Across all our clients’ industries, we see a growing volatility, uncertainty and
complexity. These changes shape where we are today in China. They also
require a strong sense of awareness of what happens around us, and a pro-
active attitude to deal with these constant changes. In such a dynamic business
environment more traditional management styles like “plan and control” do not
work anymore. Something else is needed to have impact. Our 2016 Talent and
Learning Guide will provide you with insights into our approach and services to
make a difference for yourself, your team and your organization.
Traditionally, behavior has been the starting point for creating a change. We
experienced that a different approach is needed to create real transformations:
One that is value-based and integrates your strengths, values and ambitions. To
realize transformations, we focus a lot less on ‘thinking’ and more on ‘doing’. By
focusing on ‘doing’ we invite our learners to stretch themselves, experiencing
what kind of new behavior works for them. This also means to learn from
mistakes and be courageous! This is exactly where ‘being’ comes into play and
where people can fundamentally change. Based on what works for you in your
specific context, this is the final step to grow.
The impact of our approach and unique learning solutions? We improve
business results, innovation and organizational happiness.
We are very much looking forward to working with you, and to create an
exciting learning journey and long-lasting transformation!

Sometimes in life you are lucky as to meet someone who can
fundamentally help you grow. Enabling you to take the next
step in your professional and personal life. I was that lucky
fifteen years ago, when I joined a strategy consultancy firm
in the Netherlands. My manager, who also was one of the
partners of the firm, had a revolutionary view on management.

Ask good questions; help people to find their own
solutions.
Believe in everybody’s potential; everybody is creative,
resourceful and whole.
Create focus (through questions, not directives) to create a
mutual agreement of the priorities of development.
Ensure the feedback information is heard and understood
by the employee. Asking clarifying questions is the best
way to do this.
Dance in the moment; be in the here and now.
My manager did not tell me what to do, but instead asked
me a lot of questions to help me create my own solutions.
Further, he was always interested in me as a person and in my
development, which gave me a lot of trust and confidence.
Looking back at these conversations and my current Co-
Active Coaching experience, I would highlight the following
principles as being big stimulants for the critical thinking that
makes coaches out of business leaders and managers:
TALENT & LEARNING GUIDE | 27
The experience we gained with helping many managers and business leaders of global organizations to
become better coaches clearly shows that I am not the only one who benefits from a coaching style
leader. In fact, we regularly see that leaders and managers who coach effectively frequently improve their
business results by over 20 percent.
Your employees, business, professional career and personal happiness will all benefit if you begin to
operate in a “Manager-as-Coach” mindset. Good luck with your journey to become a coach!
Leaders today must balance a complex mindset that matches the complexity
of their business realities. Developing leaders at this pace of change is not
easy. To make leadership into a competitive advantage, organizations must
begin to see the effectiveness of their current leadership as strategically
central to its future. Not an HR-or staff-driven effort, this is a strategic
imperative, the job of the executive suite.
In partnership with the Leadership Circle, Schouten China now certifies
coaches and trainers to use the Leadership Circle development framework
and supports them to take their conversations with senior leaders to a
deeper level. In this certification program you will gain in-depth knowledge
about the theoretical models and stage of development framework that
the Leadership Circle Profile is built upon. There are many leadership and
personal development frameworks integrated into this powerful assessment,
and the more you know how to use them, the more you are able to help
your clients be more effective. This training has been developed specifically
for internal and external practitioners who want to enhance the leadership
effectiveness of the individual and collective leadership within their clients or
their own organization.
28 | TALENT & LEARNING GUIDE
The certification program:
01 | Supports you in working as deeply as the client is capable of
going, and enabling you to take executive coaching and leadership
development to a new level.
02 | Provides you with practical experience in debriefing the Profile with
clients.
03 | Helps you understand the solid theoretical and statistical foundation
upon which the Profile stands and helps you know how to answer
questions that clients raise about the validity of the tool.
04 | Gives you implementation templates for supporting the ongoing
learning and follow-through of your clients.
05 | Trains you in the use of the web-based the Leadership Culture
Survey.
06 | Introduces you into a community of practice that will support you
in having a greater impact through your work with leaders.
07 | Increases time-efficiency, allowing client and coach to “meet in the
moment” without spending valuable time finding out how they came.
08 | Seasoned consultants and coaches consistently report that the
Leadership Circle enables them to have the most productive sessions
of their careers. They agree that the Leadership Circle is the most
powerful 360 development tool for leadership, and the easiest to use
and understand.

