Buckhannon,W.VA,1982 JosephBellowsGalleryispleasedtoannounceitsupcomingsoloexhibition,AmericansSeen,bySageSohier.TheexhibitionwillopenonApril15thandcontinuethroughMay31st,2017.AnopeningreceptionwillbeheldwiththeartistonSaturday,April15th,from6-8pm.Thisexhibitionmarkstheartistsfirstsoloexhibitionatgallery.AmericansSeenwillpresentakeyselectionofSohier’sblackandwhitephotographsofpeopleintheirenvironments.Takeninthelate1970’stotheearly1980sherportraitsrevealaparticulartimeandplace.DistinctlyAmerican,yetcollectivelygroundedintheirexpressionofthehumancondition,herexceptionalphotographsshowouroften-strangeexpressionofthedailyritualsthatbringmeaningtoourlife.JosephBellowsGallerywillbeexhibitingSohier’svintagegelatinsilverprintsfromthisseries.AmericansSeenwillalsobecelebratedbyaforthcomingmonographbyNazraeliPress.

SohierhasreceivedfellowshipsfromtheNoStringsFoundation,theJohnSimonGuggenheimMemorialFoundation,theNationalEndowmentfortheArts,andtheMassachusettsArtistsFoundation.HerworkhasbeenincludedingroupshowsattheMuseumofModernArt,theInternationalCenterforPhotography,andtheArtInstituteofChicagoandisinthecollectionsoftheMuseumofModernArt,MuseumofFineArts,Houston,SanFranciscoMuseumofModernArt,ClevelandMuseumofArt,Nelson-AtkinsMuseumofArt,PortlandMuseumofArtandtheBrooklynMuseum.Booksonherworkincluded:PerfectibleWorlds(Photolucida,2007),AboutFace(ColumbiaCollegeChicagoPress,2012),andAtHomeWithThemselves:Same-SexCouplesin1980'sAmerica(SpottedBooks,2014),WitnesstoBeauty(KehrerVerlag,2016).SohierhastaughtphotographyatHarvardUniversity,WellesleyCollege,andtheMassachusettsCollegeofArt.SageSohierhasbeenphotographingpeopleintheirenvironmentsformorethan30years.
