River Rafting Management Plan

Activity Briefing, Soft Skills and Pre- Trip Procedures

Trip LeaderThe rafting team must have a meeting with the Trip Leader for a complete run down

on what is to be done for the activity

Pre- Rafting: General Plan of Action

Briefing Details

• The briefing is to be conducted by the Session Head.

• Wish the guests and introduce yourself on behalf of the company/ organization.

• Introduce the team and have something positive/ humorous to say about each of the team members.

• Give a brief history of the activity. For instance, “… in the initial days rafts were made using logs or planks that were tied together. When huge logs were tied together, it formed huge rafts that could carry heavy objects. These rafts were used to transport construction materials, agricultural items, cattle and other animals, and even human beings…”

Introduce the equipment.

- Raft - Safety Rope

- Paddle - Wetsuit

-Life Jacket

- Helmet

Give a demonstration pointing out the following.

• Wearing the life jacket and helmet properly

•Sitting position.

•Paddle strokes.

• Synchrony in strokes.

Emergency procedures

• Explain in detail the following procedures.

What to do in case of a flip.

How to use the safety rope.

How to lock paddles for pulling someone out of water.

Liability Waiver/ Medical Concerns

• After the briefing, introduce the liability waiver form, detailing how to fill it and what the declaration means and implies.

• Explicitly ask for even the smallest medical concern the guest might have, explaining the repercussions of hiding any information.

Safety Aspect: Ensure the following

• The guests are in proper rafting gear (no socks, retainers for spectacles etc.).

•The life jacket is properly worn- it should not be loose.

• The helmet is worn properly- it shouldn’t be too tight or loose (two fingers’ gap).

• No alcohol is consumed prior to the activity.

• Make sure the guest has understood the instructions properly.
