combination of whimsy andnostalgia drives Cesar Sanrandero creare his new photorealist
paintings that are focused on rwo distinctseries: one thar deals with old BetryBoop souvenirs found in shops aroundNew York and anorher based on richlyillusrrared anrique dn boxes from hishome in London.
"I like rvorking in a series because itallows me to explore a sub.iecr much morefully rhan a single painring does," says
Santander. "I discovered old tin boxes inantique stores while looking for unusualchina cups, which were an early subjecrof mine. Old objects with brighr colors, scratches, unusua.l prindng and rusr areinteresring ro paint."
The Bern. Boop paintings startedmore than 20 ,vears ago rvhen Santanderfirst srarted doing paintings of vintage
illusrrarion and the wear and tear patternon the surface. The more scratchesand marlis, the better. I find boxes atflea markets, antique shops and on theinrernet."
Santander finds that these rwodistinct series involve objects he can claimand make uniquely his own. Both objectsallow him ro creare a cerrain look and srylethat is completely original in the genre ofphotorealism.
"Coliectors like rhe fact that I am theonly painter doing many of these subjeos,"says Santander. "The photographic technique, rhe bright colors and rhe level of detail are also
very seductive ro t}re collecors. lVith these
new painrings, I have also tried ro infi.rse themwith a greater originality and a more powerfiriscale. There's humor in rhe Betty Boops andelegance in the dn boxes."
