A. Scope
This Volume primarily contains a list of names and addresses of
individuals and organizations that are associated with the rotary wing
industry. An attemot was made to indicate the active or inactive
status of the names listed; also, a date is listed indicating the year
the firm or individual was last known to be active.
B. Preparation
This Volume was oreoared and edited by E. K. Liberatore, Prewitt
Aircraft Conraany.
The project of which this Volume is a part was initiated by the
Air Technical Intelligence Center. It was continued to completion by
the Wright Air Development Center, under supervision of Messrs. B.
Lindenbaum and W. Oleksak.

The Russian scientist, Lomonosov,
presented to the Russian Academy of
Sciences details for a small helicop-
ter capable of lifting thermometers
and other small instruments into the
air.

Paucton in his "Theory of the
Archimedes Screw" described a
helicopter with two screws, called
machine "Pterophore" France.

The Launoy-Bienvenue helicopter
was demonstrated before the French
Academy of Sciences. The blade was
made of feathers. This is the earl-
iest record of a helicopter model
capable of flying.

Count Lambertgye described a
rotorcraft to be used for dropping
messages from balloons.

Vittorio Sarti of Bologna, Italy,
invented a coaxial rotor helicopter.

George Cavley, the Father of
British Aeronautics, proposed a
lateral rotor helicopter driven by
steam.
l846 ca.
Marc Seguin of France experimen-
ted with a large lifting screw; later,
he tested a flapping wing device.

Dr. Van Hecke built a helicopter
at Brussels, Belgium. The machine
had 4 rotors.
l848
The earliest known record of
rotary wing aircraft in the U.S.A.,
being given thought. An anonymous
writer for the "Scientific American"
described a multi-rotor helicopter '
with pusher propellers.

Phillips built a working model of
a lateral rotor helicopter with steam
jet driven rotors.
l857
First British patent for a helicop-
ter issued to Henry Bright for a
coaxial rotor helicopter.
l86l
Mortimer Nelson, an American,
proposed a helicopter weighing 500
pounds and powered by a 40 HP steam
engine. Nelson obtained the first
U.S. patent for a helicopter.

A helicopter designed by Prof.
Mitchell was under development for
the U.S. Army, intended for use in
the Civil War.

Ponton D'Amecourt was engaged
in helicopter research. He built a
4 pound steam driven coaxial model.

William C. Powers of Mobile,
Alabama constructed a model of a
proposed helicopter to carry explo-
sives.
l863
Nadar (Felix Tournachon) pro-
posed a coaxial rotor helicopter
in France. He conducted a series
of balloon flights to raise money
for the project. The enterprise
was a failure.
l863
Gabriel De La Landelle pro-
posed a huge tandem rotor helicop-
ter. The following year, he formed
the "Societe De Aviation"
l874
The Achenbach steam driven
helicopter was proposed. This craft
included a screw operating in a ver-
tical plane.
l874
Coaxial rotor helicopter built at
the New York Novelty Works. It
was powered by a 2 HP vertical
steam boiler. The project was a-
bandoned.
l878
The steam driven Italian Forla-
nini helicopter flew to a height of 30
feet and remained in the air 20 sec-
onds. This was a reduced model.
l879
The French Castel helicopter,
driven by compressed air, was
damaged in tests. This was a
reduced model.
l904
Charles Renard performed model
demonstrations before the French Aca-
demy of Sciences, using rotors with
blades attached to the hub by cardan
joints.

Whitehead multiple rotor helicopter
built at Bridgeport, Connecticut. No
flights were ever made.

G. F. Myers of Columbus, Ohio,
built a 3 rotor helicopter.

Tests at Douai, France, of the 4
rotor Breguet helicopter.

At Lisieux, France, the Cornu
helicopter lifted its constructor for the
first time.

Otto Luyties, an American, tested
his coaxial rotor system. The rotors
produced a thrust of 700 pounds.

Sikorsky coaxial rotor helicopter
built in Russia.

English tandem rotor helicopter built
in San Francisco. It was damaged July,

circuit about 20 miles long, at
no less than 60 MPH.

First demonstration of Cierva
autogiro at Farnborough, England,
before officials of the British Air
Ministry.

The Italian Air Ministry announced
a helicopter competition offering
$33,650 in prizes.
Requirements:
a. Full power ground test of l hour
b. Minimum altitude of 65 feet and
controlled descent
c. Horizontal flight of 220 yards

Cierva autogiro demonstrated at

in autogiro from Croydon to Le Bourget.

The first autogiro flight in America
was made by Capt. Arthur Raws on of
the Spanish Army at Willow Grove, Pa.

The first American pilot to make
an autogiro flight was H. F. Pitcairn
at Willow Grove, Pa. This craft,
Model C-8, was built in England and
fitted with a Wright engine for the
American demonstration.
l929, January
First autogiro flight in Italy was
made by Cierva in the C-8-3. Deliv-
ered at Rome to the Italian govern-
ment.

Final trials conducted on Dutch
Von Baumhauer tail rotor helicop-
ter. The craft made many hover-
ing flights at gross weights between
2000 and 2860 pounds, but never
rose more than a few feet off the
ground.

American patent rights for auto-
giro obtained by Harold Pitcairn.
Autogiro Company of America,
patent holding company formed.

giro flight. Pilot John M. Miller
flew from Willow Grove, Pennsyl-

airplane carrier, Langley.

Herrick HV-l convertaplane flown
at Niles, Michigan.

giro in U.S. by Frank E. Hammond

J. De La Cierva flew a direct
control autogiro onto the deck of a
Spanish seaplane carrier at anchor,
and took off again.
l935, January
Reginald Brie delivered Cierva
C-30 autogiro to Italy, landing it
on the cruiser Fiume at anchor in
the Gulf of La Spezia. This was
also done with the cruiser moving
at 24 knots.

First autogiro airmail delivery.
| Lou Leavitt,in a Kellett KD-l, and
j Jim Ray,in a Pitcairn PA-22,de-
I livered a load of airmail by land-
ing on the Philadelphia Post Office
roof. These were demonstration
flights.

Breguet-Dorand laboratory
gyroplane flown at Villacoublay,
France. Piloted by Claisse, the
craft flew a closed circuit of
approximately l500 feet at an
altitude of about 3l feet. A
week later the craft was flown
up to 62 MPH.

The British Weir W-5 helicopter
was test flown at Dalrymple, Scot-

was the first practical British heli-

Eastern Air Lines obtained a con-
tract from the U.S. Post Office Dept.
for conducting autogiro mail service
between the Philadelphia Post Office
roof and the Camden Airport. The
Kellett KD-lB autogiro was used.
The mail service was operated from

The first official flight of the
Sikorsky VS-300 made.

The Sikorsky VS-300 A established
a world's endurance record of l hour,
32 minutes and 26.l seconds.

First cross country flight in
a helicopter begun. The Sikorsky
XR-4 was flown from Stratford,
Connecticut, to Wright Field,
vton, Ohio, piloted by C. L.
Morris. The trip took 5 days and
covered 76l airline miles. The

The U.S. Air Force Technical
School at Chanute Field, Illinois,
established a course for the training
