OneofthemostdynamicanddeterminedbandscontinuouslytouringAmericaforsince1989,DonnatheBuffalohascreatedacommunityenvironmentattheirshowsthroughtheirdistinctive,groove-heavy,anddanceablemusic.DonnatheBuffaloisabandforthepeoplethatisaccessible,positive,andmemorable.WithrootsinoldtimefiddlemusicthatevolvedintoasoulfulelectricAmericanmixinfusedwithelementsofcajun/zydeco,rock,folk,reggae,andcountry,Donna’smusicoftencontainssocialandmoralresponsibilityascorebeliefs,andtheyarejustsimplyfuntogetoutandcelebratelifewith.

DonnatheBuffaloisJebPuryear(vocals,electricguitar)andTaraNevins(vocals,guitar,fiddle,accordion,scrubboard)joinedbyDavidMcCracken(Hammondorgan,HonerClavinet&piano),KyleSpark(bass)andMarkRaudabaugh(drums).“It’sbeenreallyfunwiththislineup,”Puryearsays.“Yougettothepointwhereyou’replayingonareallyhighlevel,thingsareclickingandit’sliketurningonthekeytoareallygoodcar.Itjustgoes.”“Youhavetodojustwhatyouwanttodo,andeveryonelikesdifferentthings,”Nevinssays.“BothJebandIcomefromthisbackgroundofold-timefiddlemusic,whichisverynatural,veryreal,veryunder-produced,andallaboutcomingfromthegut—flyingbytheseatofyourpants.So,wehavethatinus,too.”

releaseSilverlined,aswellasthe2013release(bothonSugarHill)didwellontheAmericanaMusicChart,eachplacingwellintothetopten.In2011NevinsreleasedWoodandStone,producedbyLarryCampbellinLevonHelmStudios,andMuletoRidein1999onSugarHillRecords.

DonnatheBuffalodrewitsoriginalinspirationfromacherishedpartoftheAmericanheritage:theold-timemusicfestivalsofthesouththatdrewentiretownsandcountiestogether.Notonlywasitplayingmusicattheseevents,itwasthevibeandthetogethernessthatbondedthepeoplethatattended.DonnatheBuffaloplaysmusicthatoftenmoveslistenersphysicallyandspiritually.Inthewordsofalongtimefan,“Theirsongsarewellknowntocontainlyricsofferingpoetryandsagecommentaryontheattractionsandstruggleswithloveandpoliticsinthislife.Theirmagneticmusicalmixhasoftenbeendescribedasdancemusic,and,forsure,thereiseverythingfromfoot-tappingtoget-up-and-feel-ecstaticmovingintheirsound;butthereisalsosomedeeplysatisfyingsolaceinwhatDTBhastosayandhowtheysayit.”

Jebtalksofhisinspiration“rollingoffallthegreatprotestsongsandthesociallyconsciousmusiclikeBobMarleyandTheBeatlesandBobDylan–allofthatstuff.Sothat,tome,issortoflikeatraditiontowritefromthatangleasawayofreflectingonwhatyoufeelabouttheworldandhowyoufeelitcouldbebetterandgettingtoadifferentplaceasasociety.There’salsothestrengththatcomesfrommusicandgivesyouthefeelinglikeyoucanchangethosethingsandmakesomeprogress,andthenexpresssomeoftheparticularsaboutwhatyou’dliketochange.”
