Commander’s Corner
Here we are at the beginning of the New Year, I hope everyone had a good rest and is ready for the upcoming cruising season. With the New Year comes the promise of exciting things to come, and this year is no different. With a spring Boating Class of 18 students and a VHF class of 8 we are making a good start. I would like to personally welcome two new people to our little boating family, Steve Smith, and Gabriele Flint. Steve is a new proctor commandeered from the fall boating class and Gabrielle is our, soon to be, editor in chief of the Scuttlebutt. As some of you may know and others may not, our current editor Joni Miles is retiring from the position. Her shoes will not be easily filled and she will be missed. We are looking forward to a great cruising season with new cruises and some fun boating activities. The responsibilities for the cruises are being split up amongst a committee this year. The new committee is aptly named “Cruise Control” and is made up of your Cruise Master Leon Brown, Assistant Cruise Master Darcy O’Shea, Bill Grout, Werner Knittel, Laurie Kaerne, and yours truly. Anyone with suggestions for cruises, or just fun things to do in, on, or with boats is encouraged to contact us. We are looking at putting on an Admirals’ course for women in the spring. The course will consist of boat handling, man overboard techniques, docking, emergencies, anchoring, etc. It will be an all-‐day on the water course. Registration will be limited to 10 students. We are also looking for people interested in joining our bridge, there are several positions open. If you ever thought you might like a say in what your squadron does, now is the perfect time to join the bridge. No experience necessary, enthusiasm is a definite asset. We`ve had some issues with our emailing list as it was not up to date so some of you didn’t receive any communications from us. That has now been fixed and everyone should be getting the squadron mailings, my apologies to all. I look forward to a great and fun year and hope to see or hear from you all soon. Keep an even keel and carry on. Rob Anderson Commander

…….was well attended to hear Walsh and Edi Galen during the first part of the evening. They gave an excellent presentation of their slow, thorough exploration of the globe, in their 49 foot Hunter and their rounding of the Horn from Chile to Brazil. During the second part of the evening, John Mortimer, Burnaby proctor, spoke of his participation as navigator on one of the racing boats in the Vic Maui Yacht race in June. It was a wonderful evening hearing about these adventures on the sea. Thank you to Darlene Wood who provided the refreshments.
BURNABY CHRISTMAS BUREAU Greetings and Happy New Year!
On December 19th 2012, Burnaby Squadron Volunteers helped out at the Burnaby Christmas Bureau for the 8th consecutive year. We enjoyed the eager and willing assistance of a total of 21 volunteers, in 2 shifts, in the 'Toy Distribution Room'. We helped select and fill bags with presents and other items for Burnaby children. Many thanks to our ever- ready ranks of Volunteers!!! Kudos also to the people from the Burnaby Christmas Bureau, who put in a Herculean effort at this time every year! ..

BE A GREEN BOATER (from the BC Marine Trades Association)
As boaters, we should all be committed to environmental stewardship and as such, there is a lot boaters can do to contribute to the preservation of BC's coastline.
1. Manage all sewage responsibly by using pump-‐out services where possible and/or dumping sewage in deep open water, away from anchorages, sensitive areas, shellfish beds and swimmers.
2. Reduce greywater discharge (from sinks and showers). 3. Take care when fuelling by using oil absorbent rags and other devices to make sure no fuel goes in the
water. 4. Use bilge filters or bilge pads to absorb oil and fuel so none gets pumped
overboard accidentally. 5. Maintain the boat using environmentally responsible products or
alternatives. 6. Use hard bottom paint (non-‐sloughing), or eco-‐friendly alternatives. 7. Dispose of all wastes properly. 8. Haul out at responsible boat yards with containment policies and equipment
so sandings and scrapings don’t end up in the water. 9. Support marinas with responsible environmental policies and practices.
Let’s preserve our natural resource so generations to come can enjoy the same experiences we share.
Our Halloween Social was a hoot of an event. Our host, Port Moody Squadron did a stupendous job of making this a fantastic party. Not everyone was in costume
but many did get into the spirit. Jen’s favorite was Dr. Feel Good and his free mammogram machine. You will have to ask her about the results. The Jamaican bobsled team was also a big hit. I was hoping Burnaby Squadron would rise up from the dead but unfortunately we had a small presence. For those who did attend we had a good time and were much appreciative of the
festivities.
