René Lalique, an exceptional jeweler and a great master of French glass, was one of the most famous designers of Art Nouveau  and Art Deco period. For the last 90 years Lalique creations have been manufactured at Wingen-sur-Moder in Alsace, France, (where Lalique Museum was opened  on the 1st. July, 2011). When Lalique was 16 years old, he became apprenticed to the jeweler Louis Aucoc. While working for Aucoc, Lalique also studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris which established him as a jeweler designer for great establishments such as Cartier, Hamelin and Boucheron. Towards the end of 1880, he started his own business and manufactured under his own name. He worked with gold and gems as well as unconventional materials such as enamel, horn and glass. He created brooches in the form of thistles, currants, poppies, scarabs, bugs and butterflies. He often mixed flora and fauna and created women's figurative bodies in the shapes of Water Nymphs or Winged Figures, like the pendant 'Femme Libelulle - Dragon Fly Woman, one of the masterpieces in his collection.
