A Message From the President
Brad Cushman RDHSDCDHS President
Hello everyone and welcome to the next exciting year for SDCDHS. There has been a lot of change this year, both groundbreaking and unexpected. I feel these changes give California, and our San Diego component, the chance to grow in new and innovative ways. It is important we stick together during these growing pains, so that we can all reap the benefits of our bright tomorrow.
Enclosed you will find a special letter from CDHA, delivered by our fantastic trustee Heidi Coogan, who has worked tirelessly this past year to help all of us with our transition away from ADHA. We have also included the application to join the new CDHA, which I hope all of you will consider if you have not joined already.
We kick our CE year off with a bang, bringing in CDHA President Elect Lori Laughter to speak! We also plan to host a few social gathers as we did last
year, so keep your eyes on the eBulletins for updates. This year also marks the first collaboration CE between SDCDHS and SDCDS, joining the hygienist group and dentist group together for our January Infection Control and Dental Practice Act course. This course will be held at a new location for both groups on Miramar Marine Corps base, very exciting stuff.

The California Dental Hygienists’ Association invites you to JOIN NOW!
At its 2016 House of Delegates held June 3-5 in Fresno, California, the Delegates ratified the Board of Trustees’ action to end the existing charter with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA). Although we valued our relationship with ADHA, it was time and in the best interests of CDHA and all California hygienists to break away from that long-standing structure.
What does that mean?
CDHA is no longer affiliated with ADHA. Your dues will provide for your membership in CDHA and its local component. All membership dues will go towards the advancement and support of the dental hygiene profession in California.
If you were a current member with CDHA before the HOD vote, your membership with CDHA is valid through your current membership expiration date and then you will need to join through CDHA Central Office for your state and local component membership.
What is the cost of membership?
CDHA dues are $210/year and component dues are $20-$30/year depending on the component. A membership application form is attached.
Membership FAQs
I want to remain a member of CDHA and ADHA. How do I do that?
To join with CDHA and your local component, you must join through the CDHA Central Office. Information about ADHA membership can be obtained by contacting ADHA directly.
How do I join with CDHA and my component?
You may complete the attached membership form or call Central Office at 916-993-9102. There will be an online submission form very soon!
My renewal date with CDHA before the HOD vote was December 31, 2016. Am I still a CDHA member?
Yes, if you renewed before May 1, 2016, your membership payment to CDHA and your component was received and you do not need to send membership forms to CDHA until that date.
Please contact Central Office or your Component Trustee to learn how the new CDHA membership structure will BENEFIT YOU!

Giving Backby Laura Birchett, RDHSDCDHS Community Outreach Chair
Several days ago I found myself flipping through the pages of my graduation photo album. I can vividly remember that day… Even after standing in line for over two hours, having to sit through excessively long speeches given by people whom I’ve never met, and my feet aching from the stilettos that no one would ever see underneath my oversized gown, it was still one of the happiest moments of my life. That forty-five seconds it took to walk across the stage and receive my diploma was symbolic of all that I had worked so hard to accomplish.
In all of my struggles to make it through school, I was fortunate enough to have an amazing support system. My family was my personal cheerleading squad. My friends allowed me to vent about clinic although they had no idea what a Cusp of Carabelli was or how I could possibly lose points for missing it. My community also came through for my class as we raised funds to pay for our graduation celebration. I currently have neighbors who own more “RDH” and “tooth” paraphernalia than any non-hygienist should ever possess and who (in profound irony) purchased more candy than any hygienist should ever be caught selling. In the times when I doubted myself, there was always someone who believed in me. Even complete strangers, innocent and unsuspecting while walking past the clinic – people who had never met me before actually followed me down the hallway and into my operatory because they believed that I knew what I was doing.
Financially, we all suffered some hardship through hygiene school. Before I even entered the hygiene program, scholarships and financial aid became my saving grace. In many of my scholarship applications I wrote that once I become a licensed hygienist I planned to use my skills and education to give back to my community. Again, it was strangers who believed in me. Someone felt that the promises I made were worth investing in. The scholarships I received allowed me to purchase text books & instruments, pens & paper, and to pay my rent & bills throughout a costly education. After receiving every scholarship I wrote a letter of appreciation, thanking each organization by vowing to keep my promise to help those in need.
Volunteering is my way of giving back to the community that supported me throughout my education. One of the most gratifying characteristics of my profession is knowing that there is not a single person on this earth who wouldn’t benefit from the skills and knowledge I possess as a hygienist. Between work, family, and many other commitments, it can be hard to fit volunteer time into a busy schedule. The San Diego community is fortunate to have a plethora of organizations which serve our community and support its growing population. The misfortune is that many of these organizations often fall short on volunteers. As the new Community Outreach Chair for SDCDHS, I would like to work on bridging that gap by connecting those in need to our members who care.
Volunteering provides career experience, teaches valuable job skills, expands your network and boosts social skills. Studies also show that it can increase self-esteem and combat depression. Volunteering with family and friends can even improve your relationship by bringing you closer together through a meaningful experience. Personally, the fulfillment I get from volunteering is knowing that there is someone who needed my time much more than I did that day. Maybe I skipped Sunday breakfast with the family or missed out on a day at the beach. Whatever the case may be, I know that I have given more than I gave up and that I always get back more than I give.
If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information on the community activities of SDCDHS, please email me at: Laura Birchett, RDH- rdh_laura@att.net
