Season 10:11
THE RSNO SEASON 10:11
HAS IT ALLYOUR FAVOURITES…
From the Emperor to the Pathétique and from Haydn’s last symphony to Grieg’s greatest concerto, taking in favourites
by Roussel and Brahms along the way.
THE BIGGEST NAMES…Familiar faces include Music Director Stéphane Denève and rSnO
Junior chorus Director, Christopher Bell. and joining the Orchestra from across the globe will be Andrey Boreyko,
Peter Oundjian and Roy Goodman.
Two of the uK’s most respected piano soloists, Paul Lewis and Stephen Hough, will be complemented by the sensational Venezuelan
pianist Gabriela Montero – who performed to millions at the inauguration of President Obama in 2009.
AND EXCITING GEMS…Your Orchestra always loves to surprise and this Season you’ll hear rare treats by Roussel and Lyadov, masterpieces of the future by
Connesson and Rouse and, launching in Dundee for the first time, Naked Classics, a new way to enjoy the music you love!
RSNO SEASON 10:11
Standing the Test of Timei invite you to join me and the Orchestra at the caird Hall as we encounter some of the great works of the symphonic repertoire: music that has truly ‘stood the test of time’.
Dundee deserves the best and that is exactly what you’ll get, with three of the world’s finest pianists – Paul lewis, Gabriela Montero and Stephen Hough – joining us to play favourites from the piano repertoire: Beethoven’s Emperor, Prokofiev’s Third and Grieg’s ever popular Piano concerto.
Just as beloved are Tchaikovsky’s mighty Sixth Symphony, the Pathétique, and Brahms’ Third Symphony – both very personal works for these great composers, full of emotion, but always a rewarding experience for the listener.
i am very excited that in 2011 the rSnO will bring its celebrated Naked Classics series to Dundee for the first time, featuring Haydn’s Symphony no104. We are very proud of naked classics: not only is it a brand new way to discover more about the music we know and love but it is also a perfect introduction for concert hall newcomers.
So, whether you are only just discovering the wonder of orchestral music or if you have travelled with this orchestra for many decades, we know that you will have a wonderful experience with the rSnO this Season. Welcome!
a très bientôt!
Stéphane Denève RSNO Music Director

Great Concertos: The EmperorThursday 30 sepTember 2010: 7.30pm
Beethoven lays all his cards on the table with the grandest, most stirring piano concerto he ever wrote. as poetic as he is brilliant, the masterly British pianist Paul lewis is one of today’s greatest Beethoven interpreters. and melody, excitement and invention are in abundance in both roussel’s famous and colourful ballet score and connesson’s spectacular Aleph.

Great Symphonies: Tchaikovsky’s PathétiqueThursday 3 February 2011: 7.30pm
Tchaikovsky’s symphonies aren’t just about the melodies: they’re no-holds-barred emotional autobiographies, bursting at the seams with all the composer’s hopes, fears and desperate passions. and the Pathétique is the most overwhelming of them all. Plus keyboard fireworks too, as the supremely talented Gabriela Montero tackles Prokofiev’s best-loved piano concerto.

THE RSNO’S GROUND-BREAKING NAKED CLASSICS IS COMING TO DUNDEE FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME…naked classics is your chance to find out everything you wanted to know about classical music but were afraid to ask! Presenter Paul rissmann uses a fresh, funny and informal mixture of projections, lighting, excerpts from the Orchestra and interviews with players to reveal the stories behind the music – what the world was like when this music was first heard, why it was written and how it was composed. Then, after the interval, sit back and enjoy the work being performed in all its glory by the rSnO.

Haydn’s final symphony was also the last of his musical postcards from london. its premiere in 1795 earned him a fortune – but after writing 104 symphonies you wouldn’t begrudge him that, would you? For this very special, first ever Dundee Naked Classics, Paul and authentic performance specialist conductor Roy Goodman strip back the veneer to see what lies beneath this popular classic.
