Zero tolerance on illegal initiation schools
Police have issued a stern warning to traditional surgeons who will stage initiation schools without proper documentation this winter that they will face the wrath of the law.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said innocent boys lose their lives as a result of circumcision procedures which goes horribly wrong due to in-competency of unregistered surgeons and police will have none of such this season.
Mulaudzi said a total of 276 initiation schools have been approved this winter.
“Initiation schools are set to start on June 14 and conclude their activities on July 18, 2014. Starting such a school before the set date or continuing with the initiation school activities beyond July 18 will render the institution illegal and police will vigorously deal with
those responsible,” said Brig. Mulaudzi. He said 60 schools were approved
in Mopani,19 in Vhembe district, 85 in Sekhukhune, 43 in Capricorn, and 69 in Waterberg.
He urged parents to verify the legitimacy of the initiation school with their local traditional authorities before enrolling their children.
“Police will also not tolerate the abduction of boys into these initiation schools in the disguise of culture and tradition,” he said
He added that a provincial joint priority committee made up of the departments of health, co-operative governance, human settlements, and traditional affairs and other parties had been established to oversee and monitor the running of the initiation schools.

Anybody with information regarding this missing person is asked to contact lieutenant NeverdieMatwalana on 071 774 6739.
If it was not for breastfeeding her child, a 28 year-old woman might not have heard that there was an intruder in her house. The incidence took place in Pulaneng Village in Maake on Saturday.
It was around 02:30 in the morning and she was busy breastfeeding her child when she heard foot steps in her kitchen. According to Lieutenant Colonel Maotshe Ngoepe the woman went to inspect and she was confronted by an unknown man who insisted that she give him a laptop and cell phone. ‘She handed her cell phone to him and told him she doesn’t have a laptop. She therefore ran to the sliding door and opened it. Another man pushed her back into the house but she managed to get away and run to her neighbors’ house,’ said Ngoepe. She screamed for help and community members came to her rescue.
‘They managed to arrest one suspect and handed him over to the police. He mentioned other suspects, but community members
only managed to trace only one and he was severely assaulted. ‘He was taken to CN Phatudi Hospital and died as a result of injuries sustained,’ said Ngoepe.
Another incident left a man dead in Relela Village. According to Ngoepe the now deceased man went to a house at about 22:00 where a couple was sleeping. They woke up when they heard someone kicking the door. When they opened the door he was holding two beer bottles and after he put them down he grabbed the now awake man, by his shirt. ‘A fi ght started and the intruder was stabbed once in his chest. The men chased each other around the yard till the intruder collapsed. The police were notifi ed and an ambulance was called to the scene,’ he said. Ngoepe said the stabbed man was still alive when he was taken to Van Velden Hospital but passed away the following morning. ‘The suspect was arrested and was due to appear before Bolobedu Magistrate Court by the time of going to press,’ concluded Ngoepe.

