Removing an Indwelling Catheter

Check physician’s orders & hospital policy
Obtain/check supplies for procedure

Wash hands

Enter room, introduce self appropriately (name, what going to do)

Identify patient using two forms of I.D.
explain purpose and procedure

Ensure privacy.

Don clean gloves.

Prepare client by proper draping.

Connect syringe to appropriate catheter port and withdraw all fluid from balloon.

Instruct client to take a deep breath, pinch tubing and gently remove catheter.

Allow urine to drain from tubing into collection bag.

Provide perineal care if needed
Assist client to a comfortable position.

Measure urine output Dispose of urine,
catheter and equipment

Remove gloves and perform hand hygiene.

Document assessment, procedure, and client response.
Record urine volume with I & O data.
