Risk Assessments and School Sport

Formal risk assessments must be untaken for out of the ordinary school activities ie excursions, weekly school sport where students leave the school, representative school sport activities.

Risk assessments are not new. What is new is the

formalisation of such assessments. Risk assessments are to formalise DET and teachers’ -

“Duty of Care”

Risk Assessments and School Sport

Duty of Care - means to take reasonable care to avoid foreseeable risks.

All teachers need to be aware of the “Guidelines for the Safe Conduct of Sport and Physical Activity in Schools” which exist to inform staff and community members of standards and requirements for a wide range of activities and excursions. These guidelines are on the DET sport website (www.sports.det.nsw.edu.au).
