“Excuse me, Pastor John, but I have a question!”

Purpose of the book of Revelation

Revelation was written to give Christians, struggling in this world against those who

oppose the Faith, hope that the Christ who died for us will also one day return for us as a conquering King to establish

his eternal reign! Because Jesus overcomes, so can we!

Chp. 1 Chp. 2-3 Chps. 4-22

A Guiding Principle

Don’t miss the forest for the trees! Let’s not get lost in the details and therefore miss the message Jesus has for us!

At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a

throne stood in heaven, with one seated

on the throne.

Revelation 5:1-2

Then I saw in the right hand of him who

was seated on the throne a scroll written

within and on the back, sealed with seven

seals.And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming

with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open

the scroll and break its seals?”

Revelation 5:3-4

And no one in heaven or on earth or

under the earth was able to open the scroll

or to look into it, and I began to weep

loudly because no one was found worthy

to open the scroll or to look into it.

One intriguing

possibility is that the

scroll is the title deed

to planet earth …

The Lamb with a scroll in

Psalm 24:1

The earth is the Lord's and the fullness

thereof, the world and those who dwell

therein.

The Lamb with a scroll in

Title deed to

the earth?

I believe what we see happening as

the seals are opened gives insight

into the nature of the scroll.

The Lamb with a scroll in

the Throne Room

“The idea here is that God has a book in

which the history of the universe is already

written. He has written the history of the

world in advance, He holds in His hand the

history of the world in advance, and

He initiates the consummation of all

history. Only God can hold this scroll.” (David Guzik)

If the scroll were not opened, then . . .

6:10, The martyrs of the faith would not be

avenged.

8:4-5, The prayers of the saints (“Your

kingdom come; Your will be done.”) would

not be answered.

The Lamb with a scroll in

the Throne Room

If the scroll were not opened, then . . .

9:15, God’s appointed plan would not

come to pass.

11:15, The kingdom of the world would

not become the kingdom of our Lord

and of his Christ.

The Lamb with a scroll in

the Throne Room

If the scroll were not opened, then . . .

Chapters 16-18, The wicked would not

be judged.

Chapters 19-20, Jesus would not come

back.

The Lamb with a scroll in

the Throne Room

If the scroll were not opened, then . . .

Chapters 21-22, God would not reign in

glory in the new heavens and the new

earth.

The Lamb with a scroll in

the Throne Room

If the scroll isn’t opened, the Bible’s

promises will not come true and all

hope will be gone FOREVER!

The bottom line:

The scroll contains

God’s will and plan for

human history!

Revelation 5:5

And one of the elders said to me, “Weep

no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe

of Judah, the Root of David, has

conquered, so that he can open the scroll

and its seven seals.”

The Lamb with a scroll in

the Throne Room

Genesis 49:9, 10

Judah is a lion's cub. . .he crouched as a

lion … The scepter shall not depart

from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from

between his feet.

Isaiah 11:1-2a

There shall come forth a shoot from the

stump of Jesse, and a branch from his

roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit

of the Lord shall rest upon him.

Revelation 5:6

And between the throne and the four

living creatures and among the elders I

saw a Lamb standing, as though it had

been slain, with seven horns and

with seven eyes, which are the seven

spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

John 1:29

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward

him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God,

who takes away the sin of the world!”

1 Corinthians 5:7

For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been

sacrificed.

Revelation 5:6

living creatures and among the elders I

saw a Lamb standing, as though it had

John 16:7

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to

your advantage that I go away, for if I do

not go away, the Helper will not come

to you. But if I go, I will send him to

you.

The Lamb with a scroll in

Revelation 5:7

And he went and took the scroll from

the right hand of him who was seated on

the throne.

The Lamb with a scroll in

“Dead, buried, raised, now the Lamb

assertively takes the reins of history. That’s

what this symbolizes. Jesus takes the scroll

that describes the events of the end,

whereby all the wrongs will be set right,

all injustices accounted for, all crimes

avenged.”

The Lamb with a scroll in

the Throne Room

“He takes it from the right hand of the

Father, and the Father doesn’t resist him,

the four living creatures don’t object, and

the twenty-four elders do not stand in his

way. This symbolic action shows that

Jesus has taken control of history.” (James M. Hamilton Jr.)

Psalm 2:1-3

Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot

in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves,

and the rulers take counsel together, against

the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,

“Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away

their cords from us.”

The Lamb with a scroll in

the Throne Room

Psalm 2:4-6

He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord

holds them in derision. Then he will speak

to them in his wrath and terrify them in his

fury, saying, “As for me, I have set my King

on Zion, my holy hill.”

The Lamb with a scroll in

What is the response in

heaven to the actions of

the Lamb?

Revelation 5:7-14

The Lamb with a scroll in

Revelation 5:12

“Worthy is the Lamb who

was slain, to receive power

and wealth and wisdom

and might and honor and

glory and blessing!”

The Lamb with a scroll in

the Throne Room

Revelation 5:13-14

And I heard every creature in heaven and

on earth and under the earth and in the sea,

and all that is in them, saying,

The Lamb with a scroll in

the Throne Room

Revelation 5:12-14

“To him who sits on the throne and to

the Lamb be blessing and honor and

glory and might forever and ever!”

And the four living creatures said, “Amen!”

and the elders fell down and worshiped.

Is the church in heaven at

this point? Has the rapture

of the church occurred? Will

the church be spared from

going through the period of

judgment and tribulation

that God is about to unleash

upon the world beginning in

Revelation 6?

This world would be a terrible place

if there were no Jesus. But there

is! And He is great, He is good,

and He is totally trustWORTHY!

And HE has taken control of

history!