R7 million to replace street lightsFaulty street lights in the Greater Tzaneen Municipal
areas will soon be a thing of the past. The Greater Tzaneen Municipality has appointed an
electrical contractor to replace all existing streetlights with new advance energy effi cient lights.
Municipal spokesperson, Neville Ndlala, said the project which will cost R7 million will see the replacement of faulty streetlights in Tzaneen, Letsitele, Heanertszburg, Nkowankowa and Lenyenye.
Ndlala said Umphile Constructors has been appointed to carry out the work on the behalf of the municipality.
“The current streetlights are longer working properly and securing parts is more daunting and almost impossible,” said Ndlala.
He said that the main objective of the project is to save electricity because of the high electricity consumption rate by the current streetlights.
He indicated the scope of work only covers replacement of existing streetlight and not the installation of new ones.
“The installation of the streetlights which have new advanced technology will also reduce turnaround time for the fi xing of dysfunctional streetlights. Residents in all affected towns are urged to exercise patience while the municipality sort out the challenge,” said Ndlala.
He added that the funding for the project was secured from the national Department of Energy.
Multi-million rands tender scam uncoveredThe Greater Tzaneen Municipality has
awarded the multi-million rands worth of tenders to various companies without following proper procedures.
According to The Citizen newspaper Quality Plant Hire and Expectra 388 CC are two of the local companies which allegedly benefi ted from the irregular awarding of tenders by the municipality.
The Citizen reported that a R38 million tar road project is one of the tenders awarded to Expectra 388 CC without following proper procedure.
The Senakwe-Morapalala road project was issued on November 22, 2012. The appointment of the tender or instruction was never discussed with the municipal manager,
Masiye Mankabidi.Mankabidi is on suspension for allegedly
effecting payment of R7,7 million to MacP Construction in August.
Other tenders, worth between R387 200,99 and R523 971,71, according to the national newspaper were issued irregularly to Quality Plant Hire and Expectra 388 CC by the municipality, without any quotes on December 18 and 19 last year.
The companies are owned by Ettienne Tolmay, who is believed to have been close to senior government offi cials in the Mopani district.
Expectra 388 CC managing director, Galia Motala categorically denied that any tenders were awarded to her company irregularly.“We
went through normal tender processes,” Motala said.
Confi dential documents in possession of The Citizen also reveal that the municipality, which has a budget of R933 million for the 2014/15 fi nancial year, received a bill of quantities showing an increase of 76% to the initial total cost of the Senakwe-Morapalala road project.
The National Treasury regulations require competitive bids for contracts above R500 000.
What is even more worrying was that Quality Plant Hire and Expectra 388 CC had been part of several deviations (tenders awarded outside the normal supply chain) by the municipality in the past and yet it was still
given preference.Another contract which raised eyebrows
was awarded to Gravelotte Filling Station and Projects last year. The company was awarded a R147 969.70 project to supply the municipality with 30 laptops. It is alleged that some of the laptops did not reach the municipality.
The matter has been referred to the SA Police Service for possible criminal investigations.
The acting municipal manager, Obby Mkhombo denied any tenders had been awarded without the correct procedures being followed. He, however, admitted that his municipality was facing serious challenges.
Kicking it for health benefit
WARM UP: Pensioners warming up during the older persons qualifying games held at Giyani stadium last week.
Playing soccer is one of the quickest answers to solving the high Blood Pressure puzzle among elderlypeople, according to Johana Machava the chairperson of Giyani Older Persons Forum.
Speaking during the older persons’ qualifying games played at Giyani stadium recently, Machava said those that participated in the categories such as soccer, running and other labour intensive sporting codes had a greater chance of reducing their high Blood Pressure.
“This is why as Greater Giyani Older Persons Forum; we always promote sporting activities that are more oriented to health benefi ts. The aim is not only to win but have fun in such a way that we also benefi t on our health and avoid developing high blood pressure problem which is common to older people,” she said.
Machava said researches showed that women who joined in the fun and ran around kicking ball in the fi eld like men could dramatically improve their blood pressure.
“Beside the health benefi ts related to high Blood Pressure, the social aspect of getting together as older persons also help us improve on our stress level as older persons,” she continued.
According to Machava, the winners of the day in each category would proceed to play at district level on the June 24 and then provincially if they make it through to another stage.
“We still have a long way to go...those that will qualify provincially would proceed to the national level,” she said.
Meanwhile, Greater Giyani Municipality, mayor Pat Hlungwani commended the Giyani Older Persons Forum for their effort in promoting good health.
“It is very encouraging to see our grandmothers play soccer. As a government we’re happy because this does not only benefi t the participants, but also leaves behind a valuable lesson for youth to follow suit in order to live a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

