A Project for CAD 224, Revit 1

By

William Handley

This is a project for a small 3,000 square foot office building designed to be distinctive and to reflect the forward thinking philosophy off its startup company owner. The distinction is to be reflected in the building’s physical form and operational efficiency.

The physical form is unique in its contrast of three closed sides and one side a complete glass curtain wall face. Another contrast is the angular entry feature of perforated interpenetrating planes. The interior spaces are fairly standard, with interest created by rotating the interior bulding grid 5 degrees. This rotation adds an element of the unexpected and provides “pochee space” shapes in the plan. A major element is a circulation spine on both floors, which his reflected on the exterior by glazing and fin walls which dissolve into columns in the landscape. Because this is a small tight building, a well is provided between floors. The well is covered with a large skylight which adds spatial interest and daylighting. Glass partitions are used in many locations to open up the building to vision and light. With advancing technology it may be possible to control the degree of transparency of these glass walls electronically.

The operational efficiency of the bulding resides in its layout of servant-served spaces on each floor, its use of E.I.F.S. coating and batt insulation for temperature control, control of natural lightr and heat by use of external shading louvers on the curtain wall, and possible use of geothermal mechanical systems.

The site features parking convenient to the building, provision of handicap parking and curb cuts, parking area lighting, bollard lighting for pedestrian areas, a generous trash enclosure (which could be organized for recycling), landscape plant elements to add visual interest and screen undeireableviews, and the spine-extending freestanding columns.
