ROLE OF DOCTOR IN SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES

DefinitionSchool Health Service is a branch ofPreventive medicine which deals with medical inspection of school children and their health protection, primarily in the environment of the school.

OBJECTIVES OF SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICE (SHS)

• Early detection of defects through a

program of periodical medical

examination of school children.

• Teaching of staff of the school to

detect the defects in school children.

Communicable Disease.

DUTIES OF SCHOOL MEDICAL OFFICER• Conduct a periodical routine medical

inspection at the age of 5 , 9 , 13 & 17 years during school of a child.

• Annual inspection is be done by having school to stand in queues and any abnormality detected should be recorded for correction.

DUTIES OF SCHOOL MEDICAL OFFICER

• Arrange for immunization of children against infectious disease like Hepatitis B and maintain the record.

DUTIES OF SCHOOL MEDICAL OFFICER

• Advice the parents on the mental and physical conditions of children through school teacher or school nurse.

• Any child is suspected to be suffering from any ailment or reported by teacher, medical officer will quickly examine the child & give treatment or such advise as necessary.

• By lectures & demonstrations, educate the teachers in recognizing common ailments & defects of school children in the practice of first aid in school environment.

• Periodical inspection of water supply, toilet rooms & ventilation of buildings.

• Advise the school authorities on the construction of building with a view to proper ventilation, proper size of rooms, adequate seating arrangements & facilities like playgrounds.

• Vaccination equipment.• Disposable syringe.• Ear speculum.• Sterilizer and sprit lamp.• Wash basin and towel stand.• Scissors and surgical forceps.

Recommended drug for school clinic• Toothache solution.• Ear-ache drops.• Eye drops.• First aid kit for treatment of minor injuries.• Mixture : carminative , cough mixture.• Anti-biotic • Vitamin tablets.

DISEASES EXPECTED IN SCHOOL CHILDREN• Malnutrition.• Dental carries.• Parasitic infection.• Eye defects.• ENT disorders like TONSILITIES , PHARYGNITIS etc.
