‘The underlying reason behind my participation in Rotary is to play a part in implementing solutions to the many challenges the world is now facing -- challenges such as the environment, poverty, ageing populations, displaced youth, and a growing discrepancy between the rich and the poor. No doubt many other significant challenges will be revealed in coming years.” ……DG Keith Ryall
LAST WEEK: Pauline Lingemann
Last week, Rotary Club of Gisborne’s 2011-2012 Exchange Student, Pauline Lingemann from Börninghausen in Germany presented to the club and showed us many photos of her year in Australia. Pauline was sent to us from her local Lubecke Rotary club. She has had many wonderful experiences and enjoyed her stay with all her Host Families. She started and ended the year at Caroline Lee & Paul Kean’s house with a few stays in between during which she visited various Melbourne hotspots including the Aquarium and Daylesford. Her next host family was Patti and Phil Yarwood during which time she went to Queensland spending some time with their family and visited various other Victorian icon locations. She stayed with Danni and Andrew Hall acting as older sister to their lovely daughter Charlotte enjoying a once in a lifetime holiday in Bali with the family. Other Rotarians took her along the Great Ocean Road and to the football. She also was very happy that she went on the infamous Australian Safari tour at which she was able to spend 3 weeks with all the other Exchange students and experience first hand our great Australian land; Uluru, the Gold Coast and Sydney amongst them. Pauline finished up saying how grateful she was to the Rotary Club of Gisborne and thanked members for her year. She also presented at Braemar College o Tuesday at which she thanked the school and Rotary for making her stay possible.

YEAR OF THE FARMER
The ‘Australian Year of the Farmer’ celebrates what farmers provide for all
Australians. It’s about what we eat, … and about wool, cotton, timber - all the
fine products our farmers grow and harvest.
Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AM is Patron, and cricket legend Glenn McGrath
is an Ambassador.
The ’One-Country-Card’ can be purchased at participating Australia Post outlets,
and provides loads of savings, benefits and deals, while sales of the card will
promote development of Australian agriculture.
The Rotary Foundation (TRF) Chairman’s message
Bill Boyd, Chairman of The Rotary Foundation writes: ‘The announcement in January of a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for a further US$50 million for polio eradication reminds us of Rotary’s standing in the community. Bill Gates respects the millions of hours Rotarians have spent to bring us so much closer to success.’
WORDS OF PAUL HARRIS ‘It is not the purpose of Rotary to make social, religious or racial composites of its members.’ .,,,’My Road to Rotary’
