
7. Seeing colors: Dogs are not color blind as once presumed. They can see colors, just not as vividly as humans.
8. Kindle, not just for reading: A group of kittens is called a “kindle,” while a group of cats is a “clowder.”
9. Almost wild: Dogs are so geneti-cally similar to wolves that they can interbreed.
10. Noseprints: Cats’ and dogs’ noses are unique, just like human finger-prints.
11. Fishy growth rings: Fish do not add new scales as they grow. The scales increase in size and form growth rings that can reveal the age of the fish.
12. Not domesticated: Birds are not domesticated. They’re still rather wild and must be taught accept-able pet behavior.
13. Barkless: Many dogs do not ac-tively bark. One dog that rarely ever barks is the Basenji, due to a nar-row larynx. It can yodel, however!

Whisk together the eggs, granulated sugar, lemon zest and juice and flour and pour over the chilled crust. Bake (at 350 degrees F. again) for 35 – 40 minutes, or until the middle no longer jiggles.
