AVONDALE, AZ | TonyStewart strengthened hisNextel Cup points lead overJimmie Johnson as the seriesheads to Homestead, Flori-da, for the final race of theseason, but the two bignewsmakers were Kurt andKyle Busch.Kyle, the younger brother ofdefending Nextel Cup cham-pion, Kurt Busch won Sun-day’s Checker Auto Parts500K at Phoenix Internation-al Raceway for his secondwin of the year.“This was number two, butwe should have had severalmore,” said Kyle. “I’mbehind my brother one hun-dred per cent, and I want tothank Crown Royal for get-ting rid of the 2004 champi-on.”Kyle’s reference to CrownRoyal is because they are themajor sponsor on the No. 97Ford driven by his brotherKurt. Prior to the race, Kurtwas suspended by carowner, Jack Roush, for theremaining two races of theseason, and replaced withKenny Wallace.Kurt Busch was chargedwith running a stop sign,speeding, and reckless dri-ving on Friday night. At thetime he was stopped, alcoholwas smelled on his breath bythe arresting deputy, but abreathalyzer machine failedso he was not charged with aDUI.But what makes the storyeven worse, is that RogerPenske, the car owner Buschwill be driving for in 2006,told a national televisionaudience he would usemoney to get Busch off thehook.“It’s unfortunate,” saidPenske. “But we are anawful big racing team andcircumstances like this dooccur. It will in no way jeop-ardize his relationship withus.“I’m going to get with the

sheriff and see what we cando to get him (Busch) out ofthis, and maybe do some-thing for the community.”In other words, some in theNASCAR community mayfigure, Penske is saying,“We’ll just see what kind ofbig community project theywant and toss a couple mil-lion dollars into it, and thenthat will be the end of it.”However, Jack Roush,Busch’s current team owner,didn’t view the situation asrosy as Penske.“I originally didn’t plan totake any action,” said Roush.“I felt like we could standaside and say it’s none of ouraffairs. But after we read thesponsor commitments, wehad to take action.“This suspension is madeafter full review of all the cir-cumstances surroundingKurt’s Friday night alterca-tion with the Arizona police,and after consultation withour primary sponsors,Newell Rubbermaid andDiageo. All parties are incomplete support that theaction being taken today isnecessary and appropriateunder the circumstances.“We give our profound apol-ogy and support to thearresting officer and theentire Maricopa Countysheriff’s office and thank allof the officers for the greatjob they do with helping thePhoenix International Race-way bring our event to somany wonderful Arizonarace fans.”According to an AssociatedPress report, Busch wasargumentative, uncoopera-tive, and called the arrestingdeputies “wimps.” He wastaken into custody for suspi-cion of driving under theinfluence of alcohol, andtransported to a sheriff’ssubstation at the raceway.“This was not alcohol-relat-ed,” said Kurt Busch. “I wasspeeding, but I certainlywasn’t operating under theinfluence of alcohol. I cer-tainly wished this hadn’thappened, and I am verysorry.”

A breath test was adminis-tered, but the breath analyz-er failed to operate properly,and Busch was ticketed forreckless driving andreleased.“Our streets are not to beused as raceways,” saidMaricopa County Sheriff JoeArpaio. “He ought to confinehis speed to the race track.The guy thinks he can comein here and do what hewants. We’re going to dowhat we can to show him hecan’t race like that on ourstreets, and do what he didto my deputies.”Greg Biffle, who led the mostlaps, was second, followedby, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stew-art, Bobby Labonte, CarlEdwards, Jimmie Johnson,Robby Gordon, Dale Jarrett,and Travis Kvapil roundedout the top-10.Stewart gained 14 points onsecond-place driver JimmieJohnson in this year’s Chase.He now leads Johnson by 52points, and third-place dri-ver, Carl Edwards by 87points. Greg Biffle is fourth,102 points back. These arethe only drivers that have amathematical possibility ofwinning.“Our car had good balanceduring the race,” said Stew-art. “We kept on working onit, and it was good on longruns. This year we had 21 chili contestants enter for the chanceto be called the best. The entrants varied from fire fighters tolocal restaurants. Firefighters made over $1500, with 100 per-cent of the proceeds going to the Seacoast Area FirefightersToy Bank.

First place in the 2005 Seacoast Area Firefighters Toy BankChili Cook Off went to “L” Street Tavern, “L” Street, Hamp-ton Beach, with their Sam Adams Chili. Second place went toHampton Firefighter, Bill Paine with his sweet goose chili;third place went to Jane Webber of Hampton.

Fire departments that operate Toy Banks as part of the Sea-coast Area Firefighters Toy Bank are Hampton, Exeter,Seabrook, North Hampton, Portsmouth, Newington,Durham, Rochester, Rye, Somersworth and Dover.

Veterans as part of the Hampton American Legion Post #35,tribute to Veterans. Our Post Commander, Ralph Fatello orga-nized another great patriotic ceremony worthy of attendance.HPD Lt. Rich Sawyer, a Marine Corps Veteran, delivered amoving address.

CONCORD | The gover-nor announced on Tuesdaythat he will nominateHampton Police Chief BillWrenn to serve as NewHampshire’s Commissionerof Correc-tions atWednesday’sG o v e r n o rand Councilmeeting.

“ C h i e fWrenn hasthe knowl-edge andproven abili-ty to workwith me, thelegislature, and correctionsemployees to develop along-term vision for our cor-rections department thatfocuses [on] keeping our cit-izens safe and reducingcrime,” said Gov. JohnLynch in a news release.

Wrenn has served aschief since early 1995, buthas been with the Hamptonpolice department since1974, becoming a full-timeofficer after serving part-time for six months.

Since that time Wrennhas worked his way upthrough the ranks serving as

detective, detective sergeantin command of CriminalInvestigations, deputy chiefof police for administration,deputy chief of police foroperations, as well as actingpolice chief.
