Today’s Gospel concludes three weeks of readings from the 13th Chapter of Matthew’s Gospel. Throughout these three weeks we have heard Jesus teaching crowds about the kingdom of heaven, and we have heard Jesus interpret some of his teachings for the disciples. In this week’s Gospel, Jesus offers three more short parables. The first two parables describe the great value of the kingdom of heaven. In the first parable, Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like a buried treasure that is worth possessing even if it means giving up everything else. In the second parable, Jesus proposes that the kingdom of heaven is like a pearl of great worth for which one will sell everything else to possess. These parables teach us that we are to place everything we value in the service of the pursuit of the Kingdom of God. The third parable that Jesus proposes in today’s Gospel is different from the first two, but it is reminiscent of the parable of the sower heard in last week’s Gospel. The kingdom of heaven is compared to fishing with a wide net. After the fish have been collected, the good fish are kept and the bad fish are thrown away; so too, in the final judgment, will the wicked and the righteous be separated. Today’s Gospel concludes with a curious statement about the scribe who understands the kingdom of heaven. Here a metaphor is offered: this scribe is like the head of a household who “brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.” The scribes referred to here are experts of Mosaic law. It is possible that Jesus is here instructing the early Christian community on how to proceed in the interpretation of Jewish law with respect to Jesus’ “new” teaching. Jesus’ teaching about the kingdom of heaven does not replace the Jewish tradition; it interprets it in a different light.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Our ministry is in need of new members who knit or crochet and would like to share their talent with our ministry. All are welcome to joins us on the 3rd Sunday of each month in the St. Peters room from 11:30 to 1:30 pm. The meeting gives our members a chance to pray and work together as a group as well as exchange patterns and new ideas to enhance our ability to comfort others in need. You do not need to attend these meetings to be an active member to share your talent with our ministry. Please come to a meeting or call Betsy @ 973 893-2441 for more information on sharing your talent with our ministry. A prayer shawl or lap robe, which can be had for the asking, may well be comforting to someone limited in activity or going through a difficult time. You may request a shawl by speaking to one of our members, dropping by our meetings or calling the parish center. Please note our meetings will resume on Sunday, September 17th . Let us continue to pray for those making shawls and those who receive them.
BEYOND CORNERSTONE SERVICE ST. AUGUSTINE SOUP KITCHEN

You may donate toward these visits by writing a check to St. Thomas Parish---please note on your check that it is for the SOUP KITCHEN. Mark the envelope “Beyond Cornerstone service soup kitchen--- att. Alicia”. The 8th graders raised over $1,000 for the Bloomfield Animal Shelter with a Walk-a-thon and spent an exhausting day at the Community Food Bank of NJ helping to sort and box food donations. PARISH INFORMATION
Did you know FOR ST. THOMAS PARISH
Registration If you are presently not on our mailing list, receiving envelopes and the various parish mailings, the chances are that you are not a registered member of our parish. You are not automatically a registered member because you were married here or even if you were brought up here and lived in the parish with your parents–or went to school here. Membership is by formal registration only. Just call the Parish Center at (973) 338-9190 and let us know that you wish to register and the registration form will be mailed to you. Thank you.
How Do I Arrange a Wedding? Archdiocesan policy requires that arrangements be made with a Parish Priest at least one year before the wedding date. Arrangements can be made by calling the Parish Center, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. You should be a registered parishioner of St. Thomas in order to be married here.
"Time of Marriage" Well in advance of making other arrangements for your wedding, the time of your marriage should be arranged with one of the Parish Priests.
‘Directives’ You should consult one of the parish priests concerning the current Church law when a Catholic is marrying a person of another faith. All procedures for Marriage Preparation must still be followed, In preparation for Marriage here at Saint Thomas, you would ask you to be willing to follow the norms set by Canon (Church) Law, Archdiocesan and Parish Policy.
Baptisms We remind you to contact the parish at least three months prior to the Baptism of your child. We have scheduled various dates for Baptisms during the year. These schedules are published in the Bulletin and are available at the Parish Center. Baptism is a community celebration. Individual Baptisms are normally performed only in case of necessity.
