Lenten Regulations
Every Catholic, to enter more deeply into the life of Christ, is to participate in some way in the spiritual and penitential disciplines of Lent. The regulations for the Catholic Church in the United States are as follows: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and absti-nence. The other Fridays of Lent are days of absti-nence from meat. The obligation to abstain from meat binds Catholics 14 years of age and older. The obligation to fast, lim-iting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals dur-ing the day, binds Catholics from the age of 18 to 59. Those younger or older are encouraged to voluntarily embrace these disciplines in so far as they are able. Divine and Natural Law holds that all the faithful are morally bound to do penance. The Fourth Precept of the Church obliges Catholics to observe the penance of fasting and abstinence for Lent. Fridays outside of Lent are also days of penance and spiritual discipline. Abstaining from meat is the tradi-tional way of observing these days of penance. The Bishops of the United States have granted permission for abstinence from meat on Fridays outside of Lent to be replaced with some other self-denial or personal penance. However, Friday remains a day of some peni-tential practice. As Bishop Provost stated in a recent pastoral letter: “The idea of sacrificing something is countercultural to the “throwaway” mentality that plagues us today and of which Pope Francis has time and again warned us” (September 3, 2015). Fasting and abstinence should never endanger one’s health. Avoid-ing some form of permissible entertainment or per-forming sacrificial acts of charity, for example, could replace the fasting and abstinence when health is a consideration. Finally, with any penitential discipline, both the letter and the spirit are to be maintained. For example, replacing meat with a gourmet seafood meal is not in keeping with penitential practice. Also, the increasingly popular practice of hosting “crawfish boils” and entertainments on Good Friday is highly inappro-priate. Good Friday remains an extraordinary and sol-emn day on which we recall the suffering and death of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Good Friday should remain a day of fasting, abstinence, prayer, penance, and interi-or and exterior quiet.

A silent retreat is a time when you can open yourself to Jesus and let Him enter into the deep recesses of your heart where He will listen to you and most of all HE WILL SPEAK TO YOU. It’s also a time to just relax in a rocking chair in the beautiful landscaped courtyard and water fountain. This is enhanced with daily mass, confession, Way of the Cross Ro-sary, private adoration, private room, private bath and good food. This is a good time to turn off ones GPS, step away from this fast moving world for three days and ask GOD for directions. For reservations & information call: A.J. Fr. Thomas Mathew Vellappallil, MS. I was born in Anickad, Kerala, India. I am the fourth and the middle child among nine children, three girls and six boys. I still can’t convince my brothers that the middle child is the smartest, the best… During my school days I was simply attracted to priestly life which gradually be-came a strong conviction and later led me to embrace the gift of priesthood. Looking back to my childhood days, I can undoubtedly say that prayer which was the center-piece of growing up in my family, contributed to my voca-tion to the priesthood. You could never be excused from the family prayer which lasted more than an hour every evening. It was literally true for that the “family that prayed together stayed together” even to this day. After graduating Philosophy from St. Joseph’s Pontifical College in India, I was drawn to the charism of La Salette through the inspiration given by my Spiritual Director. This paved the way for me to spend a year in Postulancy and another year in the Novitiate, and I continued to study Theology in the Philippines. Then I pursued a Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling. I was ordained to the priesthood on February 22, 1994 at the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette in the Philippines on the feast of the Chair of Peter. During my first year of priest-hood, I served as Parochial Vicar of the Holy Rosary Par-ish as well as chaplain of the La Salette High School in Jones, Isabela, Philippines. I was also the priest-in-charge of a remote, but adjacent parish of San Augustine. For the next three years I was appointed Director of the La Salette Postulancy, in charge of the formation of semi-narians from various countries. Upon arrival in the United States in 1998, I was sent to study for a year in Washington, D.C., and then served as Parochial Vicar in various parishes in Texas and Florida. After serving at Mary Queen Parish, in Friendswood in the Arch-Diocese of Galveston-Houston, I was assigned at St. Theresa Church in Sulphur, Louisiana as Pastor. Currently, I am serving at the North American La Salette Mission Center as its Director. Although parish ministry is close to my heart, I thoroughly enjoy my current ministry at the Mission Center located in St. Louis, MO. I am grateful and proud to be a La Salette missionary.
