INTRODUCTION

Vital statistics is defined as that branch of biometry which deals with data and the law of human mortality, morbidity and demography.

Vital events are collection, compiled and the resulting statistics are known as vital statistics.

Vital events is a part of Vital Statistics.

In India, vital Statistics are collected under the births, deaths,

marriages, ‘Registration Act of 1886’ and ‘state Act’.

Vital events deals with births, deaths, marriages, divorce, migrations.

BIRTHS

The process for registering a child’s birth differs from state to state. This is a process that most private hospitals can advise on. They will issue the parents with proof of the birth, which has to be taken to the local government offices for it to be registered.

The registration of births comes under the Act ‘1996’.

DEATHS The process for registering death has taken place

in Government hospitals/private hospitals/nursing homes/ medical institutions, such deaths are to be reported by the head of the institutions within 21 days of deaths to the concerned Registrars. 

The registration of deaths comes under the Act ‘1996’.

MIGRATIONS The movement of people from one place in the world to another for

the purpose of taking up permanent or semi permanent residence, usually across a political boundary.

Types of Migration Internal Migration: Moving to a new home within a state,

country, or continent.

External Migration: Moving to a new home in a different state, country, or continent.

Emigration: Leaving one country to move to another (e.g., the

Pilgrims emigrated from England). Immigration: Moving into a new country (e.g., the Pilgrims

immigrated to America).

MARRIAGES

A marriage which has already been solemnised can be registered either under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 or under the Special Marriage Act, 1954.

DIVORCES

A divorce is a legal action between married people to terminate their marriage relationship. It can be referred to as dissolution of marriage and is basically, the legal action that ends the marriage before the death of either spouse.

The registration of divorce in INDIA differ, for Hindu Act ‘1955’ and otherwise for other persons Act ‘1954’.

METHOD OF COLLECTION OF REGISTRATION OF VITAL EVENTS

USES OF VITAL EVENTS Analysis of demographic trends- vital statistics reflect

on the changing pattern of the population pertaining to the intercensual years.

Legal value- The records regarding births, marriages, deaths, etc., are legal documents. They help to protect their rights in property, insurance.

Help in planning of health services- On the basis of vital statistics, governments decide about family planning, number of maternity homes and hospitals.
