Thefocusoftheinstructionalprogramisonbuildingsolidliteracyskillsandeasingthetransitionfromelementaryschool.Usingmanydifferenttypesoftextsasafoundation,higher-levelthinkingskills(suchasinferenceandauthorialintent)aredevelopedthroughavarietyofresponses.

Atleastoneunitwillbedevotedtotextsthatthestudentswillchoosefromalistcreatedbyour

teachers.Outsidereadingassignments,authenticassessmentsandoralpresentationsfurtherenhancereading,writing,andspeakingskills-buildinguponstudents’elementaryschoolliteracyeducation.Additionalunitsofstudymayincludepoetry,interdisciplinarymythology,andshortstories.Todeveloptheirwritingskills,studentswillbeguidedthroughtheprocessofwritingessays.Thecontextualstudyofvocabularyisalsopartofeachunit,andgrammarstudysolidifiesstudents’understandingoftheirlanguageandtheirabilitytouseitforgreatesteffect.TheclasswillculminateforallstudentswiththeNYSGrade6EnglishLanguageArtsexam,whichisbasedontheCommonCoreLearningStandards.

ThiscourseisdesignedtoaddressthesevenstandardsfoundintheNewYorkStateK-6curriculumandselect7thgradetopicssuchasalgebraandgeometry.StudentswhosuccessfullycompletethiscoursewilladvancetoPre-AlgebraingradesevenandAlgebra1ingradeeight.

Thecurriculuminthiscoursewillincludemathematicalreasoning,numbersandnumeration,

OurSkillsforLifeandRaiseprogramsareself-contained,languagebased,academicprogramsdevelopedforstudentswhorequiretheessentialelementsofamodifiedcurriculum.Theprogramshelpstudentsachievemasteryoffunctionalacademic,social,andlifeskills.Studentsaremainstreamedforallelectiveclasseswhenappropriate.

Extra-CurricularProgramOurvariedafter-schoolprogramfor6th,7thand8thgradestudentsconsistsofintramuralandinterscholasticteamsandclubs.Allactivitiesaresupervisedbystaffmembers.Participationinextracurricularactivitiesisanintegralpartofastudent'seducationalexperience.However,involvementinourvariedextracurricularactivitiesshouldnotnegateacademicresponsibilities.AllstudentsmustadheretotheDistrict'sAcademicEligibilityPolicy.Thepolicystatesthatstudentsmaynotfailmorethanonesubject.Administrators,teachers,guidancecounselors,coachesandadvisorsmonitorallstudents'academicprogress.InterscholasticAthleticsTheathleticprogramprovidestheopportunityforinterested7thand8thgradestudentstocompetewithothermiddleschoolsinNassauCounty.NewYorkStateguidelinesdonotpermit6thgraderstoparticipateininterscholasticathletics.
