Roman architecture

• an  architectural style of medieval Europe characterized by semi-circular arches • was the first distinctive style to

spread across Europe since the Roman Empire

Characteristics of a Romanesque Architecture :

• Semi –circular arches • Use of different vaults• Buttresses• Thick walls• Latin cross plan, with several

side ,aisles separated by arcades and semicircular arches

Semicircular Arches

Buttress (Contrafuerte)- an architectural structure built against or projecting from a wall

Romanesque Architecture• Generally of flat square

profile and do not project a great deal beyond the wall.

spread through 19th-century Europe and continued, largely for

ecclesiastical and university structures, into the 20th century.

Characteristics of Gothic Architecture• Grew out of Romanesque architecture• Called Gothic by people during the Renaissance

who viewed Gothic as being crude and backward like the Goths who invaded Rome

The 3rd-century Great Ludovisi sarcophagus depicts a battle between Goths and Romans.
