Reminder: Blackboard Down (for update) August 20-22

The online classroom will not be available Monday, August 20th – Wednesday, August 22nd as the Center for Learning Innovation will be updating Blackboard to Service Pack 9. For information about Service Pack 9, watch this YouTube video or click HERE for a webpage that illustrates the minor updates involved in this transition.

Hint: If you need to demo Blackboard for your class or group during this time, you can show this Student Orientation video or use the CourseSites website.

Reminder: 10 week summer grades are to be in Bruin by 8/21/2012 at 5:00pm; these grades must be pulled from Blackboard BEFORE the scheduled upgrade!

Reading Corner: Are you ready for Fall Term? Start the “year” off right! Even though it was written with K-12 Educators in mind, this article published by the National Education Association has some excellent tips that can apply to postsecondary educators as well. Excerpts from “33 Ways to Start the First Year Off Right: A Little Planning Pays Big Dividends,” from the Virginia Education Association

Tip 3: Give your classroom some class. Decorate your classroom in a manner that will catch the eyes of your students and give them something to think about at the same time. BU Hint: Even if your classroom is strictly online, think about what students will see, think, and do when they first “walk in.” What kind of first impression does your “classroom” give? Tip 5: Establish the rules. If you want discipline to work during the year, start off by establishing class rules (no more than five) right at the beginning. Let the students help develop and establish the rules. They will be more likely to follow them. The rules should be posted in the classroom. BU Hint: College courses have “rules” too! Make sure your policies for late work and attendance, for example, are easily accessible to your students.

Library Announcements

The library would like to inform you of a new policy regarding our audio visual collection. For students, we have always had a one week, no renewal policy for all audio visual materials. As of August 27, we will be allowing one renewal on these items. Of course, as faculty you will still be able to keep materials as long as you need them, so this change will not directly affect you. However, if you know that you will be using a particular video for an upcoming class, it would be a good idea to let us know at least two weeks in advance. This will allow time for the item to be returned or recalled, if need be. You can call the circulation desk, 557-7314, or email library@bellevue.edu, and we will set your videos aside for you or place a hold if checked out. We would also like to remind you that there are many fine educational films in library databases, such as Films on Demand, Vast Streaming Videos, and NBC Learn Higher Ed. These are always available for use and can be viewed in their entirety or by individual segments. If you have any questions about these streaming videos or the new policy for the physical items, please contact the reference desk, 557-7313.
