About the Host Chapter Welcome!
New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMT)The NMT student chapter aims at providing our student members with opportunities to develop themselves professionally. Our members are always encouraged to join networking events, professional workshops, volunteer around campus, and outreach to our community. Despite our predominantly hispanic student body we take pride in welcoming members from all groups like one big familia. Like a familia we always want our members to develop so we often have younger members take lead roles as officers and event coordinators. As a result, we have grown substantially and have become one of the most active professional student chapters on campus and the community.
University of New Mexico (UNM)HESO (Hispanic Engineering and Science Organization) is a combined student chapter of two national professional organizations since the early 1980s, Latinos in Science and Engineering (formerly Society of Mexican American Engineers & Scientists – MAES), and Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Membership in our organization translates to being a student member of both MAES and SHPE, HESO has dedicated itself to promote excellence in engineering, science and mathematics at the University of New Mexico. Since 1975, we provide our members with opportunities to interact and network with companies and to attend various conferences that will benefit their future endeavors, in and out of college. In addition, we provide resources and information regarding job opportunities, scholarships, mentoring, and community service.
Bienvenidos a RLDC 3 2020! Hope you guys enjoyed your journey to the Land of Enchantment. REGION 3 1110 RLDC 2020
Innovation Challenge
Water Scarcity is a major challenge for many states in the southwestern United States. It is a specifically delicate issue in the state of New Mexico. New Mexico receives, on average, less than 10 inches of rain annually. Due to frequent drought and water shortage, water in New Mexico often travels long distances to serve its population of 2,085,538 residents. As only a fraction of New Mexico’s water is supplied by surface sources, such as the Rio Grande and Santa Fe River, much of the state sources its water from underground wells and aquifers.
Poor water quality in New Mexico, mainly as a result of scarcity and over-treatment, may cause a variety of health problems.
Different areas in New Mexico can experience a variety of different water issues. Even in the same city, problems can vary widely.
Smaller and underserved communities tend to be the most affected by these issues. Most of these communities rely on underground water supply but cannot afford the appropriate water treatment equipment.
We challenge you to design a system that solves this problem.
Design a system that can be implemented in a community and is able to filter water to standards set by the EPA.
This challenge will consist of two parts:
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28TH 8:10 AM - 12 PM NEW MEXICO SOUTH G&H
MARINES.COM/SHPE-WRR
PART 1: Two hours of design where a team will come up with a model and specifications for their solution. Each team is to provide a CAD model of their artifact and a design-to-implementation plan for the device or system.
PART 2: These last two hours will be split into two.
First hour will be dedicated to creating a pitch to the judges and a marketing plan for the proposed solution.
Second hour will be presentations to the judges and a small awards ceremony will take place.

SUPPORT OUR SCHOLARS!Financial need is the #1 reason why Hispanic students do not persist through
graduation. 1,300 SHPE student members applied for a scholarship last year, but due to a lack of funding, only 155 were awarded. You can help close that gap.
Join us today in raising $500,000 to provide 250 new scholarships for SHPE students. Even a small donation can make a big difference in the life of a student.

As the first person in my family to go to college, I am especially honored to be part of this select
group of individuals.
The scholarship has served as a generous
reminder to put my best foot forward as a
student and as a leader.
This scholarship has gotten me one step closer
to being the first out of 11 grandchildren to graduate from college.
