Roadroid Accuracy

• University of Auckland– Myles Johnston (2013)

– USING CELL-PHONES TO MONITOR ROAD ROUGHNESS,

– Roadroid has an 81% similarity to Laser data and can represent the roughness felt by a road user to a ‘good’ level.

• The World Bank + University of Pretoria– M Schlotjes, A Visser and C Bennett (2014) – EVALUATION OF A SMARTPHONE ROUGHNESS METER

– ...within the accuracy limits of an IQL-3 device of +/- 20 % of the IRI, the equipment satisfied the need!

– Roadroid has great potential as a low-cost, practical device for measuring road roughness at IQL-3 level.

• Our own research– 75-85% (R2 0,5-0,8) depending on speed, and pavement type.

• OVERALL – ACCURAYCY ACCORDING TO WB IQL level 3

• Email lars.forslof@roadroid.com to get this independent reports…

Different vehicles – and phones are different

So its possibile to calibrate…• Run system on a ”known” section defined by IQL 1 or 2.

• Run Roadroid in a certain speed (car and phone)

• View result in app survey monitor - Adjust sensitivity

International Roughness Indexhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Roughness_Index

• Objective and global road measure

• World Bank 4 Information Quality Levels:

– IQL1 - Precision profiles, down to 20 m

– IQL2 - Other (older) profilometric methods

– IQL3 - IRI by correlation/vibration response

(as Roadroid), down to 100 m.

As other methods depends on setup and use!

– IQL4 - Subjective rating (pen+paper)

App for traffic counting

• The Traffic count app registers visual input of traffic flow. The app aim to replace pen and

paper for temporary issues where automatic sensors can’t be used.

• The app should be easier to use in the field than pen and paper, and the data presentation is

done instantly with no interpretation of hand notes.

• Typical user cases are those who need to verify and calibrate automatic traffic sensors, for

temporary checks or for low volume roads.

Simply gather data of your LVR:s!!!

Main benefits

1. Easy to operate1. Also an accuracy parameter!

2. Easy to use

3. Spare parts (nothing rare or expensive)

4. Knowledge (no experts needed to setup)

2. Portable and durable1. Easy to bring anywhere (and bring back)

2. Dont draws attention to it (damage/theft)

3. Durable (do not break often, easy to replace)

3. Overall economy

Pricing structure

Prices depends on:

a) amount of installations (phones) and

b) binding-time, the time you commit to use the system.

There is a license cost per month and unit. Minimum is 1 unit - 1 year. The

more units you have and the longer time you bind them – the price per unit and

month gets lower.

Prices

• Roughnes Data Collection Unit (RDCU) range from 200 USD/month/unit

inclusive the Road Data Management System (RDMS).

• Road Inventory Units (RIU) from to 100 USD/month

• Traffic count app - 50 USD/Month

Invoicing is done yearly in advance paid to BIC and IBAN numbers.
