Happy Holidays Best in
the West! At the close of
another year, the Parent
and Community Engage-
ment team gratefully
pause to wish you a warm
and happy holiday season.
At a time when most of us
are thinking of that perfect
present to give (or receive)
we offer this newsletter as
our gift to you. Knowing
full well how very busy
that you are, it is our hope
that this will save you the
most valuable resource of
all…time.
We also hope to help
you build the capacity
at your school sites by
having everything in
one place. Finally, we
wanted to thank you,
share some of the work
that we have been do-
ing and let you know
that we are simply a
phone call away.
Well…. no…..not Santa’s workshop. However, here are
tools to assist you with the four required parent work-
shops in which two topics (School Report Card and A-G)
are mandated and two are principal selected. Remember that although only two of
the topics are mandated, four workshops are required. Let us know if you need any
assistance.

While writing your Single Plan for Student Achievement
remember:
“Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is
a progress, but working together is a success”, thus
let’s:
Collaborate to ensure our SPSA is approved at all in-
stances.
Welcome recommendations from the ELAC to ensure
goals for EL students are met.
Engage in conversations with all stakeholders to plan
and develop strategies to increase student achievement.
Let’s ensure our English Learners overcome language
barriers to have equal access to curriculum.
UNDER CONSTRUCTION Here are some professional development workshops that
Santa’s Elves are working on to provide to your schools:
JANUARY to MAY 2016
EL Parent Educator Coaches are available to present
the NEW ELD STANDARDS training for parents of
English Language Learners. As you know, the NEW
ELD STANDARDS have been designed to address the
dual challenge faced by EL students as they learn both,
language and content. Let us contribute to your success
and help you comply at the same time. The main goal is
to increase and improve parent’s understanding of the
ELD STANDARDS.
This training can count as one of
the four required parent workshops.
English Learner Master Plan training for parents – EL
parents will learn about the process of identifying Eng-
lish Learners and the instructional programs available
to them so they can better support their children’s edu-
cational and academic goals.
English Language Learners
With your invaluable help we successfully completed
some of our accountabilities:
Formed the School’s ELAC Committee
Trained SSC & ELAC officers
ELAC Convening to establish the DELAC
Provided support to the ELAC in addressing the
subject of Importance of Attendance. This
Committee reviews ways in which schools and
parents can support and improve attendance.
We could not have done it without our wonder-
ful Designees & Coordinators!
From now to the end of December we are in the pro-
cess of completing COMPREHENSIVE NEEDS
ASSESSMENT & SINGLE PLAN FOR STUDENTS
ACHIEVEMENT (SPSA).
Comprehensive Needs Assessment (Due
December 31, 2015) – Engages parents in ana-
lyzing various data sources in reviewing and eval-
uating the SPSA and to determine if the instruc-
tional programs are , in fact, effective.
Single Plan for Student Achievement (Due
January 29, 2015) – Parents engage in crucial
conversations to plan and develop goals and
strategies to increase school wide student
achievement, but specifically English Learners
academic success. Furthermore, conversations
evolve around building parent capacity and part-
nership to support the academic goals.

School life as we very well know, can
some times go awfully slow. But if we
work in concert, it will all be worth an
effort! Everyone knows the school has
a heart, but not enough realize the
Principal’s part. So in order to spread
the news, we offer these courses you
can certainly use:
Abriendo Puertas / Opening Doors
a 10 session training for parents
where parents learn how to prepare
their children to succeed in school.
Parents’ research, analyze, and learn
ideas on how to support their child’s
healthy development. Parents are
given resources available in their com-
munity and interact with other par-
ents in their community. This train-
ing was recently completed at two
schools and it was met with excellent
reviews.
Modified Consent Decree (MCD)
Parent Trainings – A two series
training covering multiple topics for
parents who are new to the IEP process.
The importance of their involvement at
school is emphasized. Topics covered
include:
The IEP and You
Parents as Leaders
It’s All About Behavior
Eliminating Hostile Environments
Supporting Your Child at Home and School
Bullying: What Every Parent
Should Know – Workshop parents
increase awareness of the LAUSD
anti-bullying policy, and different
types of bullying, identification of
warning signs of bullying, legal obliga-
tions regarding to students with and
without disabilities. Strategies &
resources for preventing and respond-
ing to bullying are presented.
If something strikes your fancy and
the above helps meet your goal, please
give a call to Marisol.

well as input regarding the District’s Title 1 policy. Topics that have been discussed have included information on federal
mandates under Title 1 and the CORE Waiver. All sessions have taken place at Daniel Webster Middle School’s Daniel’s
Den. This work could not be completed without the invaluable input of our Local District West parents!
Thank you to the following schools who have had parents attend our sessions.

On behalf of the Local District West Parent and Community Engagement Unit, I would like to say thank you to the

Help Wanted! Volunteers As we know, volunteers are a special part of our school communities. They wear multiple hats and often
fill in much needed gaps at our under resourced schools. We value volunteers and the essential role that
they play on our campuses. Included on page 6 are links that will take you directly to resources that will
assist you with properly processing your volunteers.
