Leadership Compass Activity
Debrief
Goal Setting
Questions
The ActivityThere are four leadership styles categorized into four compass
points: North, South, East, and West. If you are a North, go to
North Point, if you're a South, go to South Point, etc.
PURPOSETo carry out the mission and vision of the chapter, it takes a
team. No one leader can do their work alone.
The more effective the team, the more effective you are in
carrying out the goals of the chapter.
Building effective teams mean that you can build effective
leaders.
First, a few notes:
NO STEREOTYPINGThis is not about stereotyping. No
style is better than the other and all
styles are effective.
PREDOMINANT STYLEEveryone has one predominant style.
Select the style that describes your
leadership the majority of the time
or the one you feel most
comfortable with.
FINAL THOUGHTSIf you cannot determine which
direction best describes you, think
about when you approach your work
or a project. What's your first
inclination or tendency?
NORTHRESULTS + WARRIOR
You are the "get to the bottom line and let's go" type of person. You like to get moving on a task as quickly as possible. You love to plunge in and are quick to act.You like to try new things. You are decisive, active, and assertive. You love challenges and are not deterred by obstacles.
SOUTHRELATIONSHIP + HEALER
You are the caring direction and people oriented. You want to have everyone on the team's input before making a decision. You take everyone's feeling into account before making changes. You want to make sure everyone on the team feels supported and valued. You build on the ideas of others.
EASTVISIONARY
You are the "big picture" person. Before doing anything, you want to understand the vision and the why behind it. You are a creative thinker and very idea-oriented.You make decisions based on looking towards the future.
WESTPROCESS + TEACHER
You are the nuts, bolts, and details person. You want to know the who, what, when, where, and why before acting. You follow procedures and guidelines and need to know the specific details. You are practical, dependable, and thorough. You are the analyst.

Benefits of the Directions
SOUTH EASTNORTH WEST
If you have a project that
needs to get done, turn to
your North. They will
accomplish each task on
time and efficiently. They
are the ones who keep the
momentum going in the
chapter.
They will keep other team
members sane in chaos or
difficult times. If you are
experiencing high turnover
in your executive board,
find a South to make
everyone feel valuable on
the team.
They figure out how to do
a lot with little resources,
and they are skilled at
identifying certain flaws in
plans that others overlook.
If you have limited
resources, your "Westies"
can figure out how to work
with little to get a lot done.
If your chapter/exec board
needs to grow or reach
new heights, you need an
East on your team. You will
keep doing the same thing
as usual until you bring on
an East who has the vision
to see beyond tomorrow.
HOW TO MOTIVATE THE NORTH'S:You need to be quick, clear, and talk with confidence.
Focus on the challenge of the task.
Provide plenty of autonomy.
Establish timelines and stick with them.
HOW TO MOTIVATE THE SOUTH'S:Allow for expressions of feelings.
Give positive reassurances.
Be attentive to relationships in the team.
Listen hard.
MOTIVATING
HOW TO MOTIVATE THE EAST'S:Show appreciation and enthusiasm for ideas.
Be patient during the idea generation process.
Avoid criticizing and judging their ideas.
Provide support for others to help with details and
follow through.
HOW TO MOTIVATE THE WEST'S:Allow them plenty of time for decision-making.
Provide data they can trust.
Don't be sensitive when they say "no."
Do not be overly emotional.