The Training for Trainers (TFT) program is a personal
learning journey. It has a strong, science based, didactic
foundation. All our trainers are experienced soft skill
trainers from our head office in The Netherlands.
Soft skill trainers help others to reach their full potential.
We believe everybody has potential. It is the job of a
professional trainer to help others unleash that potential
so learners become better in their current jobs and are
prepared for future challenges.
During the Soft Skills Trainer International Certification
Program participants acquire the necessary knowledge
and skills to develop the soft skills of staff members and
support their clients to become a learning organization.
Participants of the program are (senior) HR managers,
business line managers and professionals with the
ambition to train professionals in behavior- and
communication training. They are fully aware that
conducting a good training is so much more than giving
a presentation!
After completing this training course and passing your
exam, you will be granted our Soft Skills Trainer Certificate
which is globally recognized and valued.
BECOME A SOFT SKILL TRAINER
TALENT & LEARNING GUIDE | 31
Key characteristics of a soft skill trainer:
All modules follow an ‘action learning approach’. This means that you will learn together with the other
participants by tackling real issues and reflecting on your actions. You will acquire knowledge through actual
actions and practice rather than through traditional instruction. Our trainers enable participants to review the
actions they have taken and identify learning points. Consequently, this will guide future actions and improve
performance.
Action learning approach
02 | Continue building on
people’s strengths, values
and ambitions; compass
model.
01 | See people from the
whole.
03 | Get people outside their
comfort zone.
05 | Learning by doing; action
based approach.
04 | Stretch learning and
experiment with new
behavior.
06 | Align learning interventions
before, during and after
the trainings.
32 | TALENT & LEARNING GUIDE
A great diversity of learning methods and activities
characterizes our approach to learning. We combine short
theoretical introductions with many exercises. We strongly
focus on bringing your learnings into your daily practice.
Next to this, we offer support by means of our digital
learning environment on the internet. Altogether, you will be
assured of the maximized effectiveness of our programme!
Setting your personal goals
The training starts with a personal goal-setting interview,
just you and your trainer. During this interview, mutual
expectations and principles are brought in line, while you
can ascertain yourself that the TFT program sufficiently
meets your requirements and expectations. During the
interview, your trainer will assess how any lack of knowledge
and/or experience can be filled prior to or during the
program. If you jointly agree on the conditions, your
participation in the TFT program is a fact and you have a
personal goal-setting plan ready to start your training.
Intervision, peer coaching & coaching from trainers
In between series of training sessions, you will get together with your
co-participants at least 5 times to discuss your personal development in the
profession of trainer. You will provide coaching to each other and support each
others’ learning process. Writing a report of the intervision meetings is part of the
examination requirements.
Being part of the Schouten China community
To get the best result out of the training programme, it is essential to remain ‘up to
date’ even when the training is finished. Therefore, Schouten China offers support
by:
Facilitating alumni meetings.
Offering follow-up trainings and workshops for trainers when possible.
Offering continued intervision after completion of the training.

THE KEYSTONE MODEL
The keystone model gives an overview of essential leadership skills that drive business results. Depending on the vision of your organization and the context in which it is operating, a specific set of keystones will be relevant for you.
An established company going through a major change process in a globalizing market will need to focus on different keystones than a young emerging business striving to grow ten times its size within the next five years.
The keystone model is based on four quadrants and a connecting circle. The quadrants relate to business maturity and different roles in the organization. The circle represents those skills that are essential for successful interaction.
You choose the course duration that best fits your need: 1/2 day, 1day or 2 days.

TALENT & LEARNING GUIDE | 49
As managers move up the corporate ladder, there is a constant need to upgrade
the tools in their tool-box. Often, they are not only expected to manage the day-to-
day operations of their team, but also need to put emphasis on team development,
leading teams to perform better, embodying the organization’s culture and
demonstrating business results along the way. Indeed, this is a daunting task for
managers expected to be future leaders within their organizations.
At the end of this
program, learners
will be able to:
Develop high potential talents or managers to reach the next
level of leadership
Help future leaders navigate through complex changes
happening around or within their teams
Unleash the inner potential of future leaders
Enable high potential managers lead their teams with greater

LEADERSHIP / MANAGEMENT TEAM PROGRAM
TALENT & LEARNING GUIDE | 51
The leadership or management team of any organization are tasked with setting its
strategy, direction and culture. Questions that often arises in this space are: How well
do we perform as a leadership team? What skills to we need to lead the organization to
the next level? How can we embody the organization’s culture and lead our team into
the right direction? Similar to the HiPo Manager Development Program, the modules
in the Leadership / Management Team Program are customized to meet particular
learning objectives. On top of that, we also introduce the Leadership Circle Profile and
the Leadership Culture Survey. These frameworks assess the effectiveness of a leader
as well as the effectiveness of the dynamics and culture that they create as a collective.
At the end of
this program,
learners will be
able to:
Determine the effectiveness of their collective leadership
Establish a compelling rationale for change
Correlate leadership to productivity and business results
Enable other leaders to navigate through the complexities of
changes happening in their organization

