Wedding Rites

A new baby, is received with much aplomb in the Malay Community

Birth Rites

When the baby is seven days old, a naming ceremony is held.

The baby’s head is also shaved and its hair is weighed.

A sum equivalent to its value in gold in given to the poor.

The baby is also placed in the hammock for the first time

This rite is practised by most Muslims in the world.

This rite is now accepted as part of the Malay culture.

When the earlier Malays embraced the religion they took along certain religious rites.

The Engagement Ceremony

Malay couples are usually engaged for a few months.

This is to provide time for both sides to prepare for the wedding

The groom’s family brings gifts for the intended bride.

The wedding date is set and the the bride’s family will set a dowry to be given by the groom.