Engenius inspires learnersThe Engineering Council of South Africa
(ECSA) hosted Engenius workshops, as part of the Rural Education Festival at Sekgosese College of Education Senwamokgope, a village last week.
The hands-on engineering workshops were primarily aimed at inspiring learners in schools, to take interest in the engineering profession.
“Engenius is a programme initiated and driven by the ECSA and, is mandated with bringing knowledge, appreciation and understanding of the engineering profession to learners in schools, by using every- d a y materials to show them how engineering touches their lives,” said the Marketing and Communicat ion Assistant at ECSA, Sandisa Maqubela.
M a q u b e l a , who is also the principal facilitator of Engenius said although they were supposed to do only two w o r k s h o p s per day, the demand was huge, and they actually reached over 225 keen learners.
Through the workshops, Maqubela encouraged the learners to identify the
elements around their lives that are a direct result of engineering, such as roads (civil engineering), cars (mechanical engineering),
water (chemical engineering) and food (agricultural engineering).
“By so doing, Engenius clearly demonstrates that engineering as a
profession is about solving every-day problems using a combination of mathematical and science solutions,” said Maqubela.
Meanwhile, the Rural Education Festival took the form of exhibition
where stakeholders such as UNISA, the Department of Public Works, First
National Bank and Statistics South Africa were showcasing their
products and services.According to
the organisers, approximately 11300 visited the open exhibition, with 82 teachers and 189 members of the public.
“The intention of the festival is to grow
nationally to provide career advice to schools that are based in the out-lying areas
of South Africa. It is the intention of
Engenius to support this programme to grow the profession with much needed problem solving
skills,” added Maqubela.

Tradi onal Leader Herbet Mageza, Ward Councillor Sophy Raganya and LEDET environmental offi cer Daniel Mathole plan ng a tree.
Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) took the initiative to visit AOGU Day Care Centre to plant trees. The day care centre has a very big open space so the department decided to utilize trees to create shade for the children to play under during long summer sunny days.
Addressing the audience at the initiative, Sydweil Matsila who is a project coordinator at the department of environmental affairs, Working for Water said “the children need shade, the general public needs a park so I believe if this crèche develops an area with lawn and park seats it will be a great place that will be benefi cial not only to the crèche but for the whole community”.
“I’m very thankful to LEDET for this initiative because they had the foresight to see that everyone and especially the children need a park environment with shade and decided to come plant all these trees” said Ephraim Kgatle, founder and owner of AOGU Day Care Centre. Different types of indigenous and fruit trees were planted. The fruits trees were mango and avocado trees and the indigenous trees were Yellow wood, Mahogany, Celtis Africana, Forest elder and the Karee tree.
LEDET environmental offi cer, Daniel Mathole demonstrated how to plant a tree and then gave other stakeholders , as well as the the day care centre children a chance to plant.“For one to love trees you have to love nature, you need to get dirty when planting a tree and not be afraid of the soil” said Mathole.

New office in Phalaborwa for Transvaal Training
Transvaal Training, a service provider that specializes in the training of lifting machines, mobile plant and equipment (earthmoving and mining) advanced driver training, occupational health and safety and safety skills, opened an offi ce in Phalaborwa last week. Gerhard Posthumus, Managing Director, says that because of the high volume of services needed in the Ba-Phalaborwa area an offi ce here became essential. He says that Transvaal Training has accreditation with all the necessary authorities. It has a long time relationship with the mining industry such as Palabora Copper and LA Crushers in Phalaborwa. He furthermore says that Transvaal Training has full time instructors in Phalaborwa to assist businesses. Pieter Pelser, manager of Limpopo and the new
Phalaborwa branch, says that they specialize in, on site training, to teach trainees with their own equipment and in their own special environment. This can be done anywhere in South Africa and abroad where needed. Training can also be done on a one on one basis and it is not necessary for businesses to try and get groups together. Persons that are not currently employed can also apply to be trained to get a qualifi cation to help them fi nd employment easier. Gerhard Posthumus says that Transvaal Training was founded on July 5 1994, and has grown into a business with branches all over South Africa as well as in Mozambique, Zambia, Congo and Tanzania. He says Transvaal Training can also assist businesses to claim a refund of the monies, that was spent on the training of
employees, from the Skills Development Fund. This means that business owners can actually get their employees trained free of charge. There
is a great need for training in the agricultural industry and they are now rendering a specialized service for this market as well, said Posthumus. For more information and to arrange an appointment, contact Sonja Landsberg at the Phalaborwa offi ce on 074 433 7986.