SENIOR LEADER PROGRAM
TALENT & LEARNING GUIDE | 53
At a senior level, leaders often say – We had a great track record in business results, but
now we are stuck. What’s next in the highly volatile and uncertain market environment
we work in? The old ways of working harder and faster may have served us well
before and as we move ahead, we need to evolve to a next level of awareness. In
the Senior Leader Program, Schouten China supports leaders in acknowledging their
reactive behaviors so they can evolve to their creative selves. We do this by utilizing
the Leadership Circle Profile. The Leadership Circle Profile is designed to take senior
leadership to the creative level by bringing senior executives together and crystalizing
on the team’s strengths, values and ambitions. The length of a program can be tailored
to meet your needs depending on the modules you choose. It could be a half-day
workshop, a medium-length 2-3 day seminar, or a 18 month development journey.
At the end of
this program,
learners will
be able to:
Enable leaders to recognize their reactive tendencies and
unleash their creative competencies
Upgrade leaders’ inner operating systems
Establish a compelling rationale for change
Correlate leadership to productivity and business results
Create truly authentic and creative business leaders

CULTURE / VALUE BASED PROGRAM
TALENT & LEARNING GUIDE | 55
More and more leaders are asking – how can we enhance our corporate culture and
values? By asking these questions, leaders acknowledge the importance of corporate
culture. Each Culture / Value-Based Program is tailor-made – not one program looks
the same. The reason is simple – no two organizations have the same set of values.
However, there is a trend in the methodology of instilling corporate cultures. We first
break the mold by acknowledging the way we used to work and understanding the
need to change. Next, we dig for gold by diving deep into each value or culture. When
the values start to take shape in the behaviors of individuals, we create synergy by
incorporating all the values in our daily work and create a strong link with the vision.
At the end of
this program,
learners will be
able to:
Determine the effectiveness of collective leadership
Establish a compelling reason to enhance an organization’s
collective culture
Inculcate a set of organization values that truly bring about
positive impact
Align personal beliefs and values with that of the organization’s

The Leadership Culture Survey
Get an “MRI” of Your Leadership Culture
The Leadership Culture Survey provides
a powerful “MRI” of your leadership
culture. Used for your entire organization
or only one leadership team; our survey
reveals valuable data. It tells you how
your people view their current leadership
culture and compares that reality to the
optimal culture they desire.
The “gap” between the current culture
and desired culture, instantly reveals
key opportunities for leadership
development. The Leadership Culture
Survey also measures how your
leadership culture compares to that of
other organizations.
Build Readiness for Change at all Levels
The Leadership Culture Survey works seamlessly with the Leadership Circle Profile. It uses
the same integrated framework that makes the Leadership Circle Profile powerful and
effective. While the Leadership Circle Profile provides in-depth feedback for individual
leadership development, the Leadership Culture Survey builds readiness for change at the
team and organizational levels. It helps you map a course to the kind of leadership culture
that will bring success to your teams and organization.
In short, a Leadership
Culture Survey will:
Establish a compelling rationale for change
Focus on leadership development efforts
Delineate cultural challenges associated with acquisitions,
mergers and restructuring plans
Correlate leadership to productivity, profits, turnover, and
other bottom line metrics

Results driven group development
Often a group of employees needs development in a particular subject area.
For this purpose we developed a team coaching program that focuses on
specific business-issues at hand, while also being tailored to individuals. The
program starts with a joint kick-off, followed by personal coaching sessions
for all team members. In consultation with you, we compose a dedicated
pool of coaches for the project. The approach of a team as a ‘whole’ and
the individuals within it, is a powerful method to quickly bring a group of
employees or supervisors to a desired level.
Team Coaching
60 | TALENT & LEARNING GUIDE
Teams are the force that drive organizations. High performing
teams get more done in less time, and give members a sense
of belonging and connection. That is our objective. With this
in mind, our company supported Team Brunel during the 2014
and 2015 Volvo Ocean Race. We have played an important
role in selecting the crew. We assessed how compatible
they were and coached the whole crew to collaborate more
efficiently as a team.
As a manager, your job compares to managing a race of this
calibre. There will be challenges: Resistance within your teams,
uncertainty and sometimes conflicts. Team coaching will help
you to deal with these aspects and more. It will help you to
bring your team to the next level. And you? You will be a more
valuable leader in your organization and consequently happier
in this role.
So what is team coaching all about?
Team coaching helps people understand how to work better
with others. It’s an effective method for showing teams how
to reduce conflict and improve their working relationships.
Only then can the team focus on its real work, and achieve its
objectives.

SOLUTION
The senior management would like to bring the level of trust within the company to a higher level and ensure that the
patient’s interests are central to every action made.
Value-Based Program
Schouten China designed a 6 month value-based program with the objectives of internalizing
six values related to trust. The program explored the personal values of the participants and linked them to the
company’s values. Co-facilitating with the directors of the company,
we combined ‘experiential’ learning with action-based learning. Participants completed “missions” during the course.
They shared their personal learning throughout their learning journey via social media. Participants: Middle Level
Managers.
