Award-winning scientist RichardFortey will explain how a Chiltonbeech woodland has survived fornearly a thousand years on the samesite, earning a living while at the sametime supporting a rich community ofspecial plants and animals.

His book The Wood from the Trees willprovide the background to his talk –describing a yearlong study of severalacres of beech and bluebell wood that hebought after retiring from his position atthe Natural History Museum.

Richard Alan Fortey FRS FRSL, former senior palaeontologist at theNatural History Museum, natural history writer & author and TVpresenter. President of the Geological Society of London for itsbicentennial year of 2007 and was elected to The Royal Society. “In the last decade I have returned to being the general naturalist I waswhen I was young.”
