Dear Friend:Welcome to beautiful San Salvador, often called the Land of Dis-covery since it was the first landfall of Christopher Columbus on this side of the world during his historic voyage in 1492.In fact, Co-lumbus met the Arawak people here. They had long before discov-ered the splendor of this island. Although San Salvador is the first point of contact between Europe and the Americas, it has gone un-spoiled for more than five centuries.Since the days of the Arawaks and the Columbus-era Europeans, visitors have been frequenting San Salvador to soak up its natural treasures. Pristine beaches stretch for miles and miles, only giving way to pockets of surf that is a special treat for the adventurous. Meanwhile, warm sun rays flood the shores of San Salvador to allow you to enjoy sunbathing, touring or relaxed sightseeing. We are so pleased to share these at-tributes of San Salvador with you, and we hope they will whet your appetite to return for more in the near future.

ACTIVITIES (Activités)San Salvador may be a small island, but the opportunities for travelers to relax, explore, and take it all are disproportionately large. Miles of beaches offer seclusion and snorkel-ing sites. Reefs and wrecks provide rewarding diving sites. And the flats circling the island offer hours, if not days, of game-fishing action. Visitors are also welcome to tour the old plantation ruins, explore historical Lucayan Indian sites, and climb up the old kerosene-operated lighthouse.
ATTRACTIONS (Attrait)New World MuseumHoused in a 1910 building this museum has displays of Lucayan pottery, artifacts from an Original Arawak settlement, paintings depicting Columbus’ landfall and an exhibit of his life.
Bahamian Field StationThe Bahamian Field Station, occupying an old U.S. Navy base, has been operating for many years as a centre for academic research in the areas of Archaeology, Biology, Geology, and Marine Sciences. It provides accommoda-tions and air transportation arrangements for professors who wish to teach their students in this unique environment.
Watling’s Castle/Sandy Point EstateRuins of a late 18th century Loyalist planta-tion house was named after George Watling, a buccaneer who frequented the place. The substantial ruins at Sandy Point, including the three-storey “Great House”, kitchen, slave quarters, barns and boundary walls, were studied by the Bahamian Field Station. The Lookout Tower, which overlooks French Bay, has been restored. It sites 85 feet above sea level.
Dixon Hill Lighthouse (on cover)Built in 1887 on a former plantation owned
by John Dixon, this 400,000 candle powered lighthouse has a visibility of 19 miles. Standing 163 feet above sea level, it maintains four-hour watches nightly, giving a double flash every 10 seconds. This kerosene lit, hand-operated lighthouse is the last of its type in the Islands of The Bahamas.
Pigeon Creek SiteThis site is an area where archeological excavations have shown that the indigenous people of The Bahamas, the Lucayan/Taino Amerindians, all had villages.
Cut CayThis island was mentioned by Columbus in his journal as a good site for a fortress. At low tide, one can wade out to the cay which is located across a shallow channel off North Point.
MONUMENTSThe Landfall ParkThe Landfall Park (at the Long Bay Site), a ten-acre site rich in archaeological artifacts, is the first landfall of Christopher Columbus in the “New World”. On October 12, 1492, after 33 days at sea, Columbus landed probably at beautiful Fernandez Bay (Long Bay). A simple white cross, erected in 1956 by Mrs. Ruth D. Wolper, commemorates the historic event. Also on this site is the Mexican Monument which housed the Olympic flame in 1968 on its journey from Greece to Mexico City.
UNESCO MonumentOn August 12, 1991 the Director-General of UNESCO, in the presence of the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of the Ba-hamas, declared San Salvador a “Monument of the Quincentennial”, acknowledging it as the geographical starting point of the “new American epoch” commencing October 12, 1492.
Chicago Herald MonumentThe 1892 World’s Fair, held in Chicago, celebrated the 400th Anniversary of the “discovery” of the “New World”. In 1891, the Chicago Herald, an American newspa-per, erected this sphere (hewn from native limestone) in commemoration of Colum-bus’ landfall (but on the wrong site).
Nao Santa Maria MonumentA commemorative monument by the Nao Santa Maria—a Japanese effort to recreate Columbus’ Flagship, symbolizing Columbus’ original intention to reach Japan and pro-mote harmony among nations.
BEACHES & PARKS The beaches of San Salvador are secluded and expansive. They include: Bonefish Bay, at Club Med, known for its abundant bonefish Long Bay, at the Columbus Monument site Grotto Beach, at Sandy Point, which has a little grotto Snow Bay, near the entrance to Pigeon Creek, where the sand is fine like snow Dim Bay Beach, near the original Columbus Monument (now Chicago Herald Monument) East Beach, a three mile beach near United States, where there is good snorkeling right off the beach North Victoria Hill, a two-mile beach with nice clear water, located three miles north of Club Med.

San Salvador, one of the easternmost islands of The Bahamas
archipelago, is the exposed peak of a submerged mountain
that reaches 15,000 feet to the ocean floor. The island is 12
miles long and 5 miles wide.
Christopher Columbus is said to have made his first landfall
on San Salvador during his historic voyage to the New World.
Four separate monuments mark the exact spot where he came
ashore on the 12th October, 1492. However, it is generally held
that he landed at Long Bay, where a big stone cross now stands.
Called Guanahani by the native Lycayan Indians, Columbus
renamed the island San Salvador or “Holy Saviour”, noticing in
his journal: “The beauty of these islands surpasses that of any
other and as much as the day surpasses the night in splendour.”
The islands was taken over by the British bucanner, George
Watling, and he renamed San Salvador Island after himself, call-
ing it Watling Island. It was not until 1925 that the island’s name
is restored.
The island has miles of pristine and secluded beaches, and
an emerald -blue sea of such sparkling clarity that divers have
visibility of up to 150feet. Challenging reefs and wreck diving ca
be enjoyed at High Cay, Low Cay and Middle Cay. Sparkling
lakes cover the interior of the island and relics of Loyalist days
abound.
The pace of life here has changed little over the centuries and
today San Salvador is still the ultimate escape.
