GOOD NEWS
Genesis r-5:5-12, l7-:r8 I Phili ppians 3:a7-4:t or 3:2o- 41 I Luke 9 : z8 b-36
I think people can be divided into two categories: detail people and vision
people. Some people are both, but many of us lean one way. Some are vision
people, good at seeing the big picture. Others are detail people, focused on
carrying out each small step to make the big picture happen. I am,
undoubtedly, a detail person.
I love a good to-do list (or several), and l'm often consumed with crossing offas many items as possible. lt feels oh so good! My near-obsession with details
and to-do lists came to mind when I read Saint Paul's description of "enemies
of the cross of Christ." He particularly notes, "Their minds are occupied with
earthly things." Oh dear. My lists are nothing but a bunch of earthly things.
They're not all problems, but they can be distractions from God.
On the other hand, today's Gospel story of Jesus'transfiguration is all about
vision. The disciples are given a privileged glimpse into Jesus'glorified body
and the glory of eternal life. What an incredible moment-no wonder Peter
wanted to build tents and remain there. l'm sure the apostles believed they'd
never forget that experience. Yet we know Peter later betrayed Jesus, and the
others abandoned him. They lost sight of the vision in the face of earthly
concerns, which is easy to do.
This Gospel challenges us to keep the vision of eternal life always in front ofus, especially as we navigate the mess and muck and to-do lists of everyday
life. Our earthly concerns are ever before us, but so too should be our hope of
sharing in Jesus'glory. J an el Eske r s u n dayb u lleti n @ li g u o ri. o rg

dc ar PAD Rf,
11 Mv husband has uascular dementi.a and isn't able to make an\d'.examination of conscience. Since part of the anointing oJ tLrc sick
inuolues confasion of sins, witl it ie ualid when he receiues it?
If circumstances permit, the sacrament of anointing ofthe sick may be preceded by the sacrament of penance and
followed by the sacrament of the Eucharist (Catechism ofthr Catholic Church, 1517).
F{owever, when conditions such as your husband's don'tallow this, judgment on the suitability for anointing is tobe made prudently and without scruple (Pastoral Care of tLrc
Srck, 8). For example, anointing is conferred on people
who have lost consciousness or the use of reason if as
Christian believers they would have "at least implicitlyasked for it when they were in control of theirfaculties" (PCS 14). Therefore, because of the degree ofbrain-function loss in this circumstance, the sacrament ofanointing also absolves any sins.
When a habitual desire to die as a faithful Catholic is
implied before a person's illness, the special grace of thesacrament of anointing has this as one of its effects: "the
forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able toobtain it through the sacrament of Penance" (CCC 7532).