Another weekend of premier and super matchesThe loyal fanatics of the exciting, fantastic
and fabulous Kaizer Letsoalo Games (KLG) Soccer League are in for yet another weekend of thrilling action in both the super and premier divisions of the league.
A key amongst these encounters will be the top-of-the-table premier division clash involving Manamela Naughty Boys and Leswika Classic at the Manamela ground on Saturday. A victory for the hosts will see them stretching the gap in the race towards the coveted title. Other signifi cant encounters in the Premier division include the potentially explosive confrontation between Golden Aces and Ramalema Cosmos at the Nyekhetlha grounds the following day, while Lephepane Rovers have a date with MM Super Stars in
a Lephepane derby at the Soccer City sports facility.
The main curiosity in the Super division of this fantastic league will be the battle between Moime Liverpool and fellow title contenders, Rita All Stars to be witnessed at the Sekaba ground on Saturday. Ardent fanatics of the KLG Soccer League will also be magnetically pulled to the Mosoroni ground on Saturday where Bancock will host Rakoma in a Tlhabine derby.
Many exciting matches of the KLG Soccer League in both the Premier and Super divisions are expected at the various grounds in different communities in this area.

ground), Bancock v Rakoma (Mosoroni-Bancock), Monatic v Bokgaga Juventus (Tlhabine), Mokomotji Highlanders v GP United (Mokomotji), Moime Celtic v Mamogalefa (Moime).
Sunday: Napscom v Bahlabine (Napscom-Tickeyline), Mmaphala Peter United v Khujwana Classic (Mosoroni-Carling ground), Mahlogwe v Carling (Nyekhetlha), Khujwana Bagdad v Lenyenye Gunners (Khujwana).

Naughty Boys stretch lead in KLG premier leagueManamela Naughty Boys stretched their lead in the tight
log standings of the premier division in the exciting Kaizer Letsoalo Games (KLG) Soccer League last weekend.
The marauding outfi t effected this is reality after crushing their neighbours, MM Super Stars, 2-0 in a highly-charged Khopho derby played at the Super ground on Saturday.
The situation was also catalysed by the fact that their close contestant in the league race, Leswika Classic, was defeated by Golden Aces at the Swika la motheo ground on the same day. The victory by Ramalema Cosmos over Royal Celtic has added some spice to the whole league as Leswika Classic, Golden Aces and Ramalema Cosmos have now placed themselves in good position to challenge the run-away Manamela Naughty Boys.
The title chase in the Super division of this exciting league has become unpredictable as the teams at the summit of the log table always fl atter to deceive. Almost fi ve teams are in a good position to challenge for the league honours. The 1-2 loss by favourites Mmaphala Peter United at the hands of close rivals Moime Liverpool did not really help the situation. However, Rita All Stars,
who have a realistic chance of toppling the log leaders fumbled when they played to a goalless stalemate with the lowly Bancock at the Rita grounds.
The following results were recorded at the various grounds where both the Premier and Super divisions of the fabulous Kaizer Letsoalo Games (KLG) Soccer League were staged.
KLG Premier League results, Saturday: Hotbeans 0-1 Khopho All Stars, Leswika Classic 1-2 Golden Aces, MM Super Stars 0-2 Manamela Naughty Boys.
Sunday: Real Madrid 3-2 Mogoboya Junior Chiefs, Ramalema Cosmos 2-1 Royal Celtic, African Buffaloes 0-3 Bubs.
KLG Super League results; Saturday: Rita All Stars 0-0 Bancock, Rakoma 1-2 Monatic, Bokgaga Juventus 0-2 Mokomotji Highlanders, GP United 2-2 Moime Celtic, Mamogalefa 4-2 Bahlabine.
Sunday: Moime Liverpool 2-1 Mmaphala Peter United, Khujwana Classic 1-0 Mahlogwe, Carling 2-0 Khujwana Bagdad, Lenyenye Gunners 2-2 Napscom.
